Summary In the study of mesophase pitch-based carbon fibres and graphite powders, the application of previously recommended methods to study solid surface polarity by inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution has failed. A new method based on the possibility of distinguishing the specific interaction component from the measurable total interactions by theoretical analysis of the dispersive interactions expressed as a function of molar deformation polarisation of molecules has therefore been developed.
