    Notes: The Raman spectra of hydrogen-bonded crystalline HCONH2 and HCOND2 have been measured up to 10 GPa at 300 K in a gasketed diamond anvil cell. The frequencies of the in-plane intermolecular stretching mode which characterizes the hydrogen bond along the zig–zag chain increase with increasing pressure with a slope (dν/dP) of 11.1 cm−1/GPa, and its slope becomes steeper, to 19.2 cm−1/GPa, at about 5.0 GPa (=Pc). The frequencies of the intramolecular ND2 stretching mode decrease with increasing pressure at all pressure range except around Pc where they show an increase of 20 cm−1. It turns out from these results that (1) the hydrogen (deuteron) bonds along the chain direction become stronger in response to the pressure, and their increasing strength are more developed above Pc, and (2) the other type of hydrogen (deuteron) bonds which bridge the chains to make their planar hydrogen-bonded network are weakened around Pc. The pressure-induced phase transition at Pc is discussed by focusing on the behavior of two types of hydrogen bondings and the effect of the interplanar interaction.

    Notes: Brillouin scattering was measured at room temperature in liquid and solid CS2 in a diamond anvil cell up to 70 kbar. In the liquid phase, the acoustic velocity and the refractive index were determined as a function of pressure: The former allowed us to determine the equation of state, ρ=0.206 P0.40+1.144 (1 kbar≤P≤13 kbar) with density ρ in g/cm3 and pressure P in kbar, and the latter was well fitted by the Lorentz–Lorenz relation yielding the pressure-insensitive polarizability of 8.20×10−24 cm3. In the solid phase, the pressure dependence of longitudinal- and transverse-acoustic phonon velocities was determined up to the appearance of black CS2 which was formed at pressures above 70 kbar, and the high optical and elastic anisotropy of crystalline CS2 is discussed.

    Notes: This paper outlines the status of a 6-GeV synchrotron radiation designed at RIKEN. This facility consists of a main storage ring, a booster synchrotron, a 1.5-GeV preinjector linac, positron injection linacs, and others. The electronan GeV. The storage ring has a circumference of 1069.2 m and 7-m-long straight sections for insertion devices. The lattice of the main ring is a Chasman–Green-type one and has 36 periodicity. The low emittance (εx=8.2 nm rad) and large dynamic aperture are expected even with field errors and misalignments of magnetic elements. Three years of a preconstruction research and development period and 5 years of construction period are scheduled.

    Notes: Modulation-induced mode partition in distributed feedback lasers was investigated by photon statistics and bit-error-rate measurements. Its origin is explained for the first time in terms of the transient index changes and the resulting corrugation dephasing.     Notes: In order to study the process of reaction in crystals, it is necessary to observe decomposition of precursor and formation of the product during the transformation. Since such change is related to the structures of both the phases, x-ray diffraction is the most powerful method for this purpose. However, not only Bragg reflections but diffuse scattering or satellite reflections are observed occasionally in the early stage of the process and intensities of those scattering are extremely weak although they are important to analyze the process. Therefore, use of synchrotron radiation is desirable to study those problems. There are many compounds which show topotaxy during phase transformation. Since the product of such transformation is formed in an oriented manner under the influence of the structure of the precursor, diffraction patterns of the product are similar to those of a single crystal and anomaly of the diffraction can be easily detected. We have consequently studied the process of dehydration in α-AlOOH which indicates topotaxy in the process of dehydration. α-AlOOH transforms to α-Al2O3 at about 500 °C when it is heated in air. Lima-de-Faria (1963) found that the products revealed distinct satellite reflections along c* direction on x-ray diffraction patterns when the samples are quenched to room temperature in the early stage of reaction. Similar phenomena are also known in dehydration of α-FeOOH to α-Fe2O3 (both of them are isostructural to α-AlOOH and α-Al2O3, respectively). No interpretation has yet been established to the origin of the satellites. We have analyzed the averaged structure, interpreted the satellite reflections and change of profile of the satellites, and have elucidated the process of the reaction. The results indicate that the origin of the satellites is ascribed to the modulation of Al content along c direction and the change of the profile to the change in the mode of the modulation.

    Notes: This paper describes the performance of a four-circle diffractometer installed at the Photon Factory for extensive use with synchrotron radiation for various investigations in the field of solid state physics. Its main part is based on a Huber 5020.4 type diffractometer with a crystal analyzer designed for vertical diffraction plane attitude. The diffractometer is mounted on a carriage table, which can precisely adjust the position of the diffractometer with respect to the incident beam monochromatized by successive reflection from a pair of Si(111) crystals. With a perfect crystal used as the analyzer the large size of the ω and 2θ circles enables us to make high resolution (ΔQ/Q∼10−4) measurements of x-ray scattering intensity distribution from a single crystal. The large space in the center of the diffractometer permits us to put a pressurizing cell or a cryostat on the φ table for scattering measurements at controlled pressures and temperatures. Selected examples of the application are presented.

    Notes: A diffractometer has been constructed for structural studies of high-temperature melt with synchrotron radiation. It was designed to measure diffracted intensities from the free surface of a molten sample by scanning a scintillation counter with a fixed glancing angle of the incident beam. In order to heat samples up to 1500 °C, a small electric furnace is attached to the diffractometer. It carries a hemicircular (100 mm in diameter) cover, which has a window for the passage of x rays. The window is covered with a Kapton film. The sample container made of 30 Rh-Pt is mounted at the center of the furnace. A test measurement was performed on GeO2. Monochromatic beams with λ=1.32 A and its second harmonics were taken out of synchrotron radiation by a β-alumina crystal (d002=11.3 A) and used as incident beams. To partial scattering curves obtained with λ and λ/2 were combined to a single curve after correction for absorption. The radial distribution function obtained from these data is in good agreement with that previously reported which was derived from diffraction data collected on a conventional diffractometer.

    Notes: A compact electron storage ring (JSR) is under construction in order to study accelerator technologies and to be used as the test ring aiming at a highly brilliant synchrotron radiation facility (6–8 GeV). The JSR lattice is a double-focusing achromatic type. The circumference is 20.5 m. However, even in this small ring, one straight section with a length of ∼1.5 m, where the dispersion is free, is provided for the insertion device study. The electron beam is supplied by the linac with an energy of 150 MeV, and the stored energy is slowly increased up to 300 MeV. Power supplies of all magnets and the rf system are controlled by a real-time computer through optical fiber links, and signals of beam monitors are stored in the same computer so that it is easy to test any type of control procedures.

    Notes: A multiundulator, Revolver No. 19, was constructed and installed at the straight section (B 18-B19) of the 2.5-GeV Photon Factory storage ring. The mechanical structure of Revolver No. 19 consists of a main frame and two rotatable beams with four base plates, on which undulator magnets with four different lengths of period are mounted. A pair of undulator magnets with a desired period length can be selected by revolving the rotatable beams. The energy range of the radiation covered by fundamental peaks from the undulator magnets is from 7.8 to 1150 eV.
