    Notes: The results of a systematic study of a recently proposed method by Frenkel and Ladd for calculating free energies via molecular dynamics are reported. Internal measures of the error, the effect of varying parameters, and comparison of the relative computational efficiency of the method compared to other methods is considered. In particular, agreement with the quasiharmonic method is shown for temperatures up to 75% of melting.

    Notes: 7Li-NMR spin-lattice relaxation T1 of hydrated zeolite Li–X has been determined at 23.5 MHz between 140 and 295 K for samples with different Fe content. The results show that relaxation by paramagnetic Fe impurities is dominating near the T1 minimum in samples which contain 100 ppm Fe. The whole spectrum of all Li ions is observed by NMR, the free induction decay is nonexponential at 295 K.

    Notes: An order of magnitude improvement in the specific contact resistance of gold-based ohmic contacts to p-type GaInAsP (Eg=1.13 eV) is reported. A novel technique using a silicon susceptor has been employed in a rapid thermal processor. A direct comparison between gold-based contacts annealed in a conventional furnace and the rapid thermal processor indicated a specific contact resistance of 4.2×10−5 and 4.1×10−6 Ω cm2, respectively. Auger electron spectroscopy, in depth profile mode, revealed two different metallurgical profiles for the conventional furnace and the rapid thermal processor. The rapid thermal processor was successfully implemented in a p-i-n optical detector process resulting in a reduction in the device series resistance and improved performance.

    Notes: Cobalt-doped semi-insulating InP layers grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (LPMOCVD) have been used for the first time as a current blocking layer for 1.3 μm InGaAsP buried crescent lasers. Lasers with this cobalt-doped InP blocking layer have cw threshold currents as low as 8 mA at room temperature. This is the lowest cw threshold current yet reported for an InGaAsP laser with a semi-insulating current blocking layer. In addition, the lasers exhibit total differential quantum efficiency of 60%, high-temperature operation up to 100 °C, high output power of 30 mW/facet, and a 3-dB modulation bandwidth of 11.6 GHz. These results indicate that the cobalt-doped semi-insulating InP layer grown by LPMOCVD provides effective current blocking for high-performance lasers.

    Notes: Conventional alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) establishment methods may create considerable potential for erosion. Conservation tillage practices that result in stand establishment without disturbing the soil greatly would be beneficial in reducing soil losses. Thus, field experiments were conducted to evaluate the success of alfalfa establishment without tillage in a perennial grass sod. Variables included rate of carbofuran (2, 3-dihydro-2, 2-dimethyl-7 benzofuranyi methylcarbamate) insecticide and control of existing vegetation with chemicals. Establishment without tillage was compared with a conventional method of establishment. Carbofuran at 1.1 kg ha−1 applied in the row with the seed, when compared with a control, increased yields during the year of planting but no response was observed in the year after seeding. Yields of alfalfa established without tillage using either glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) or paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4, 4-bipyridinium chloride) for sod suppression were equivalent to or better than yields obtained from conventional sowings except for the 2 April sowing. Paraquat was more effective for tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) suppression when applications were made on 26 April after spring tiller emergence was complete than on 2 April when some of the tillers may have been protected from the spray by basal sheath tissue.Broadcast application of paraquat resulted in higher alfalfa yields and decreased non-alfalfa components due to more complete sod suppression than application in bands over the row.

    Notes: We suggest that the maximum in Young's and the biaxial modulus observed for composition-modulated metallic superlattices arises from the same physical causes as the minimum observed in the shear modulus, namely the mutual attraction between the interfaces. We also suggest that anomalies similar to those in the elastic moduli do not exist in the elastic constants.

    Notes: Longitudinal space-charge forces can be neglected in computer simulations of slowly curving quasilaminar electron beams. A particle-mesh-type algorithm for transverse space-charge forces is developed, and great simplification in numerical calculation of asymmetric electron beams is demonstrated. Some typical examples for kinescope beams are discussed.

    Notes: Reconstruction of current density in electron beams is complicated by distortion of phase space which can require very fine discretization of the beam into trajectories. An efficient discretization of phase space is exploited, using conservation of charge and current in hypertriangle patches, to reconstruct the current density by fitting Gaussians through the distorted hypertriangles. Advantages and limitations are discussed.
