Notes: The high-Tc superconductor LaBa2Cu3Oy has been prepared under various conditions, and characterized by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, and dc resistivity measurement. It has been found that samples with excellent superconducting characteristics and also with good structural properties are obtained in a reproducible way if the following three procedures are performed: preheat treatment of La2O3 powders, sintering in N2, and low-temperature annealing in dried O2. Long-time annealing in undried O2 was sometimes found to degrade the grain boundaries and to lead to a lower zero-resistance temperature.

Notes: Using a quasirealistic generalized continuum Takayama–Liu–Maki (TLM) model including acoustic phonon effects, perturbation theory is applied and a formal method for computing the kink of the TLM model with its perturbative corrections due to acoustic phonon interaction effects is presented. It is found that acoustic effects induce the motion of the soliton. The kink is then constrained to propagate along the molecular chain with a fixed velocity of magnitude close to that of the acoustic phonon velocity. No static solution is consistent with perturbation theory.

Notes: The Feynman rules for the Anderson model with a (2J+1)-component localized spin are formulated by means of a generalized Wick's expansion together with the reduction formulas in the thermo-field-dynamics. In the U→∞ limit, Feynman rules for arbitrary J correspond closely to those for the case J= 1/2 and may be obtained from them by a simple replacement rule.

Notes: We examine the sine–Gordon equation with a perturbation λΔV. We derive necessary conditions on ΔV such that the perturbed equation has solutions with finite energy, analytic in λ, and which reduce to the static soliton when the perturbation is removed (λ→0). Several examples illustrating these conditions are presented.

Notes: We report evidence which suggests surface ferromagnetism in a ferromagnetic superconductor arising from the competition between the Meissner current shielding effect and the fluctuations of the localized magnetic moments. We have measured the surface impedance penetration depth Λ of ErRh4B4 and Er0.5Ho0.5Rh4B4 by employing a spectrometer operated at 9 GHz. For ErRh4B4, owing to the critical spin fluctuations just above Ts (〉Tc2), the critical temperature at which surface ferromagnetism appears, Λ−1 decreases smoothly as temperature decreases toward Ts. For Er0.5Ho0.5Rh4B4, the decrease of Λ−1 arising from spin fluctuations for T〉Tc2 is very small, and Λ−1 decreases abruptly at Tc2. We will discuss the theory and show how the predicted values of Λ(T) compare well with the observed values.

Notes: Since their discovery in 1977 the rare earth ternary superconductors have provided a number of unusual phenomena regarding the interplay of magnetism and superconductivity. In the case of the reentrant superconductors ErRh4B4 and HoMo6S8 the importance of the electromagnetic interaction, in determining the physical properties of these materials, was realized shortly after their discovery. More recent single crystal data indicate that in addition to the electromagnetic interaction the d–f interaction, although weak, gives rise to a number of dramatic properties notably the appearance of a first order transition at the upper critical field Hc2. In this paper we outline a formalism which successfully incorporates both the electromagnetic interaction together with the d–f interaction in a mutually consistent manner. The results of our analysis based on this formalism are presented for the case of ErRh4B4 together with a comparison with the recent monocrystalline data.

Notes: Summary To investigate the possibility that delection en bloc in the HLA region had caused the combined deficiency of neuraminidase and 21-hydroxylase in a female patient, genetic markers on the short arm of chromosome 6 were examined in the patient and her parents, and 21-hydroxylase genes of the patient were analyzed by the Southern blot technique. The affected “extended haplotype” identical by descent might have been recombined at two sites, between HLA-A and C and between HLA-DQ and GLO. This suggests that the neuraminidase gene is mapped between HLA-A and GLO. Southern blot analysis revealed the existence of two 21-hydroxylase genes, so that we found no evidence to support the possibility that deletion en bloc in the HLA class III region had caused the combined deficiency of neuraminidase and 21-hydroxylase.

Notes: Abstract The framework for thermo field dynamics is presented in the axiomatic form. It consists of the conditions for the quantum algebra and the conditions for the vacuum. Choices of nonequilibrium vacuums correspond to nonequilibrium phenomena.

Notes: Abstract The refractivity of the CO2 gas is measured with an experimental error of 2% in the 10-μm region, using 10.4-μm band CO2 laser line. The frequency of the CO2 laser is swept through the Doppler profile of the laser line. The experiment is achieved using a 0.63-μm He−Ne/10.6-μm CO2-laser interferometer with a 2-m long vacuum cell. From the result, it is found that the Koch's formula also holds for the wavelengths in the 10-μm region within an accuracy of 2%.
