    Notes: A study has been made on the effect of thiols and disulfides on lowering the molecular weight of polysulfide polymers. It was shown that in the presence of aqueous sodium disulfide there is an interchange of chain segments. This effect is observable if a simple organic disulfide is present in the system, resulting in a lower molecular weight. Co-polymers can be prepared by heating together in the presence of sodium disulfide, aqueous dispersions of two different polysulfide polymers. When thiols are present in the system, interchange of disulfide groups occurs in the absence of sodium disulfide. The results show that disulfide/disulfide redistribution and thiol/disulfide interchange take place in polysulfide polymers. The occurrence of these same reactions has recently been recognized by workers in the biochemical field. A literature survey of thiol/disulfide reactions showed that results formerly attributed to oxidation/reduction reactions could be also explained by an interchange mechanism.

    Notes: A streak photographic technique was used to determine the velocity distribution in a capillary produced by the flow of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). This uniquely designed quartz die assembly, which was fitted onto a melt extruder, permitted visualization of polymer flow behavior during melt spinning. Aluminum tracer particles were mixed with polymer chips prior to extrusion. A laser beam was directed through a lens system that illuminated the tracer particles in the melt only in a thin, vertical cross section of the transparent quartz die. A pressure-drop analysis was also performed on PET, under the same experimental conditions, to determine rheological properties of the polymer. By using these rheological properties theoretical velocity distributions were calculated for PET and then compared with the profiles obtained by the streak photographic technique.

    Notes: The photoinitiated copolymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone onto woolen substrates from aqueous solutions has been studied. A novel water-soluble photosensitizer, 4-(sulpomethyl) benzil sodium salt (Quantacure SKS - patent pending), has been developed and its efficiency assessed with and without an amine synergist. The initiator is nonmutagenic within the terms of the Ames testing procedure. Induction periods were not observed. The action of the so-called synergist, dimethylaminoethanol, was to reduce or stop the grafting reaction. The significance of the pH of the aqueous medium is shown by a maximum in grafting being observed at pH = 4.0 for otherwise standard conditions. Aspects of impregnation procedure were examined, marked improvements in the grafting level being achieved by use of preliminary evacuation - freeze/thaw cycles.

    Notes: The radiation crosslinking of poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, with trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate, TMPTMA, has been examined. The polyfunctional TMPTMA undergoes rapid polymerization incorporating the PVC into a three-dimensional network. The kinetics and mechanism of these crosslinking reactions were studied with particular reference to dose dependence and thermal treatment. The gel was rapidly formed with a TMPTMA polymerization rate greater than that of the PVC grafting reaction. Only 30-40% of the available bonds were used in the initial polymerization. The remaining 60-70% of the double bonds predominantly react in the final stages of crosslinking (80-100% gelation). The macroscopic properties (e.g., solubility, glass transition temperatures, mechanical characteristics, etc.) of the PVC-TMPTMA blend are discussed in terms of the molecular crosslinking mechanism. The effect of thermal treatment, during and after irradiation, on the reaction rates and mechanism is examined.

    Notes: Streak-photographic and stress birefringence techniques were used to analyze the flow of poly(ethylene terephthalate) through potential chain-ordering die geometries. The streak photographs were used to determine velocity distributions and streamlines in various convergent dies. The different contours were seen to have a significant effect on the polymer streamlines and velocity distributions. The measured velocities were used to develop empirical equations, specific for each geometry, which relate velocity to position within the die and to throughput rate. Flow birefringence was used to determine the extent of molecular ordering. The optimum chain-ordering die geometry was determined to be one which included a rapid initial decrease in cross-sectional area. Birefringence was also used to monitor polymer flow instability. An unusual mechanism for instability was observed at intermediate throughput rates.

    Notes: The microwave absorption of aqueous solutions of DNA extracted from E. coli has been studied between 8 and 12 GHz by the use of an optical heterodyne technique. By measuring optically the temperature rise produced in an absorbing sample by pulsed microwave radiation, unambiguous, direct measurement of the microwave absorption is possible. Our results show that E. coli DNA absorbs microwaves in the 8-12-GHz region substantially more efficiently than water, which is itself an extremely efficient absorber. The observed absorption is featureless and decreases slightly with increasing frequency. These observations are consistent with an explanation involving direct absorption by longitudinal acoustic modes of the double helix.
