    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die kalorimetrische und rheologische Charakterisierung der Ansätze von hitzhärtbarem Harz wird beschrieben. Die Ansätze enthalten ein mit 60–120% methyliertem Maleinsäure-Adduktanhydrid gehärtetes Novolackepoxidharz. Die kalorimetrisch bestimmte Epoxid-konversion wurde auf die theoretisch aus der nicht-linearen Flory'schen Kopolymerisationstheorie berechneten und experimentell durch rheologische Tests bestätigten Erstarrungsgrenzen bezogen.
    Abstract: Резюме Описаны калориметри ческие и реологическ ие характеристики терм ореактивных резин, содержащих нов олак-эпокси резину со вместно с ангидридом метилиро ванной малеиновой кислоты в качестве от вердителя. Превращен ие эпокси-резины, опреде ленное калориметрич еским методом, взаимосвяза но с пределами гелеоб разования, вычисленных по теори и Флори для нелинейной копол имеризации и экспери ментально подтвержденных в рео логических испытаниях.
    Notes: Abstract Calorimetric and rheological characterizations of thermosetting resin formulations containing a novalac epoxy resin hardened with 60 to 120 parts per hundred of methylated maleic acid adduct anhydride are described. The calorimetrically determined epoxy conversion has been related to the gelation limits theoretically calculated from Flory's non-linear copolymerization theory and experimentally verified in rheological tests.

    Notes: The effect of filler content and applied electrical field on the electrical resistivity of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) filled with aluminum particles was investigated. The resistivity of such composite suddenly decreases by several orders of magnitude at a critical volume concentration φc. In addition, for filler contents lower than φc, the PMMA/Al composite undergoes a transition from a high to a low resistance material in correspondence of a critical value of the external applied electrical field. This value has been related to thermal breakdown occurring in the regions between conductive particles. Moreover, the permittivity spectrum as a function of frequency is reported for composites of several filler contents, and the Lal and Parshad law was used to correlate the experimental data.

    Notes: Blends of polycarbonate (PC) and poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-p-oxybenzoate) (PET/PHB60) were prepared by melt-blending. Physical and/or chemical interactions between the two phases of the system were studied by thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Rheological measurements in shear flow were carried out both in the low and high shear rate regions in the temperature range of the existence of the mesophase. At low liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) content, the blends showed flow curves similar to those of the unfilled PC, while at higher LCP percentages the rheological behavior of the pure LCP was resembled. Moreover, in the whole shear range, the viscosity values of such blends were in between those of the pure polymers. The influence of the addition of 10% LCP on the mechanical properties of the PC was investigated. Fiber-spinning was performed under different experimental conditions, and it was found that opportune drawing conditions are necessary to improve the modulus of the matrix. Morphological analyses of the pure LCP and of the blends were related to the rheological and mechanical behavior of these systems. While the LCP exhibited an elevated dimensional stability, the inclusion of the LCP in PC matrix did not improve the dimensional stability of the blends.

    Notes: The possible multimodal sorption mechanisms in glassy amorphous poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) are presented. By varying the penetrant-polymer affinity, experimental temperature, and external solvent activity, a broad range of sorption behaviors from ideal Fickian diffusion to limiting relaxation controlled kinetics is observed. In particular, water, methylene chloride, and n-heptane sorption kinetics are analyzed and interpreted on the basis of the multiple transport mechanisms. Low uptake liquid n-heptane sorption follows ordinary Fickian diffusion. Analogously, water vapor at low activity, is sorbed in small amounts in the same limiting mode while, at higher activities, the moderately higher penetrant uptakes induce slow relaxation coupled with ideal Fickian diffusion. The highly interacting methylene chloride leads to ideal Fickian diffusion only at very low activities, while anomalous non-ideal Fickian diffusion and limiting Case II and diffusion controlled swelling are observed at moderate and at high solvent activities, respectively. Limiting Case II sorption of methylene chloride in PEEK has been observed only at a very low temperature (-32°C). The optical microscopy observations of cryogenically fractured samples contacted with liquid methylene chloride at 5, 20 and 36°C revealed the presence of a sharp front moving linearly with the square root of time. Solvent induced crystallization in methylene chloride swollen samples was detected by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Finally, sorption from liquid methylene chloride/n-heptane solutions with varying compositions are presented. The progressive increase of the more high sorbing methylene chloride concentration in the solutions, leads to the same wide variety of sorption behavior observed in the methylene chloride vapor sorptions. The gas chromatographic (GC) analysis indicated that the presence of methylene chloride enhanced the n-heptane sorption in the polymer.

    Notes: Thermotropic liquid crystal polymers have been modeled as an array of highly ordered polyhedric nematic domains immersed in a less-ordered, nearly isotropic matrix. A function has been defined that expresses the elastic moduli of drawn fibers as a function of orientation and geometry of the nematic domains. When such a material is hot drawn in extension, the domains orient and elongate to produce an orthotropic fibrous phase. Equations are proposed to relate the elastic moduli of the fibers to the draw ratio and the extrusion conditions. Upon annealing of the hot drawn fibers, shrinkage occurs. It is proposed that the shrinkage is the result of a physical transformation from the fibrous state back to the nematic domain structure present before extrusion and drawing. The Avrami equation is used to describe the nucleation and growth processes controlling the shrinkage at constant annealing temperature. The model is shown to correlate experimental data on the elastic properties and the shrinkage of hot drawn PET/PHB60 liquid crystal polymer with the processing conditions.
