Notes: Summary o-Aminoacetophenone is a pheromone produced by virgin honeybee queens and released with feces. In small social groups, the pheromone repels and is used to terminate agonistic interactions between queens and workers.

Notes: Many of the microstructural features of critical importance in technological materials occur over the size range of a few nanometres to a few hundred nanometres. The ability of small-angle scattering techniques to provide microstructural information in this critical size range has led to the extensive and highly successful utilization of small-angle scattering in the fields of polymer science and metallurgy. Recently, perhaps driven by the renewed interest in ceramics as technological materials, the applications of small-angle scattering to studies of fine ceramics have begun to increase. Selected examples from past investigations, which include fundamental studies of damage accumulation, phase transformation and fabrication techniques, will serve to illustrate the applicability of small-angle scattering in ceramics research and identify likely areas of future advancement.

Notes: [Auszug] Two cloned trypanosome populations (247-L and 386AA) were fed, either separately or as an equal mixture, through a membrane to different groups of tsetse flies (see Fig. 1). Flies showing the presence of metacyclic-stage trypanosomes (indicating completion of full cyclical development) were allowed ...

Notes: Summary Recent studies have demonstrated a genotypic component to the division of labor among worker honeybees. However, these studies used artificially-selected strains of bees or colonies derived from queens that were instrumentally inseminated with the semen from very few males. We present evidence for genotypic variability among groups of workers performing tasks in colonies with naturally-mated queens. These results demonstrate that genetic structure is a level of social organization in honeybees.

Notes: Abstract Silicon nitride matrix composites containing particles of SiC, TiC, and BN were fabricated and tested for improved contact damage resistance at 900° C in an oxidizing atmosphere. Contact damage resistance was characterized with profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, bend tests, and coefficient of friction measurements. The results of these tests indicated that composites containing TiC particles showed dramatically improved friction and wear behaviour compared to the SiC- and BN-containing composites, as well as the monolithic Si3N4. Auger spectroscopy indicated that the improved behaviour was due to the formation of a lubricious oxide containing both titanium and silicon on the surface of the composite and the transfer of some of the oxide to the rider.

Notes: Abstract Small-angle neutron scattering has been used to characterize the cavity distribution in crept samples of a hot-pressed silicon carbide, which contained a thin continuous amorphous phase, and a sintered alumina, which contained no amorphous phase. The compression creep experiments were performed under cyclic loading at 1600° C and a frequency of 0.33 Hz. Comparison of the cavitation rates under cyclic loading with previously measured rates under static loading indicates that cavitation in the silicon carbide was unaffected by the cyclic loading, while the cavity volume fraction and the cavity size in the alumina were slightly increased by the cyclic loading. The results suggest that 0.33 Hz is too slow a frequency to affect the stress distribution and thus cavitation in the glassy phase containing silicon carbide, but it is rapid enough to accelerate cavitation in the absence of a glassy phase. This hypothesis is supported both by experimental results from other ceramic and metal systems and by calculations of characteristic stress relaxation times.
