Description:
A humped airfoil concept to improve the perfomance of supercritical airfoils at off-design conditions in transonic maneuver is introduced. Theoretical aspects of the airfoil and recent results of experimental tests conducted in the high Reynolds number transonic wind tunnels at both NASA Ames Research Center and The Ohio State University are presented. Experimental evidence has shown that the humped airfoil generally has more favorable transonic characteristics in off-design high supercritical flow conditions than a regular supercritical airfoil.
