    Notes: In situ resistivity measurements have been utilized to study the reaction and silicide formation between cobalt and amorphous silicon thin films from room temperature to 800 °C. In conjunction, structure and composition changes were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. Formation of Co2Si, CoSi, and CoSi2 were observed. Interfacial reaction to form Co2Si occurs at approximately 400 °C. In bilayers of excess silicon, CoSi forms at approximately 520 °C and, if free silicon is still present, CoSi2 forms at about 550 °C. In the case of excess cobalt, Co2Si forms first and is followed by a cobalt-rich solid solution. Co3Si silicide was not observed.

    Notes: Abstract Given a family of subsetsℱ of an arbitrary groundsetE, acover ofℱ is any setC ⊂E having non-empty intersection with every subset inℱ. In this paper we deal with thecovering polytope, i.e., the convex hull of the incidence vectors of all the covers ofℱ. In Section 2 we review all the known properties of the covering polytope. In Sections 3 and 4 we introduce two new classes of non-Boolean facets of such a polytope. In Sections 5 and 6 we describe some non-sequential lifting procedures. In Section 7 a generalization of the notion ofweb introduced by L.E. Trotter is presented together with the facets of the covering polytope produced by such a structure. Moreover, the strong connections between several combinatorial problems and the covering problem are pointed out and, exploiting those connections, some examples are presented of new facets for the Knapsack and Acyclic Subdigraph polytopes.

    Notes: Abstract Modern computer technology allows dynamical astronomers to investigate the long term stability of real systems as thoroughly as ever. However, the process is not straightforward and new problems need to be solved. This work deals with only one such problem: the construction-from the numerical integration- of a secular perturbation theory that is able to describe the dynamical behavior of the system. The discussion refers to the outer planets and is based on the knowledge acquired by the author during her participation in project LONGSTOP. A digital filter is used in order to reduce the output and eliminate short periodic terms. Filtering uncovers long term variations in the semimajor axes. From the filtered output a secular perturbation theory is constructed in the assumption that the solution is regular, as secular perturbation theories can only be constructed for regular solutions. If we succeed, this means that the solution is indeed regular for the computed span of time; if not-and this can be established in a rigorous way-it has to be concluded a posteriori that the solution is not regular. The LONGSTOP 1A and 1B integrations show well that as the timespan of the integration increases it is possible to detect the non-regular behavior of the solution. This happens in the eccentricity of Saturn at the 10−4 level.

    Notes: Abstract Hierarchical stability of the outer Solar System is monitored through its 3-body subsystems by using numerically computed ephemerides for 5×106 yr. It is found that the stability parameters of Sun-Jupiter-Saturn and Sun-Uranus-Neptune oscillate in anti-phase in ∼1.1×106 yr. The mechanism responsible for this locking is a secular resonance between Uranus' perihelion and Jupiter's aphelion: the difference between the two librates within ∼±70° with the same period of ∼1.1×106 yr.

    Notes: Abstract The equations of motion of the 2+2 body problem (two interacting particles in the gravitational field of two much more massive primaries m1 and m2 in circular keplerian orbit) have an integral analogous to the Jacobi integral of the circular 2+1 body problem. We show here that with 2+2 bodies this integral does not give rise to Hill stability, i.e. to confinement for all time in a portion of the configuration space not allowing for some close approaches to occur. This is because all the level manifolds are connected and all exchanges of bodies between the regions surroundingm 1,m 2 and infinity do not contradict the conservation of the integral. However, it is worth stressing that some of these exchanges are physically meaningless, because they involve either unlimited extraction of potential energy from the binary formed by the small bodies (without taking into account their physical size) or significant mutual perturbations between the small masses without close approach, a process requiring, for the Sun-Jupiter-two asteroids system, timescales longer than the age of the Solar System.

    Notes: Abstract Samples of soils and vegetation from the mining area of South-West Sardinia (Italy) were analyzed for Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cu content. The area (more than 100 km2) is inhabited by many thousands of people; land utilization includes mainly grapes on some small plains and permanent sheep pasture on the hills. The levels of Pb, Zn, and Cd were found to be exceptionally high in most samples. Lead concentration was up to 71000 μg g−1 in the soils and 4000 jig g−1 in vegetation; Cd concentration was found up to 665 μg g−1 in soils and 26.5 μg g−1 in vegetation. The heavy metal content of some soil samples was highly variable. Data show that Pb is easily absorbed by plant roots and translocated to foliage. In spite of the high heavy metal level, no signs of toxicity were apparent in vegetation.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years it has become of geophysical interest to detect a possible time variation of the low-degree coefficients of the Earth's gravity field, in particular the (2, 2) tesseral harmonic. We investigate the possibility of detecting such a phenomenon via analysis of the tracking data from LAGEOS, the passive geodynamics satellite tracked by laser stations on the ground. For this purpose the main problems are caused: (i) for short orbital arcs, by the irregular distribution in time of the tracking data, and by the dynamical effects of oceanic tides, which cannot be easily separated from the effects of geopotential changes; (ii) for long orbital arcs, by the difficulty of reliably predicting the variable drag-like force that is causing a slow semimajor axis decay. We estimate that a relative accuracy of the order of 10−4 in the (2, 2) coefficients can be reached provided that a larger number of higher technology laser stations is available, and that better modelling is possible of the drag-like force. Both these conditions seem quite unrealistic at present. If a relative accuracy better than 10−4 has to be reached, an effective separation of the tidal perturbations is also needed, since they give rise to perturbations with a similar signature.
