Notes: Abstract A mixed convection parameterζ=(σRa) 1/4/(ωRe)1/2, withσ=Pr/(1+Pr) andω=Pr/(1 +Pr)1/2, is proposed to replace the conventional Richardson number, Gr/Re2, for combined forced and free convection flow on an isothermal vertical plate. This parameter can readily be reduced to the controlling parameters for the relative importance of the forced and the free convection,Ra 1/4/(Re 1/2 Pr 1/3) forPr ≫ 1, and (RaPr)1/2/(RePr 1/2 forPr ≪ 1. Furthermore, new coordinates and dependent variables are properly defined in terms ofζ, so that the transformed nonsimilar boundary-layer equations give numerical solutions that are uniformly valid over the entire range of mixed convection intensity from forced convection limit to free convection limit for fluids of any Prandtl number from 0.001 to 10,000. The effects of mixed convection intensity and the Prandtl number on the velocity profiles, the temperature profiles, the wall friction, and the heat transfer rate are illustrated for both cases of buoyancy assisting and opposing flow conditions.

Notes: Abstract Laminar mixed convection over a horizontal plate with uniform wall temperature or uniform wall heat flux is analyzed by introducing proper buoyancy parameters and transformation variables for fluids of any Prandtl number between 0.001 and 10,000. Both cases of buoyancy assisting and opposing flow conditions are investigated. For the buoyancy-assisting case, the obtained numerical results are very accurate over the entire range of mixed convection intensity from pure forced convection limit to pure free convection limit. For the buoyancy-opposing case, solutions are obtained from the forced convection limit to the point of breakdown.

Notes: Abstract Adventitious buds or protocorm-like bodies were regenerated directly from excised explants without intervening callus. Differences in the ability of regeneration were observed among different plant organs with bulbils showing the highest regenerative ability followed by leaf blade and petiole. Ability of vegetative propagation of bulbil could be maintained by alternate solid-and liquid-medium culture. Theoretically, 1.7×1027 plantlets could be produced from a single bulbil by this technique within one year based on the production and rapid growth of protocorm-like bodies and adventitious buds. Concentration of MS salts, NAA and sucrose influenced not only root formation from the differentiated adventitious buds, but also root number and length. For root formation, the best combination was one-half strength MS salts with 3–5% sucrose and 1 mg/l NAA. The high survival rate of 96% was recorded when plantlets were transplanted into a mixture of vermiculite:loam soil:peat moss (1:2:1). Plants from in vitro culture were morphological similar to field-grown plants. The acute toxicity of crude extracts from protocorm-like bodies was about one-fourth that of extracts from tubers of field-grown plants when tested with white mice. Tissue culture has potential for clonal propagation of Pinellia ternata plants for commercial use.

Notes: Summary Streptomycin-resistant colonies were isolated from protoplast cultures of haploid Nicotiana plumbaginifolia based on their ability to green in medium containing 1 mg/ml streptomycin sulfate. The frequency of resistant colonies was 0.9×10−5 in nonmutagenized culture, and increased ten-fold following treatment of culture with 10 μg/ml N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. Of a total of 52 resistant clones isolated, 2 gave rise to haploid, 15 to diploid, and 3 to tetraploid plants upon transfer of calli to differentiation medium. Leaf-segment and protoplast assays showed that all diploid regenerates were resistant to streptomycin but sensitive to chloramphenicol, kanamycin, lincomycin, neomycin, and spectinomycin. Plants in most diploid clones were fertile and able to set seeds when self-fertilized and crossed reciprocally to wild-type plants. Inheritance of streptomycin resistance was studied in the diploid clones and, without exception, the resistance was transmitted maternally. Comparative studies of the ultrastructure of organelles and protein synthesis in isolated chloroplasts between wild-type and resistant clones in the presence of streptomycin suggest that streptomycin resistance is controlled by chloroplasts.

    Notes: Abstract For eachr-regular graphG, define a binary sequenceθ(G) = (θ 1,θ 2,...,θ r-1) byθ k = 0 ifG has ak-factor, andθ k = 1 otherwise. A binary sequenceε = (ε i |i = 1, 2,...,r − 1) is said to be realizable if there exists anr-regular graphG such thatθ(G) = ε. In this paper we characterize all binary sequences which are realizable.

Notes: A new route to prepare optically active polyamides was established, based on the polycondensation of two new active diesters: the active diesters of 4-chloro-1 hydroxybenzotriazole, such as 1,1'-(terephthaloyldioxy)bis(4-chloro-benzotriazole), and 1,1'-(isophthaloyldioxy)bis(4-chlorobenzotriazole), with optically active isomers of 2,4-diaminopentane. Dipolar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide were used as reaction solvents. The solution polycondensation carried out in solution at room temperature afforded optically active polyamides. The aminolysis of the two active diesters was carried out as a model reaction study.

Notes: Polynucleotide analogs with a polyethylenimine backbone and optically active thymine- and adenine-containing pendants and their model compounds were synthesized. The pendants were prepared by the addition reaction of the nucleic acid base to ethyl crotonate. The ammonium salt of 3-(adenin-9-yl)butyric acid was employed to replace its free acid for the formation of diastereomeric salt with brucine. Fractional crystallization of the diastereomeric salt generates the partially resolved enantiomers. The solubility difference between the racemic mixture and its enantiomer was utilized to obtain the pure enantiomers. The active esters of the pendants were prepared. Grafting reactions were carried out by the reaction of active esters with PEI at room temperature. Completely grafted polymers were obtained.

Notes: Polynucleotide analogs consisting of poly(vinylamine) as the backbone and optically active thymine and adenine derivatives as the pendants were synthesized. The pendants were prepared by the addition reaction of the nucleic acid base to ethyl crotonate followed by hydrolysis. The pendants were resolved using brucine as the resolving agent and an acetone-water mixture as the fractional crystallization solvent. The active esters of the pendants also were prepared. Poly(vinylamine) was isolated from water employing a weak acid, N-hydroxysuccinimide (HOSu), to protect the amino group of the poly(vinylamine). Model reactions for grafting were examined. Grafting reactions were carried out by reacting the active esters with the PVAm.6HOSu complex at room temperature.
