Abstract The possible reactions of a pure metal with a multicomponent gas atmosphere containing binary compounds as X2, Y2, XiYj may be extensive. It is shown that even in this case, the phase-stability diagram for the M-X- Y system may be used to predict which product can exist in the complex scale built up during the oxidation of a pure metal at high temperature. Thus, a complete description of an atmosphere generated by SO2-O2-S2 mixtures may be given. On this basis, the Cu-O-S and Ni-O-S systems are examined, and the formation of sulfides Cu2S and Ni3S2 are explained.
