Notes: Abstract. The pilchard, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum), is parasitized in coastal waters in the Languedoc-Roussillon region (South of France) by a copepod species which belongs to the genus Lernaeenicus (Siphonostomatoida, Pennellidae). These mesoparasites become established in various parts of the body of the host (eye, lateral muscle or muscle at the bases of fins). Examination of specimens which had penetrated at the root of pectoral fins revealed that some had penetrated the heart. A curious case of transcardiac parasitism was observed. Host tissue reactions caused by the presence of parasites are described.

Notes: A pulsed photothermal method is proposed for the detection of delaminations in layered materials. The surface of the material is heated by a focused laser pulse to a few degrees above the ambient temperature, and the induced thermoelastic displacement is detected by a laser interferometer. Unbonded areas are characterized by their thermoelastic bending behavior, in addition to their thermal expansion, because of the induced temperature gradients both in the radial and axial directions. A theoretical analysis and an experimental investigation of this behavior are described in order to point out the most significant parameters. An application of the nondestructive inspection of Al-epoxy honeycomb panels is presented.

Notes: It is currently thought in the knowledge-based systems (KBS) domain that sophisticated tools are necessary for helping an expert with the difficult task of knowledge acquisition. The problem of detecting inconsistencies is especially crucial. The risk of inconsistencies increases with the size of the knowledge base; for large knowledge bases, detecting inconsistencies “by hand” or even by a superficial survey of the knowledge base is impossible. Indeed, most inconsistencies are due to the interaction between several rules via often deep deductions. In this paper, we first state the problem and define our approach in the framework of classical logic. We then describe a complete method to prove the consistency (or the inconsistency) of knowledge bases that we have implemented in the COVADIS system.

Notes: Abstract We present an interpretation of gravity data acquired in 1984 by the French R/V Jean Charcot on the submarine part of the eastern flank of Piton de la Fournaise volcano. We comment on the Bouguer anomaly map and give a quantitative interpretation of three gravity profiles. The main results are that a gravity high over Grand Brûlé, the lower subaerial part of the eastern flank, does not extend far offshore and that an anomalous topographic feature, discovered in 1982 on the submarine eastern flank, is characterized by a large negative anomaly. We propose three hypotheses to explain the origin of this anomaly, i. e., it marks the site of a new volcano, or it is a consequence of lateral volcanism from a volcano older than Piton de la Fournaise, or more probably, it represents a great landslide deposit.

Notes: Abstract Non-isothermal and isothermal TG studies on the cation distribution in submicronic titanomagnetites; Fe3−xTixO4 with 0〈x〈0.82 are reported. For x〈0.61, these titanomagnetites could be oxidized at temperatures below 500° to titanium-substituted magnetites which have a higher vacancy content than that of γ-Fe2O3. The DTA results show that the temperature of oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ ions is increased, whereas the temperature of phase change is decreased with increasing titanium substitution. The kinetics of oxidation is found to be governed by the law of diffusion for variable working conditions and for different extents of the vacancies created at the solid-gas interface. The diffusion of iron(II) ions located at octahedral sites proceeds with a lower activation energy than that of iron(II) ions located at tetrahedral sites. Diffusion rates were discerned to be composition-dependent and the variations can be identified with the distribution of the iron ions in sublattices.

For the particles with mean diameters ranging from 95 to 950 Å and specific surfaces of the order of 100.0 to 10.0 m2/g,ΔH varied from −77.3±2.5 to −61.0±2.5 kJ/mol, and is identified as a linear function of the size of the particles, as depicted by the relationshipΔH=ΔH intrinsic+ΔH D, whereΔH D represents the particle size-dependent part of the enthalpy of oxidation.
