Notes: Static dipole polarizability functions (α(parallel) and α⊥) and thermally averaged isotropic polarizabilities (α) of Li2, Na2, and K2 in their electronic ground states have been obtained from all-electron SCF+valence CI calculations which include core polarization effects by use of an effective potential. As a function of internuclear separation, α⊥ shows a monotonic increase in all three cases while α(parallel) exhibits a pronounced maximum at about 1.5 Re. For T=300 K, we find α(Li2)=214, α(Na2)=262, and α(K2)=477 a.u. Our results, to which we attribute an uncertainty of 2%, support the measured value for the average polarizability of Li2 [R. W. Molof et al., J. Chem. Phys. 61, 1816 (1974)] but disagree with their results for Na2 and K2. For these dimers, Molof 's mean experimental values appear to be in error by 33% and 18%, respectively.

Notes: The paper considers endospectral trees, a special class of graphs associated with the production of numerous isospectral graphs. Endospectral graphs have been considered in the literature sporadically (the name was suggested very recently [M. Randic, SIAM J. Algebraic Discrete Meth. 6, 145 (1985)]). They are characterized by the presence of a pair of special vertices that, if replaced by any fragment, produce an isospectral pair of graphs. Recently Jiang [Y. Jiang, Sci. Sin. 27, 236 (1984)] and Randic and Kleiner (M. Randic and A. F. Kleiner, "On the construction of endospectral trees,'' submitted to Ann. NY Acad. Sci.) considered alternative constructive approaches to endospectral trees and listed numerous such graphs. The listing of all such trees having n=16 or fewer vertices has been undertaken here. It has been found that relatively few endospectral trees have novel structural features and cannot be reduced to some already known endospectral tree. These few have been named "irreducible endospectral trees.'' They are responsible for the occurrence of a large number of isospectral trees, leading to, when one considers trees of increasing size, the situation that led Schwenk [A. J. Schwenk, in New Directions in the Theory of Graphs, edited by F. Harary (Academic, New York, 1973), pp. 275–307] to conclude that "almost all trees are isospectral.''

Notes: Abstract Transmission electron microscopic study of synthetic CaAl2Ge2O8-feldspar revealed two types of antiphase domains: type “b”-antiphase domains with the displacement vector 1/2 [110] and type “c”-antiphase domains with the displacement vector 1/2 [111]. The “b”-domains were on the order of 0.1 μm in size, while the “c”-domains displayed wall to wall distances mostly between 0.1 and 1 μm. The formation of the two types of antiphase domains is due to reductions in translational symmetry associated with the phase transitions $$C\bar 1 \to I\bar 1 \to P\bar 1$$ . The antiphase domain textures of CaAl2Ge2O8-feldspar are very similar to the textures found in natural and synthetic anorthite, CaAl2Si2O8.

    Notes: Abstract LetK be a cubic number field. Denote byA K (x) the number of ideals with ideal norm ≤x, and byQ K (x) the corresponding number of squarefree ideals. The following asymptotics are proved. For every ε〉0 ε〉0 $$\begin{gathered} {\text{ }}A_K (x) = c_1 x + O(x^{43/96 + \in } ), \hfill \\ Q_K (x) = c_2 x + O(x^{1/2} \exp {\text{ }}\{ - c(\log {\text{ }}x)^{3/5} (\log \log {\text{ }}x)^{ - 1/5} \} ). \hfill \\ \end{gathered}$$ Herec 1,c 2 andc are positive constants. Assuming the Riemann hypotheses for the Dedekind zeta function ζ K , the error term in the second result can be improved toO(x 53/116+ε).

    Notes: Abstract LetK be a quadratic number field with discriminantD and denote byF(n) the number of integral ideals with norm equal ton. Forr≥1 the following formula is proved $$\sum\limits_{n \leqslant x} {F(n)F(n + r) = M_K (r)x + E_K (x,r).} $$ HereM k (r) is an explicitly determined function ofr which depends onK, and for every ε〉0 the error term is bounded by $$|E_K (x,r)|〈〈 |D|^{{3 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {3 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2} + \varepsilon } x^{{5 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {5 6}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 6} + \varepsilon } $$ uniformly for $$r〈〈 |D|^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} x^{{5 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {5 6}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 6}} $$ Moreover,E k (x,r) is small on average, i.e $$\int_X^{2X} {|E_K (x,r)|^2 dx}〈〈 |D|^{4 + \varepsilon } X^{{5 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {5 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2} + \varepsilon } $$ uniformly for $$r〈〈 |D|X^{{3 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {3 4}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 4}} $$ .

Description / Table of Contents: Chemospecificity and Regioselectivity during Cycloaddition Reactions of Diazoalkanes with 1H-1,2-Diazepines1H-1,2-Diazepines 1 react in a chemospecific way, but only regioselectively, at the 4-double bond with diazoalkanes to form “direct” and “inverse” pyrazolinodiazepines (3,4,6-21). A dramatic rate increase is observed when going from diazomethane to diazoethane and to diazoisopropane, a result which agrees quite well with MNDO calculations. Considering the AO coefficients of the frontier MO's which come into interaction during these concerted cycloadditions, the cyclo-additions are unlikely to occur in a regiospecific manner; only a slight regioselectivity is predicted and found in most of the cases. 1-Benzoyldiazepines 1e and f proved to be the fastest reacting educts with no formation of the “inverse” adducts with 1e and only in poor yield with 1f. Diazepines bearing a 3-methyl group have a more pronounced boat-shaped conformation than their non-alkylated homologues. As a consequence, the regioselectivity of the 1,3-dipolar cyclo-additions is decreasing.
