Notes: Summary Functionally terminated bisphenol-A polysulfone oligomers were used in the modification of Epon Resin 828/4,4′-diamino-diphenylsulfone (DDS) network system. Phenolic hydroxyl terminated PSF oligomers were first capped with a large excess of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether or Epon Resin 828 at both ends and then the resulting system was cured with DDS, in a two-step process. During these studies molecular weight and the amount of PSF oligomers incorporated into the network were varied and their effect on the overall properties of the resulting systems were investigated. The capping and curing reactions were followed by using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, GPC, HPLC and DSC techniques. As a function of the oligomer molecular weight, SEM studies showed the formation of two-phase structures with ductile PSF particles dispersed in the continuous epoxy matrix. Mechanical characterization and fracture toughness measurements showed a remarkable increase in KIC or gIC values of the modified networks over that of control, without significant loss in the modulus. This work would appear to be one of the first studies where well bonded ductile glassy modifiers have significantly improved the fracture toughness of highly crosslinked networks.

Notes: Abstract Novel transparent hybrid materials incorporating triethoxysilane endcapped poly(tetramethylene oxide) with tetramethoxysilane have been successfully prepared by a sol-gel process. The molecular weight of PTMO has been varied to study its effect on the structure-property behavior of these hybrid materials. Mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical behavior have been measured; small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) has been utilized to obtain structural information. Based on the experimental results, a simplified morphological model has been suggested to describe these new hybrid systems.

Notes: Summary Titanium has been successfully incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane and poly(tetramethylene oxide) modified TEOS based materials using sol-gel chemistry. Incorporation of titanium into the oligomer modified TEOS based materials altered the physical properties, however, the gross structural features remained the same.

Notes: Abstract A novel use of the process of physical aging has been employed to help distinguish whether the two components of a polymer blend are miscible or immiscible. This approach appears to be particularly useful in the special case where the glass transition temperature of the two respective blend components are relatively close, i.e. 10 to 20°C. This novel approach is demonstrated through the use of blends of racemic polylactide with the optically active L form of the same species. Different molecular weights and their blends were utilized in this study.

Notes: Abstract The gelation of polyisobutylene-based model ionomers with-S03 −K+ terminal groups has been studied in hexane at 25°C. Both molecular architecture and molecular weight were found to significantly influence the concentration at which gelation occurs. Specifically, three-arm star trifunctional ionomers gel at lower concentrations than linear difunctional ionomers of similar molecular weight. In addition, the gelation concentration decreases with increasing molecular weight for the three-arm star trifunctional ionomer, but the results do not fit the relationship reported previously which relates gelation concentration and molecular weight for carboxylated linear telechelic polymers.

Notes: Abstract A sol-gel process has been successfully utilized to produce hybrid materials incorporating polymeric/oligomeric components of polydimethyl siloxane(PDMS) with silicon glasses. All the samples made were transparent and flexible. Dynamic mechanical studies indicate that a portion of the siloxane species is phase-separated while the remainder is well dispersed. The effect of acid content were proven to be significant on the dispersion of the siloxane components and on the structure and properties of final products.

Notes: Summary Metal acetyl acetonates of aluminum, zirconium and zinc have been successfully incorporated into poly (tetramethylene oxide) modified TEOS based materials using sol-gel chemistry. Incorporation of these metal acetyl acetonates required modification of the reaction scheme developed earlier to incorporate titanium(IV) isopropoxide. Gelation rates and the physical properties of the subsequent gelled materials varied as a function of the metal acetyl acetonate used.

Notes: Abstract The effect of residual nuclei on recrystallizatlon has been investigated for a copolyester of glycolide and lactide. Initial spherulitic textures were melted, as observed by hot stage polarizing microscopy, and recrystallized by quenching to a given crystallization temperature. It was noted that the previous melting temperature would strongly influence the morphology of the second crystallization clearly due to residual nuclei remaining from the initial melt. Investigation of the new crystalline texture as well as its influence on subsequent crystallization kinetics was investigated through an Avrami analysis. It was also demonstrated that no memory effects of the initial crystallization temperature were transmitted to the system that had been recrystallized. This was supported by the utilization of small angle x-ray scattering measurements of the long spacing.
