    Notes: Modulation of evaporation rate is desirable as it significantly increases the signal detection capability by making it possible to use phase sensitive techniques. An easy method for achieving modulation of evaporation rate via control of focus coil current is described. This method avoids the expense as well as complexities involved in doing the same by switching the e-gun acceleration voltage (〉10 kV) or switching the grid bias on the e-gun (〉2 kV).

    Notes: While conducting e-beam evaporation from a water-cooled crucible at power densities in the range of 1–4×104 W cm−2, with an e-beam spot size that is small in comparison to the crucible dimensions, a nonlinearity is observed in the temperature versus power characteristic. A simple model is proposed to explain this nonlinearity. The physical basis of the proposed model is discussed.

    Notes: e-beam evaporation is accompanied by production of a significant ionic component, which is a result of interaction of electrons with residual gas atoms as well as vapor atoms. In this study we show that the interaction of primary beam electrons with vapor atoms can be controlled to a certain extent by choosing the correct magnetic lens current. This technique can be used to reduce or enhance the extent of ionization depending upon the application.

    Notes: Abstract The film formation method has been successfully used to grow single crystals and other complex morphological features of low melting form (LMF) and high melting form (HMF) of trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPIP). Below 40 °C dilute amyl acetate solution gave hexagonal shaped LMF crystals. Thick and elongated hexagonal shaped morphology was shown by HMF crystals at temperatures above 40 °C. Straight faces and sharp corners of the single crystals, and also of complex crystals, acquired round shapes when highly polydispersed TPIP was used for crystallization.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die vorliegenden Untersuchungen sollen einen Beitrag zur Strukturaufklärung von amorphen Polymeren mit starren Polymerketten darstellen. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Celluloseacetate (CA) mit verschiedenen Substitutionsgraden (DS) hergestellt. Die Proben wurden durch IR-Spektroskopie, Differential-Scanning-Calorimetry (DSC) und dynamisch-mechanische Analyse (DMA) charakterisiert. Rasterelektronenmikroskopische Aufnahmen von gefriergebrochenen Oberflächen dieser Polymeren zeigten, daß außer lamellaren Strukturen auch kugelige Strukturen beobachtbar waren.
    Notes: In the present investigation an attempt has been made to throw light on the structure of stiff chain amorphous polymers. For this purpose cellulose acetates (CA) having different degrees of substitution (DS) were prepared. The samples were characterised by IR-spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Scanning electron micrographs of the cryogenically fractured surfaces of these polymers showed that along with lamellar structures, nodular structures were also observable.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wird eine einfache Methode zur Auswertung des Molvolumens der Repetiereinheit Vu eines Polymeren und dem des Lösungsmittels beschrieben, die zur Bestimmung der thermodynamischen Parameter für das System Polymeres-Lösungsmittel verwendet wird. Die thermodynamischen Parameter, die unter Verwendung dieser Werte berechnet wurden, stehen in guter Übereinstimmung mit Literaturwerten.
    Notes: A simple method for the evaluation of the molar volume of the repeating unit Vu of a polymer and that of the diluent used for determining the thermodynamic parameters from the fusion of polymer-diluent systems has been reported. The thermodynamic parameters calculated using these values are in fairly good agreement with those reported in the literature.

    Description / Table of Contents: Mit Polyacrylnitril gepfropfte Stärke wurde aus Stärkegranulat von herkömmlicher Hirse (Penicum Miliaceum, L) hergestellt, und seine Verarbeitungsmöglichkeiten unter Verwendung des Brabender Plasticorders wurden untersucht. Glycerin als bekannter Weichmacher für Stärke ist als Weichmacher für dieses Polymere nicht geeignet. Eine Mischung von 1:1 Stärke : Stärkepfropfpolyacrylnitril und 25% Glycerin kann verarbeitet und zu einem Film extrudiert werden. Die Festigkeit des Films war geringer als die der reinen Stärke. Der Film, der aus dem Pfropfcopolymeren und mit Polymethylmethacrylat gepfropfter Stärke hergestellt war, hatte eine hohe Zugfestigkeit. Über die Daten der Fließaktivierungsenergie, die mit einem Torsionsrheometer erhalten wurden, wird ebenfalls berichtet.
    Notes: Starch-graft-polyacrylonitrile (S-g-PAN) has been prepared from granular starch of common millet (Penicum miliaceum, L) and its processibility has been examined using the Brabender Plasticorder. Glycerine, a known plasticizer for starch does not work as plasticizer for S-g-PAN. A mixture of 1 : 1 starch : S-g-PAN and 25% glycerine can be processed and a film can be extruded. The strength of the film was less than that of pure starch. The film prepared from the mixed graft copolymer of S-g-PAN and S-g-PMA had high tensile strength. The data on flow activation energy obtained from the torque-rheometer are also reported.
