Summary The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is discussed as a high resolution supplement to an optical microscope. The maximum velocity of the tip relative to the sample is estimated. A design of a large area STM is sketched and first scans of a gold covered mica surfaces imagined in constant-current mode with tip speeds up to 20 μm/s are shown.
