    Notes: Abstract Archived data, together with field observations collected between 1980 and 1982 off the west coast of Korea, suggest that the onset of winter monsoon winds in late fall initiates a residual southward flow that potentially carries large volumes of resuspended bottom sediments into the Korea Strait. During the calm conditions of summer, muds are replenished by high river discharges and reform the band of soft material, which characteristically occurs as a series of mudflats near the coast. Thus, these mudflats serve as a temporary storage facility during summer accumulation and as a source during winter erosion.

    Notes: The mesogloea and skin of a common edible jellyfish, Stomolophus nomurai, were characterized with respect to amino acid composition and compared with a commercially salted jellyfish. Then the mesogloea was digested with pepsin at 3°C for 48 hr and its solubilized protein was isolated and subjected to biochemical analyses. These composite results have shown that the major edible component of jellyfish was the connective tissue protein, collagen, characterized by its high content of hydroxylysine and its glycosides.

    Notes: A near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectrophotometric procedure was evaluated for potential use in assaying nutrient contents of vegetables. Dried ground samples of cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, asparagus, peas, green beans, and squash were analyzed chemically for crude protein, crude fat, ash, and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and then scanned to develop NIR prediction equations. For the 75 calibration foods samples, the respective correlation coefficients between actual and NIR predicted values of these food components were 0.97, 0.77, 0.91, 0.81. Predictions for 26 unknown samples, which included cabbage, carrots, chard, corn, onions and rhubarb, were based on NIR equations developed from the first 75 samples. The resultant correlations were 0.95, 0.49, 0.85, and 0.78, respectively, for crude protein, crude fat, ash and NDF. NIR prediction detected incorrect chemical values of crude protein in several samples.

    Notes: Proteins have been immobilized in porous support particles held in a fixed-bed reactor through which protein solution is continuously circulated. Changing the recirculation flow rate alters the observed immobilization kinetics and the maximum enzyme loading which can be achieved for glucose oxidase and glucoamylase on carbodiimide-treated activated carbon and for glucoamylase immobilized on CNBr-Sepharose 4B. Direct microscopic examination of FITC-labelled protein in sectioned Sepharose particles and indirect activity-loading studies with activated carbon-enzyme conjugates all indicate that immobilized enzyme is increasingly localized near the outer surface of the support particles at larger recirculation flow rates. Restricted diffusion of enzymes may be implicated in this phenomenon. These contacting effects may be significant considerations in the scaleup of processes for protein impregnation in porous supports, since apparent activity and stability of the final preparation depend on internal protein distribution.

    Notes: Abstract The fatigue crack growth (FCG) behaviour of SiC and B4C/B reinforced Ti-6 Al-4 V metal matrix composites loaded in the transverse direction as a function of modifications of the interface between the fibre and matrix was studied. The interface chemistry, modified by sulphur diffusion during thermal cycling treatment, changed the FCG in air, dry nitrogen and hydrogen environments when compared with the as-received specimens. The FCG rates tend to be higher in a humid environment. The SEM fractrography indicates that the FCG in humid air was by an increased amount of fibre splitting. The FCG in dry nitrogen environment was more often by interface debonding with some fibre splitting and fiber fracture. The FCG rates in dry hydrogen for both as-received and heat-treated specimens were intermediate between the observed rates for dry nitrogen and humid air. During FCG in laboratory air, the sulphur-enriched interface of the specimens thermal cycled in a sulphur environment reacts with the humidity in air to degrade the interface cohesion, resulting in complete separation of the interface from the matrix and the fibre at low strains. This inability of the interface to sustain any strain further increases the FCG rates in the matrix. The results show that the interface does transfer load during fatigue cycling either in an inert environment or if the interface has a minimal amount of impurities.

    Notes: Abstract In measuring the fluid forces acting on an accelerating cylinder, it is important to remove the force required to accelerate the cylinder mass from the total force sensed by the force transducer. A low-cost data-acquisition system which electronically subtracts the cylinder inertia force from the total force is described along with appropriate-filter circuits. An experimental procedure for obtaining the correct subtraction condition is outlined. The results indicate that less than two percent of the inertia force remain in the fluid-force signal and all significant spurious high-frequency noise has been eliminated by the filter circuits. These concepts and circuits can be applied to many different measurement environments.
