Notes: SYNOPSIS. Breeding anomalies in an inbred strain (B1) of syngen 1, Tetrahymena pyriformis, are traced to aberrant chromosomal constitutions of the micronuclei. The origins of the micronuclear defects have not been established, but they probably arise in much the same manner as those observed earlier in “semi-amicronucleate” clones, except that they occur later and in lower frequencies. The abnormal nuclei are impaired in their ability to carry out the maneuvers required for normal conjugation; some are blocked in MI, most after MII; the occasional cells in which nuclear reorganization is completed have visibly defective macronuclear anlagen and are inviable. When crossed to normal strains, nuclear misbehavior is induced in them and again very few if any viable exconjugants are produced. The details of the aberrations are discussed with reference to the patterns of nucleocytoplasmic interaction in conjugation.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. The effect of H. gallinacea infection on the phagocytic activity of the reticulo-endothelial system in chicks has been investigated. Changes occurring in the pattern of R.E. activity show that there is initial stimulation of phagocytosis within 24 hr and that this increases up to the 4th and 5th days after which time parasites appear in the blood. Thereafter there is a rapid drop in R.E. activity with a proportional increase in parasitaemia following which death ensues. The importance of the protective value of the reticulo-endothelial system is indicated and it is suggested that a toxin produced by the parasites or by their break-down products is the likely cause of phagocytic depression.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Cells of variety 1, Tetrahymena pyriformis, manifest different immobilization antigens when grown at 15d̀ and 25d̀C. These differences are partially maintained for a period of growth at an intermediate temperature. Crosses were performed at intermediate temperatures between parental cultures conditioned to high and low temperatures and the antigenic characteristics of their progeny were determined. When conjugation is abortive and paired cells do not complete conjugation, the cells separate and produce clones with distinctive serotypes. When conjugation is completed, however, no systematic differences between exconjugants can be demonstrated. These results differ from those obtained under comparable circumstances in Paramecium aurelia, and fail to support the idea that the cytoplasm plays a significant role in the maintenance of serotypes in Tetrahymena.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. The effect of P. vinckei infections on the phagocytic activity of the reticulo-endothelial system in mice has been investigated. Changes occurring in the pattern of R.E. activity show that there is slight stimulation of phagocytosis 24 hours after the initiation of the infection at which time parasites appear in the blood. The stimulation continues and reaches a peak on the 3rd day, following which it drops to subnormal levels by the 6th and 7th days when the animals die. The parasitaemia rises abruptly from the 4th day onwards, this increase bearing a direct relationship to the fall in the level of phagocytic activity. The changes which occur during this infection are compared with those previously reported for Plasmodium gallinaceum in chicks.

Notes: : Bluegills were exposed for one hour to 0.2 or 2.3 mg/liter water soluble fraction (WSF) of JP-4 in a testing chamber designed to contain individual fish. A strain gage paddle was used to monitor activity. Whole body movement of individual fish did not change appreciably during exposure to either 0.2 or 2.3 mg/liter WSF-JP-4. Strength of pectoral fin movement, accounting for the majority of the fish behavior, increased in six of ten individuals exposed to 2.3 mg/liter WSF-JP-4. Pectoral fanning may be a useful parameter to indirectly assess water quality.

Notes: Beef carcasses of similar grade characteristics provided 15 pairs each of strip loins, top sirloin butts and tenderloins. Subprimals were prepared according to Institutional Meat Purchase Specifications (IMPS) for boneless cuts, vacuum packaged, stored for 13 days at -1°C and then trimmed to steak-ready form. Trimmed subprimal cuts were assigned to one of three treatment groups: (I) fresh (not frozen), hand-cut; (II) crust-frozen (2.33 hr at -34°C, 0.75 hr at -1°C), pressed-cleaved; and (III) frozen (8hr at -34°C), tempered (24 hr at -l°C), pressed-cleaved. Percentage yield of salable cuts from pressed-cleaved subprimals (Treatments II and III) was significantly higher than that for hand-cut subprimals (Treatment I). Few differences in thawing-cooking characteristics were observed among steaks from the three treatments. Treatment had no (P 〉 0.05) effect on sensory panel ratings for longissimus, biceps femoris or psoas major muscles but gluteus medius muscles from Treatment III were less tender (P 〈 0.05) than those from Treatment 11 and more tender (P 〈 0.05) than those from Treatment I. There were no differences (P 〉 0.05) in shear force values in 20 of 21 comparisons. Beef loin subprimals can be hand-cut or pressed-cleaved in fresh, crust-frozen, or frozen-tempered form with little or no differences in cooking or palatability traits among steaks.

Notes: SUMMARY. Surveys of the Wye catchment in March and September 1975, and July and September 1976 and 1977, yielded 227 macro-invertebrate taxa, 77 of which were Chironomidae. Total macro-invertebrate density ranged from 520 to 22020 m−2. Total density estimates in July 1976. during a period of severe drought, were significantly higher than in July 1977 but no differences were established between estimates on other comparable dates in 1975, 1976 and 1977. The total number of taxa and total macro-invertebrates collected from sites with total dissolved solids concentrations less than 50 mg I−1 were significantly lower than at sites with higher concentrations. In general, upstream sites were dominated numerically by Plecoptera in March; Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Diptera were relatively more abundant during the summer months. Sites lower in the catchment were more variable in composition with Oligochaeta, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Diptera all abundant at certain sites and times. The densities of Ecdyonuridae (Ephemeroptera). Hydropsychidae (Trichoptera) and Elminthidae (Coleoptera) in the impounded R. Elan, a tributary of the R. Wye, were significantly lower than at nearby sites on the Wye although no differences in total macro-invertebrate density were established. Average linkage clustering of Spearman rank correlation coefficients between selected taxa allowed the comparison of taxa groups with contemporary site groups by nodal analysis. Six major taxa groups were established and these characterized five site groupings.
