Notes: Summary Twenty-four hypertensive patients have been studied. All had blood pressure recordings greater than 160/95 mmHg on 3 occasions whilst taking a beta blocker and two other antihypertensive agents in therapeutic doses. Compliance was checked by intermittent urine analysis for the relevant beta-blocker. These difficult to control hypertensives were treated with nadolol alone, nadolol plus indapamide and nadolol plus xipamide each for 2 months in random order. The aim was to reduce the blood pressure to below 160/95 mmHg. The supine blood pressure on nadolol alone (167/100 mmHg) was comparable to that on the previous three drug regimens (157/100 mmHg), the other two treatments were more effective (145/90 and 148/93 mmHg respectively). Hypokalaemia (serum potassium below 3.5 mmol/l) occurred in six individuals but occurred more frequently on xipamide than on indapamide.

Notes: An instrument for the measurement of heat flux from a surface with a nearly uniform temperature is described. This instrument contains a thin-film electrical resistance heater embedded in a copper cone which is thermally isolated from the surrounding walls. A differential thermocouple between the copper cone and the wall is nulled such that the electrical power becomes a direct measure of the surface heat flux. The advantage of this design over earlier sensors is its modular characteristic and its ability to be flush mounted in an external surface or mounted in the wall of a duct. It has been used to measure the local time-average heat transfer coefficient inside a circular duct. The time constant in this application was 43 s. For these measurements an uncertainty analysis is presented which shows that this instrument has an uncertainty of ±3.6% for a convective heat flux of 342 W/sq m. The major source of uncertainty was the surface area.

Notes: An analysis is presented of the characteristics of a magnetometer which uses an amorphous-metal ribbon as its primary sensing element and which operates by modulating the magnetostrictive strain. Magnetic fields at the second harmonic of the modulation frequency are identified as capable of significantly degrading the magnetometer performance. A second-harmonic field is measured and its contribution to the noise is estimated.

Notes: Summary The populations and production of the macroinvertebrates of a Spartina anglica salt-marsh in eastern England were studied over two years. A total of fifteen species were recorded in the sediments, of which twelve species were of regular occurrence, and the total population density recorded ranged from 3,481 m-2 to 11,444m-2 over the twenty-four sampling occasions. The four most abundant species were Nereis diversicolor, Tubifex costatus, Corophium volutator and Hydrobia ulvae. Thirteen further taxa were associated with the canopy of Spartina, with a total population density ranging from 0 to 1,149 m-2. Total monthly standing crop ranged from 1.8 to 8.5 g C m-2 with peaks in July/August in both years. Nereis diversicolor contributed 55% to 86% of total biomass in each month. Production and respiration for each species was determined and annual assimilation calculated. The total annual production was ∼16 g C m-2 a-1 in both 1979 and 1980, with a corresponding assimilation of ∼60 g C m-2 a-1 Nereis diversicolar accounted for 〉80% of production and assimilation in both years, and the species is clearly of considerable potential importance in the dissipation of Spartina material. The canopy dwelling species accounted for about 1% of the total annual production and assimilation.

Notes: Abstract Certain basic radiation properties of microstrip dipoles on electrically thick substrates are investigated, and a comparison is made with the case of dipoles printed on a dielectric half-space. It is concluded that the microstrip dipole radiation properties become sensitive to substrate loss as the substrate thickness increases, with the half-space properties obtained for an adequate amount of loss. Asymptotic formulas for radiated power and efficiency are given for both the thick substrate and half-space problems, showing the behavior with increasing dielectric constant. The method of moments is used to extend the analysis to center-fed strip dipoles, and a method of improving both the efficiency and gain of a printed antenna by using a superstrate layer is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Five cuticular chemical components isolated from the green leaves of tobacco introductions (TIs) and a commercial tobacco cultivar were tested for their effects on tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens (F), oviposition in cage bioassays, and field experiments. These chemicals were sprayed onto budworm-resistant TI 1112 tobacco which produces low levels of most cuticular components. Individual duvane diterpenes (α- and β-4,8,13-duvatrien-1-ols and α- and β-4,8,13-duvatriene-1,3-diols) increased tobacco budworm egg laying on sprayed TI 1112 plants.cis-Abienol, docosanol, and docosanyl myristate were inactive.
