Notes: Summary It was found that some ciliates,Stentor, Spirostomum andBlepharisma, which can contract rapidly like the stalks of Vorticellidae, have Ca2+-binding proteins that are very similar to spasmins, in the immunological sense. The presence of spasmins in other Protozoa and in some Metazoa was also investigated.

Notes: Abstract The host-handling behavior of individual female waspsDiglyphys minoeus which attack the larvae of the honeysuckle leaf-miner,Phytomyza lonicerae, include 4 types of behavior: probing, ovipositor insertion, host-feeding, and resting. Ovipositor insertion may either be injection of venom, probing of the host by the sensilla on the ovipositor's tip or egg laying. Three types of attacks were distinguished: oviposition attack for unparasitized larvae, host-feeding attack for unparasitized host larvae and host rejection for previously parasitized host larvae. Oviposition attack was characterized by frequent alternation between probing and ovipositor insertion, long duration of ovipositor insertion and resting, and the long duration of host-handling. Resting behavior is thought to protect the progeny against superparasitism, host-feeding by other wasps or hosts' recovery from paralysis. Host-feeding attack was characterized by frequent alternation between host-feeding and ovipositor insertion and long duration of host-feeding. Host rejection was composed mainly of probing and ovipositor insertion and short handling time.

Notes: Summary In order to elucidate the mechanism of low fertility of Brassicoraphanus, i.e., amphidiploids between Brassica japonica Sieb. and Raphanus sativus L., the chromosome number of 253 plants was studied during the 3rd–9th generations for their seed fertility. Meiotic irregularity showed no connection with degree of sterility. Brassicoraphanus consisted of euploids (2n=38), hyperploids (2n=39–43) and hypoploids (2n=34–37) with white or yellow flowers. The number of plants was highest in euploids and became lower as the chromosome number diverged from the euploid number. Further, seed fertility was highest and the range of its variation widest in euploids. The seed fertility of aneuploids became lower and its variation narrower in proportion to the number of chromosomes additional to or missing from the euploid number. Yellow-flowered plants were superior in seed fertility to white-flowered plants. Seed fertility of plants is primarily affected by their chromosome numbers and secondarily modified by genic effects. As a whole, seed fertility of Brassicoraphanus increased gradually and its variation widened with the advance of generations. This was explained mainly by the increase of balanced combinations of genes.

Notes: Abstract The results of our experiments demonstrated that one hour of ischemia followed by one hour of reflow in the kidney caused a reduction in (Na+K+)ATPase activity and microsomal sulfhydryl content as well as an increase in microsomal lipid peroxidation. Renal venous malondialdehyde concentration was increased soon after reperfusion of the ischemic kidney. All these changes were rectified by an infusion of 0.123 mmol N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine/kg over a 70 min period. On the other hand, an in vitro addition of 0.01–0.5 mM N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine to a membrane preparation in the presence of H202 and Fe3+ did not prevent but rather potentiated the free radical effect on the enzyme activity. However, addition of superoxide dismutase alone or with catalase together with 2-MPG were effective in preventing the enzyme depression induced by H202. The results therefore indicate that free radical generation participates in the evolution of ischemia/reperfusion cell injury and thiol-reducing agents may be beneficial in alleviating the cell damage in vivo.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion behaviour of powder metallurgically produced chromiumPowder metallurgically produced chromium of purity 99.96 percent can be processed into semifinished and finished parts of up to now restricted sizes. It is highly resistant to certain hot solutions of salts, hot carbonic acids, oxidizing anorganic acids, bases and gases (hot gases especially in combination with ashes and slags). It is shown in which fields and for what kind of functional parts pure chromium eventually could be used.

Notes: Abstract The rate constant of radiation induced exchange reaction between thallium(I) and thallium(III) ions has been studied for elucidating the mechanisms which are responsible for (T1(II) intermediates or bridging groups (SO 4 2− ) in sulfuric acid and perchloric acid solutions. It was found that the radiation induced exchange reaction is accelerated by the sulfate ion, and the rate of the thallium(II)-thallium(I) reaction is faster than that of the thallium(II)-thallium(III) process in perchloric acid solution.

Notes: Summary In cells ofHeterosigma akashiwo cultured under a photoperiod of 12∶12 L∶D, one or several fatty particles have appeared, grew in size approximately the second hour of the dark period, diminished in size from the tenth hour of the dark period, and completely disappeared by the seventh hour of the light period. The particles, usually located on the side of the nucleus away from the flagellar bases, were partially surrounded by endoplasmic reticulum, but not bounded by a membrane. Lipids comprised 80% of the isolated particles fraction, proteins only 1%. Triacyl-glycerol occupied 80% of the acyllipids in the lipid fraction. Tetradecanoic, hexadecanoic, and hexadecenoic acids comprised 80% of the total fatty acids composition.
