Notes: Taking into account configuration interaction between 4f2 and 4f15d1 via the odd rank crystal field parameters eliminates most of the well-known discrepancy of the 1D2 multiplet of trivalent praseodymium in PrCl3, found when "standard'' crystal field treatment is applied to experimental data. Ab initio values of crystal field parameters agree with the new parameters including the configuration interaction.

Notes: A previous paper gave the results of a full calculation involving free ion and crystal–field interaction within the 4 f2 and 4 f15d1 configurations. Presently, the calculation is extended to 4 f16s1 and 4 f16p1 as well. As a result, the usual experimental/calculated discrepancy of the 1D2 multiplet is completely eliminated. A complete Hamiltonian, including the magnetic contribution, is utilized to reproduce the Zeeman effect in PrCl3.

Notes: A limited LCAO model was applied to a series of 12 rare earth or rare earth doped compounds and one actinide compound, namely, LiYF4:Nd3+, KY3F10:Eu3+, YOCl:Eu3+, BaFCl:Sm2+, SrFCl:Sm2+, Nd2O3, Nd2O2S, NdAlO3, LaAlO3:Eu3+, LaCl3:Nd3+, YF3:Gd3+, Y2O3:Eu3+, and CsUF6. The procedure and the approximations are detailed. The overlap integrals are calculated and fitted to analytical functions of the distance for nine rare earth–ligand pairs: Nd3+, Eu3+, Tm3+/O2−, F−, and Cl− utilizing literature radial wave functions. For each species, the ionization energies are assigned mean values. The one-electron energies given by the diagonalization of the interaction matrix are transformed into sets of Bkq crystal field parameters. The comparison with literature phenomenological values is made in terms of scale and reliability factors. In most cases the results are satisfactory.

Notes: A simple criterion for colliding gravitational plane waves is developed. This colliding wave condition is preserved by a new realization of the Geroch group augmented by a Kramer–Neugebauer involution. A three-parameter generalization of a two-parameter family of solutions with noncollinear polarization discovered recently by Ferrari, Ibañez, and Bruni is presented, and two additional solutions are derived that demonstrate that much larger families are likely to be constructed in the near future.

Notes: An Ehlers transformation on the Ernst potential for the Nutku–Halil solution [Phys. Rev. Lett. 39, 1379 (1977)] provides a new solution of the Einstein field equations describing colliding gravitational plane waves with noncollinear polarization, the first of an infinite sequence of solutions that can be generated using techniques described in this paper.

Notes: Within nonlinear electrodynamics of Born–Infeld type allowing for the freedom of duality rotations, explicit type D solutions are constructed. The obtained type D solutions, which generalize the charged Taub–NUT (Newman–Unti–Tamburino) metric with λ, exhaust all solutions within the considered class, under the assumption that the real eigenvectors of the electromagnetic field are aligned along the geodesic and shear-free principal null directions. Various relevant limiting transitions, in particular those of the flat space-time, are studied in some detail.

Notes: The Hauser–Ernst homogeneous Hilbert problem (HHP) approach, formerly used in connection with the derivation of stationary axisymmetric fields, is here adapted to the derivation of colliding gravitational plane wave solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations. Proceeding from Kasner metrics, and using a double-Harrison transformation, the HHP approach yields a three-parameter generalization of a two-parameter family of colliding wave solutions found recently by Ferrari, Ibañez, and Bruni. In the present paper we provide the details concerning the derivation of this new family of solutions, and we set the stage for future applications of the HHP approach in connection with gravitational waves.

Notes: It is shown that the class of solutions S¯(a,0,−1/1), a real slice of the "complexified'' Plebanski S(a,b,c/m) metrics, is interpretable as colliding wave solutions and, for a=−s2, coincides precisely with the Ferrari–Ibañez colliding wave metrics.

Notes: Within the type-D Carter metric structure with a perfect fluid source, it is established that the Wahlquist metric and a new divergenceless solution are the only perfect fluid solutions satisfying positive energy and regularity conditions. The divergenceless solution, obtainable also as a limiting transition of the Wahlquist one, is endowed with three arbitrary parameters, and contains the Kramer fluid solution as a particular case. The fluid four-velocity of these metrics does not lie in the two-space spanned by the double principal null directions of the Weyl tensor.
