Abstract We describe a microcomputer-based system for carrying out acoustic stimulation tests to support the monitoring and diagnosis of the foetal state. The system has a programmable stimulus production unit, whose use is determined by an analysis of the foetal heart rate signal together with other events. The signal is sequentially analysed by means of four routines implemented as deterministic finite state automata. The automata’s states are defined by labels in natural language and their transitions are controlled by inputs selected by Boolean functions. The results of the test are given in a format suitable for medical interpretation, with the graphic presentation of signals and associated events as well as an evaluation of the state of foetal reactivity.
