    Notes: One of the most wasteful inefficiencies of the nationalised industries is that, isolated from price signals in the market, they make mistaken investment decisions. State-run higher education is no different. Excessive investment, following the Robbins Report of 1963, has resulted in over-staffing, but university ‘managers’– vice-chancellors, heads of department, etc. – have no incentive to maximise efficiency by firing less desirable members of staff. It is the better qualified lecturers who are leaving, bribed with severance payments, to take up jobs in the private sector.

    Notes: Investigations of post-harvest spoilage of dry beans have been inconclusive about the moisture level at which loss of quality will occur. This study evaluated and compared different moisture equilibration and moisture determination methods used with dry beans in previous investigations. Our results indicated that significant variation among individual dry beans existed for all methods of moisture equilibration especially with direct addition of water. No significant differences were found among methods of moisture analysis. Storage of pinto beans with a moisture content of 14.1% (aw= 0.755) or less is recommended for microbial stability. Because of bean to bean variation, a mean and coefficient of variation for moisture content of a representative sample of beans described the condition of the beans better than a mean alone.

    Notes: Commercial chocolate products were analyzed for theobromine and caffeine content by High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Levels in 22 samples of chocolate liquor averaged 1.22% theobromine and 0.21% caffeine. Commercial cocoas contained, on the average, 1.89% theobromine and 0.21% caffeine. Sweet chocolate averaged 0.46% theobromine and 0.07% caffeine, while milk chocolate averaged 0.15% theobromine and 0.02% caffeine. Hot cocoa (chocolate) beverages averaged 65 mg of theobromine and 4 mg of caffeine per 5 ounce serving and chocolate milk prepared from a variety of cocoa-sugar mixes averaged 58 mg of theobromine and 5 mg of caffeine per 8 ounce serving. Theobromine and caffeine levels varied widely in individual samples within the product categories examined. Also, the ratio of theobromine to caffeine varied widely among different chocolate liquors ranging from a low of 2.5:1 to a high of 23.0:1.

    Notes: Qualitative social research generates large amounts of non-standard data which make analysis problematic. This discussion advocates the use of grounded theory as a way of handling these problems. The approach is illustrated, in the context of organizational research, by three cases of grounded theoretical analyses: (a) a study of face-to-face interaction in a hospital between nurses and patients’ relatives; (b) a field-study based on the complex organizational interrelationships associated with small batch production manufacturing; and (c) a documentary-based analysis of the organizational pre-conditions of large-scale accidents. The discussion of the cases stresses the manner in which the qualitative data collected were manipulated in order to give them theoretical shape.

    Notes: : A method is described for obtaining surface slope information for analysis with other land resource and water quality data in hydrologic models of nonpoint sources of water pollution. The method described requires a point sampling scheme, topographic maps, and a coordinate digitizer. Sample point elevation, slope direction, and slope magnitude are calculated from locations of the sample point and the nearest upper and lower contour lines. Details of the data collection methodology and associated problems are discussed.

    Notes: : A dynamic programming model is presented for planning the optimal capacity expansion sequence of waste water treatment plants servicing sewerage systems with infiltration/inflow. The model employs a nonlinear deterministic demand function for waste water treatment plant capacity. Model output provides the optimal timing, size, and sequence for treatment plant capacity expansion projects and infiltration/inflow removal projects. An example problem is presented and solved.
