    Notes: The one-dimensional magnetotelluric (MT) inversion problem is well known to be ill posed and nonlinear. This paper seeks an understanding of the mappings underlying the nonlinear relationships. These properties are used to study the validity of some exploration aspects of the problem that are essential for the practical use of MT as an exploration tool. This study has two major segments—results in response space and results in geologic space. In response space, the existence of optimal admittance curves has been proven. In the case of continuous data, uniqueness has been established. For discrete data, a relationship between alternative optimal solutions has been derived. In geologic space, the results are extremely significant to MT's applicability to exploration. A class of conductivity functions Y, which contains all possible natural geological conditions, has been used as a framework for the study. Over this class Y, the one-dimensional magnetotellurics problem has been proven to be uniquely invertible from the admittance curves. This precludes the possibility of two different geologic models yielding the same complete data. As a result, the path is now clear to generate a description of a unimodal statistical distribution of feasible inversions to the real-world exploration problem with finitely sampled noisy data.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The present paper is an attempt to demonstrate the fact that misleading information about the thermodynamic structure of shallow cumulus fields is obtained when standard isobaric level (SIL) data input is used. The 1-D cumulus model serves as the main tool of examination and the reference input data are those of significant levels (SL) in soundings. The computed cloud tops (SIL) exceeded (SL) tops in nearly 80% of the cases and the excesses are more than 1 kilometre in 25% of the cases. Some discrepancies were also found in potential stability analysis. The local changes in equivalent potential temperature may be seriously affected and even falsified. The important role of high resolution in studies of mesoscale phenomena was again accentuated.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the present paper the first results of the international “KOPEX-86“ experiment are presented. The experiment took place at the Kopisty Atmospheric Observatory of the Institute of Physics of the Atmosphere in Prague as part of a special project of the Commission of the Academy of Sciences in Planetary Geophysics (KAPG) in June and July 1986. Using 4 ultrasonic anemometers at 4 levels up to 80 m, Doppler-SODAR and wind-, temperature- and radiation balance gradients from 2 to 80 m, a complex investigation of the atmospheric boundary layer in an industrial area was made. The authors present the first results of the anthropogenic influence on the energy exchange in the atmospheric boundary layer. the influence of a complex terrain on the turbulent characteristics and their vertical distribution.

The levels at which the entrained air might originate were determined.     Description / Table of Contents: Summary Proof is presented that extraterrestrial interactions may function as triggering mechanisms in the process of redistribution of much larger amounts of energy, accumulated in the whole geosystem, in the polar regions. However, it is shown that the effect of the extraterrestrial interactions need not always be the same. In some geographic regions they may generate cyclogenetic changes, in others anticyclogenetic changes. The interdisciplinary nature of the studied problem and the necessity of close cooperation of all interdisciplinary sciences is emphasized.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The case study presented here is related to the thermodynamic analysis of entrainment and mixing in a shallow cumuls layer. The fair weather situation on 9. 9. 1983, Voves, is characterized by a field of scattered cumuli of the same depths and by a towering isolated cumulus. The clouds were sampled. Two types of analysis were used, the Paluch analysis and saturation point analysis, both of them making use of conserved parameters and a mixing line structure. Both methods gave similar results. For the small cumuli, lateral entrainment prevailed up to the highest penetration level while in the isolated cumulus, cloud top entrainment was the dominant mixing mechanism.
