    Notes: We describe a computer based ac calorimetry technique for small samples (m〈100 mg) at low temperatures (T〈2 K) and in high magnetic fields (B≤20 T). We have found this technique suitable for relative calorimetry in noisy environments. Extension of this technique to absolute calorimetry is also discussed.

    Notes: Of the three known high effective mass ("heavy fermion'') superconductors, UPt3 has quite different properties from the rather similar CeCu2Si2 and UBe13. In particular, UPt3 has a much different temperature dependence of its resistivity below 300 K, a much lower initial slope of the superconducting critical field, H'c2(Tc), a much greater dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, on lattice perfection (proportional to resistivity ratio), and a much different temperature dependence of the low temperature normal state specific heat, Cn. This temperature dependence of Cn in fact includes a T3 ln T term for UPt3, compared to approximately a T−2 dependence for UBe13 and CeCu2Si2 at low temperatures. The presence of a T3 ln T term in Cn for UPt3, coupled with the extreme dependence of Tc on lattice perfection, has led to speculation that the pairing of the superconducting electrons in UPt3 may not be between opposite spins, but between parallel spins, i.e., p-wave instead of s-wave pairing. Recently, further experimental and theoretical evidence has been found supporting this speculation that UPt3 may be a p-wave superconductor. The present work surveys the properties of UPt3, including new results on the spin fluctuation behavior in the normal state of UPt3.

    Notes: In a study of the plant communities of two Australian rainforests, it was found that pioner species had high levels of nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1) and were predominantly leaf nitrate assimilators. Under- and over-storey species had low levels of shoot and root nitrate reductase activity, and many of them showed little capacity for nitrate reduction even when nitrate ions were freely available. Although closed-forest species have lower levels of nitrate reductase than those of gaps and forest margins, their total nitrogen contents were similar, suggesting the former utilize nitrogen sources other than nitrate ions. Glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2) was present in the leaves of all species examined. In the leaves of pioneer species the chloroplastic isoform of glutamine synthetase predominted, while in most of the species typical of closed-forest the cytosolic isoform accounted for at least 40% of total leaf activity. Low levels of chloroplastic glutamine synthetase were correlated with a low capacity for leaf nitrate reduction, and both are characteristic of many species that regenerate and grow for some time in shade. Low levels of chloroplastic glutamine synthetase imply that, in some of these woody plants, photorespiratory ammonia is re-assimilated via cytosolic glutamine synthetase.

    Notes: Photosynthesis and stomatal characteristics of the angiosperm parasite Striga her-monthica (Del.) Benth. have been compared with those of Antirrhinum majus L. cv. Suttons Yellow Rust Resistant, a related, non-parasitic species. The concentration of photosynthetic pigments in S. hermonthica leaves was less than 40% of those of A. majus leaves. Light saturated CO2 assimilation rate of S. hermonthica was less than 40% that of A. majus on a chlorophyll basis and under 20% than of A. majus on a leaf area basis.Stomata of Striga showed only partial closure in darkness, remained open in water stressed leaves and showed little response to exogenously applied abscisic acid. Stomatal conductance and transpiration were considerably higher in Striga compared with Antirrhinum. The high transpiration and low photosynthetic rates of S. hermonthica resulted in a low water use efficiency. The water relations of Striga leaves, while seemingly inappropriate for growth in drought prone environments, do appear to maximise nutrient and water acquisition from the host and as such may be an adaptation to the parasitic habit.

    Notes: Abstract. Growth and gas exchange measurements are used to formulate a carbon balance model to describe the sorghum-Striga hermonthica host-Parasite association. S. hermonthica reduces the growth and radically alters the architecture of infected sorghum plants. Grain and stem weight are reduced, whilst leaf and root biomass are maintained. Losses in host productivity result from two processes: export of carbon to the parasite and Parasite-induced reductions in host photosynthesis. The latter occurs before the emergence of the Parasite above ground and accounts for 80% of the Predicted loss in production over the lifecycle of the association. S. hermonthica is dependent on carbon exported from the host, since the plant has low rates of photosynthesis coupled with high rates of respiration. Host-derived carbon accounts for approximately one-third of the total parasite carbon requirement.

    Notes: Abstract Specific heat measurements on superconductingLu 2 Fe 3 Si 5 reveal a strong sample dependence of the residual specific heat contribution γ s , belowT c , effectively ruling out the possibility of a two-band model. Upper critical fieldH c2 results for Lu2Fe3Si5, Sc2Fe3Si5, and LaFe4P12 show a very largeH c2 with an unusual temperature dependence for Lu2Fe3Si5, in contrast to the latter two compounds, implying a strongly sample-dependentH c2 as well. Intrinsic magnetic impurities arising from structural disorder and defects are possibly the origin of these anomalous superconducting state properties of Lu2Fe3Si5.

    Notes: Abstract The pronounced maxima in the resistivity,p(T), and specific heat,C(T), observed in UBe13 near 2 K are partially suppressed by both field and doping. Normal-state U0.97Th0.03Be13 and UBe12.94Cu0.06 exhibit remarkable upturns in their Sommerfeld coefficient γ(T)=C(T)/T below 0.5 K which are strongly depressed by a magnetic field. The additional specific heat anomaly that exists in U0.97Th0.03Be13 belowT c is not reflected by any feature in the measurements of the DC Meissner effect.

    Notes: Abstract In order to investigate the normal state spin fluctuation behavior of UPt3, we have measured the low temperature resistivity and specific heat C of U(Pt0.8Pd0.2)3, which we find to be close to the phase stability boundary for the hexagonal UPt3 structure. The evidence for spin fluctuations observed in UPt3, aT 3 ln (T/T SF) upturn inC/T below 10 K, is totally suppressed in U(Pt0.8Pd0.2)3, and the γ value, proportional to the dressed density of states, is decreased by 50% compared to pure UPt3. This extreme sensitivity to substitution by isoelectronic Pd for Pt indicates that the spin fluctuations in UPt3 depend critically on the hybridization of the U electrons, U-U separation equal to 4.2 Å, with the electrons of the intervening atoms.

    Notes: Summary The ability of the compatible solute, proline, to affect the behavior of proteins has been examined in many different systems by many researches. In the present study of protein solvation, proline has been shown to prevent or diminish, in a concentration-dependent manner, the glutamine synthetase-precipitating ability of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The effects of PEG concentration and molecular weight are reduced by proline, and the interaction is strongly affected by pH. PEG causes precipitation of many proteins, and the ability of proline to reduce the precipitation of two non-enzymatic conjugated proteins, alfalfa mosaic virus and an3H-testosterone/antiserum complex, was also examined. Proline was effective in reducing the PEG-induced precipitation of both proteins. Virus precipitation by PEG and its alleviation by proline are influenced by pH. The increased virus-precipitating effect of PEG in the presence of salt (NaCl) is also alleviated by proline. The precipitation of the radioimmune complex by PEG is diminished by proline and by a mixture of free amino acids. These results indicate the generality of the three-way interaction between proline, protein and PEG. They may be of importance for extraction of proteins from biological systems and in studies of enzyme inactivation or protein denaturation in a cytoplasmic milieu. The results suggest that the protective effects of some amino acids are at least additive and are consistent with the conclusion that the compatible solutes protect protein-containing systems against the unfavorable consequences of dehydration and other stresses, by increasing the tendency of the system to maintain thestatus quo.
