    Notes: Abstract Quantum theoretical models of chemical bond formation and partial charge transfer processes in condensed systems, and their extension to processes in electronic non-equilibrium are investigated in this paper with a view to further exploration of electrochemical and photoelectrochemical kinetics on semiconductors. Electrochemical dark and photocurrents on n-III-V-semiconductors are correlated with calculated transition probabilities for atom-group transfer over larger distances (80 to 240 pm), leading to a first estimate of potential surface shapes compatible with experiment. Some specific problems connected with transition probability calculations for heavy-particle transfer in strong anharmonic potentials are considered in detail, including approximation of Franck-Condon transitions in arbitrary potentials by their classical limit.

    Notes: Abstract Photomixotrophic callus and suspension cultures of salsh pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm.) have been established. Callus tissues contained up to 2.76 μg chlorophyll mg-1 dry wt and suspensions 2.98 μg chlorophyll mg-1 dry wt. Maximum photosynthetic oxygen evolution was 25–32 μmol O2 h-1 mg-1 chlorophyll for callus and 35–39 μmol O2h-1 mg-1 chlorophyll for suspension, respectively. Photomixotrophic callus was friable with a high moisture content during early and exponential growth, but evolved into a compact and dense tissue during the latter stage of growth. Compact photomixotrophic callus accumulated and deposited secondary metabolites in the central vacuole and developed large starch granules in the chloroplasts. Secondary metabolites were not observed in photomixotrophic suspensions or in heterotrophic calli and suspensions. Photomixotrophic callus contained numerous mitochondria closely associated with well-developed chloroplasts containing 2–6 thylakoids per granum. Heterotrophic callus was characterized by a poorly developed cytoplasm and cup-shaped mitochondria.

    Notes: Photomixotrophic suspensions of Glycine max (soybean) and Pinus elliottii (slash pine) have been successfully cultured in a hybrid stirred tank photobioreactor using a novel cell-lift impeller. A cell-lift impeller exhibited cell viabilities over 90% and an average cell aggregate size of 1.0 mm or less. Flat-bladed turbines produced equivalent biomass to the cell-lift impeller, but cell viability was reduced (85%) and cell aggregate size increased (3-5 mm diameter). Maximum fresh weights of 82 g L-1 (soybean) and 52 g L-1 (slash pine) were achieved in 15 days using continuous lighting (90-100 μE m-2 s-1) and supplemental 2% CO2 inlet gas. Maximum biomass was achieved using an impeller speed of 60 rpm with air-flow rate of 0.2 vvm for the cell-lift impeller and the pair of flat bladed turbines. The lag and early exponential phases were characterized by (1) rapid hydrolysis of sucrose followed by preferential use of glucose and (2) a reduction in chlorophyll levels. Carbon dioxide (2%-5%) was an essential nutrient for photomixotrophic cell culture in the bioreactors.
