    Notes: Abstract The role of the flow visualization in providing the necessary insight for the development of theoretical models of complex afterbody and base flows is described. Methods of calculating the turbulent base pressure for axisymmetric configurations are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the treatment of supersonic flows for cylindrical, boattail, and flare bodies as well as sharp and blunt cones and base flow nozzles. The guidance provided by flow visualization in the development of theoretical models for the transonic case is also discussed. The current interests in applying finite difference techniques to these-problems indicate that the extensive use of flow visualization data will continue.

    Notes: Abstract Human observers viewed dichoptic orthogonal sine-wave gratings and indicated when exclusive visibility occurred in either eye. Contrast was held constant in one eye and was increased or decreased in the other eye for a number of alternation cycles (continuous presentation) or for only the duration of a single period of exclusive visibility (synchronous presentation). The synchronous presentation condition allowed us to identify the differing effects of contrast during the suppressed and during the dominant periods. Mixed phases were recorded as distinct from suppressed and dominant phases, and new classifications of compound-dominant and compound-suppressed phases are defined. The results indicate that binocular rivalry responds to stimulus contrast in two ways.1) The duty-cycle of dominance and suppression is determined by the relative image contrast between the two eyes, with dominance of the higher contrast image being favored, and2) the overall rate of alternation is driven by monocular image contrast during the suppressed phase (increased monocular contrast increases the alternation rate) and to a lesser extent by monocular contrast during the dominant phase (increased monocular contrast decreases the rate). A model is developed to reflect these ideas. These results support a reciprocal inhibition oscillator as the underlying mechanism of binocular rivalry.

    Notes: Abstract Aqueous gels of carboxymethylcellulose in the free acid form (HCMC) are obtained when dialyzed sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC)-gels are treated with a strongly acidic ion exchanger. These gels age rheologically. During the aging process (maximum 60 days), thixotropy and increased viscoelasticity occur. The rheological changes are measured by shear viscosityη, coefficient of thixotropy H, complex dynamic shear modulus G*, shear storage modulusG′, shear loss modulusG″, and tangent of the phase angle. The aging process is caused by the formation of quasi-crystalline microaggregates of HCMC which can be detected by electron microscopy (Part II).

    Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation was conducted on the performance and boundary layer characteristics of the Wortmann FX 63-137 airfoil with and without trip wire roughness. Data were obtained through use of a three-component strain gage force balance and static pressure measurement equipment at a test Reynolds number of R c = 100,000. Emphasis was placed on determining the effect of trip wire placement and size on such performance parameters as (C l /C d )max and (C l 3/2 /C d )max. Prediction of transition location by the criterion due to Tani and Gibbings was found to have limited application. Most trip wire locations resulted in degraded performance, but for some locations, minimum drag was reduced, maximum lift to drag ratio increased, and hysteresis averted.

    Notes: Summary Phenotypes of orosomucoid (ORM) in human sera have been analysed by isoelectric focusing and print immunofixation. After neuraminidase treatment the band patterns indicated that the polymorphism of the structural locus ORM1 is controlled by three autosomal codominant alleles. According to the previous nomenclature they were called ORM1*F1, ORM1*F2, and ORM1*S. In a study of 272 unrelated individuals from southern Germany, five of the six expected common ORM1 subtypes were observed. Furthermore, we found three ORM variant phenotypes which have not been reported previously. These variants were characterized by additional bands in a cathodal position. One variant had additional double bands and presumably represents a rare ORM1 variant named ORM1S1. Two variants had additional single bands. They were assigned tentatively to the ORM2 gene locus. While the common gene product of ORM2 may be called ORM2A, the two variants are named ORM2B1 and ORM2B2, respectively. ORM2B1 has, thus far, been found only in a single individual; the variants ORM1S1 and ORM2B2 were found in a father-child pair and a mother-child pair, respectively. The frequency for variants tentatively assigned to the ORM2 locus is very low and was calculated to be 0.0037.

    Notes: Abstract The spatial structure of gels of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC-gel) and carboxymethyl cellulose in the free acid form can be imaged in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The freeze-fracturing technique is suitable for this. Experiments with test preparations (10 % aqueous glycerol solution) show that cooling rates during freeze-fixing are decisive for visualization, and that cooling rates can be improved substantially by using a cryojet. The increase of the cooling rate to more than 15 000 K/s makes it possible to obtain extremely fine network structures with a mesh width of 5–25 nm and with a filament thickness of 2–3 nm. The results obtained after jet-freezing show differences in the structure of the two gels: quasi-crystalline microaggregates in the HCMC-gel can be seen, and they cause an increased elasticity and opalescence of the aged HCMC-gels.

    Notes: Summary Azadirachtin A, an insect growth inhibitor derived from neem seed, when injected at a physiological dose, inhibits the hormonally controlled ovarian development inLocusta migratoria. Its tritiated dihydro derivative concentrates more in the corpus cardiacum than in the brain. Translocation and release of the neurosecretory proteins labeled with L-[35S]-cysteine in the corpus cardiacum is very poor in locusts under azadirachtin stress. It is concluded that azadirachtin may influence the release of trophic hormones from the corpus cardiacum leading to alterations in timing and titer of morphogenetic hormone pools.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L'action prédatrice exercée sur le puceron lanigère par le perceoreille commun, Forficula auricularia, et par d'autres prédateurs, a été comparée dans des parcelles d'un verger expérimental de pommiers adultes aux Pays-Bas. Ces parcelles étaient caractérisées par des densités fortes, intermédiaires, et basses en perce-oreilles. Les colonies de pucerons ont été découvertes et exterminées principalement par les perce-oreilles beaucoup plus rapidement dans les parcelles à forte et moyenne densité de perce-oreilles que dans celles à faible densité. Les pucerons lanigères ont colonisé 30 à 35% des nouvelles pousses lorsque les perce-oreilles étaient exclus par une barrière mécanique (Tanglefoot), alors que moins de 10% des pousses ont été infestées lorsque les perce-oreilles étaient relativement abondants. Plusieurs facterus ont probablement influencé le résultat des expériences de prédation, notamment la présence de proies alternatives (par exemple Aphis pomi), la phénologie du développement des perce-oreilles et le climat. Néanmoins, les perce-oreilles ont joué un rôle important en limitant les populations du puceron lanigère, et constituent potentiellement d'importants agents de contrôle naturel de ce ravageur.
    Notes: Abstract Woolly apply aphid predation by the common earwig, Forficula auricularia L., and other predators was compared in high, intermediate and low earwig density plots of mature apple trees at an experimental orchard in the Netherlands. Aphid colonies were discovered and exterminated primarily by earwigs much more rapidly in the high and intermediate earwig density plots than in the low density plots. Where earwigs were excluded from trees by Tanglefoot bands around the trunks, woolly apple aphids infested 30–35% of new growth shoots whereas less than 10% of the shoots were infested where earwigs were relatively abundant. Several factors including the availability of alternate prey (e.g. Aphis pomi De Geer), earwig developmental phenology and weather probably influenced the outcome of the predation experiments. Nevertheless earwigs play an important role in suppressing woolly apple aphid populations and are potentially important, naturally occurring biological control agents for this pest.
