    Description: The superposition of the first satellite geoid determined by Iszak upon Ootilla's geoid was based on surface gravity determinations. Good agreement was observed except over the Pacific area of the globe. The poor agreement over the Pacific was interpreted as the result of inadequate observations there. Many geoids were determined from satellite observations, including Doppler measurements. It is found that the geoid is the result of density differences in the mantle maintained since the primeval Earth by its finite strength. Various models based on this assumption are developed.

    Description: Consideration is given to: variations in the Gauss coefficients of the geomagnetic potential over the last several hundred years; eccentric geomagnetic dipole drift; and evidence for geomagnetic jerks from 1931 to 1971. Among other topics discussed are: models of the geomagnetic field in western Europe from 1960 to 1980; the external and internal parts of the geomagnetic jerk of 1970; secular variation of the magnetic mean energy density at the source layer depth; and motions at the core surface in the geostrophic approximation. Consideration is also given to: the unpredictability of geomagnetic secular variation; the use of short-term core-mantle coupling and geomagnetic variation impulses as Lagrangian tracers of core motions; and a comparison of two sequential geomagnetic polarity transitions in the upper Olduvai and the lower Jarmillio in the Southern Hemisphere.

    Description: Solid state creep being exponentially dependent on temperature must dominate the mechanical behavior of the mantles of terrestrial planets beneath their lithospheres. General arguments suggest that the lithospheres of the Moon and Mars are about 200 km thick; the Earth, Venus and Mercury much less. Short wavelength gravity anomalies are explained by the finite strength of the lithosphere: the lunar mascons being an example. The good correlation of the Venus and Mars gravity anomalies with topography up to spherical harmonics of degrees 10-15 is in striking contrast to the lack of correlation between the long wavelength components of the geoid and the continent-ocean distribution or even the plates. Attempts have been made to explain the former correlations by isostatic models but the depths of compensation seem implausible. Low degree harmonics of the gravity fields of the terrestrial planets as is certainly the case in the Earth must arise from the density variations driving solid state convection. In the case of Venus the less dense differentiated materials of the highlands seems to be positioned over the singular points of the convection pattern. Thus the correlated gravity field does not arise from the highlands but from the density difference in the convecting interior. In the Earth lack of correlation seems to arise from the fact that the plates have moved relative to the convection pattern the last 100 M yr.

    Description: Efforts to find some scaling law for the dipole moments of planets seem illusory for, although dynamo theory is still in a rudimentary state, once the critical magnetic Reynolds Number is exceeded it appears that the field strength is determined by the energy source, it it is permissible to treat the core as a heat engine. For this reason the lunar magnetic field is of special significance as the paleomagnetic evidence strongly suggests that the surface field was about 1 G 3.9 by diminishing exponentially to about .02 G 3.2 by ago and completely disappearing some time later.

    Notes: Abstract The cause- or causes-of the excitation of the Chandler wobble is one of the most intriguing problems in geophysics. As a result of one of the most valuable examples of an international programme, the positions of the pole have been determined since the late 19th century with remarkable accuracy. These data have always been accepted as of great importance in the study of the atmosphere, oceans and solid Earth. Recently, new techniques have greatly improved the accuracy with which the polar motion can be determined. Interpretation of the older data was made much more difficult because of their errors-for example the interesting suggestion that earthquakes were a cause of the excitation (by D. E. Smylie and L. Manshinha) could not be tested because their effects, if any, were lost in the noise. With the great improvement in the data it is now possible to suppose that comparable advances will be made in the theoretical interpretation. A discussion meeting at the Royal Astronomical Society on 8 May, 1987 on this topic was held and the following gives a short survey of this topic, consisting of brief summaries given by the speakers. This review is therefore a collective one which it is hoped will make more widely known these great technical advances and to fundamental interest of the phenomena of thepolar motion.
