Description: When platelets were incubated with prostacyclin, prostaglandin E1, or prostaglandin D2 at concentrations insufficient to increase the level of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP), coagulation factor X was activated by a platelet cysteine protease. Prostacyclin or prostaglandin E1 at higher concentrations increased the cyclic AMP level and inhibited the activation of factor X by platelets. Inhibition of platelet adenylate cyclase by 2',5'-dideoxyadenosine allowed the activation of the protease at higher concentrations of the autocoids. Prostaglandins A1, A2, B1, B2, E2, F2 alpha, 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha, and thromboxane B2, which do not affect platelet cyclic AMP level, did not stimulate the protease.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Dutta-Roy, A K -- Ray, T K -- Sinha, A K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1986 Jan 24;231(4736):385-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3001935" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: A local spectral sum rule for nonrelativistic scattering in two dimensions is derived for the potential class v∈L4/3 (R2). The sum rule relates the integral over all scattering energies of the trace of the time-delay operator for a finite region Σ⊆R2 to the contributions in Σ of the pure point and singularly continuous spectra.

Notes: Abstract The effect of hypoxia on circulatory levels of insulin, its response to oral glucose administration (100 g) and changes in circadian rhythms of glucose as well as insulin were evaluated in euglycemic males at sea level (SL, 220 m) during their stay at high altitude (3500 m, SJ) and in high altitude natives (HAN). Basal glucose levels were not altered at high altitude but the rise in glucose (δ glucose) after glucose load was significantly higher in SJ and HAN (p〈0.01) as compared to SL values. An increase (p〈0.01) both in basal as well as glucose induced rise in insulin secretion (δ insulin) was observed at HA. The rise in insulin in SJ was significantly higher (p〈0.01) than in HAN. This elevation in glucose and insulin levels was also evident at different times of the day. The circadian rhythmicity of glucose as well as insulin was altered by the altitude stress. The findings of the study show a rise in insulin level at HA but the hyperglycemia in the face of hyper-insulinism require the presumption of a simultaneous and dispropotionate rise of insulin antagonistic hormones upsetting the effect of insulin on glucose metabolism.

Notes: Abstract Studies were conducted on 29 male healthy subjects having no previous experience of living at high altitude. These subjects were divided into three groups, i.e., subjects treated with placebo, acetazolamide and spironolactone. These subjects were first studied in Delhi. The drug schedule was started 24 hour prior to the airlift of these subjects to an altitude of 3,500 m and was continued for 48 hour after arrival at high altitude. Total body water, extra cellular water, plasma volume, blood electrolytes, pH, pO2, pCO2 and blood viscosity were determined on 3rd and 12th day of their stay at high altitude. Total body water, extra cellular water intracellular water and plasma volume decreased on high altitude exposure. There was a further slight decrease in these compartments with acetazolamide and spironolactone. It was also observed that spironolactone drives out more water from the extracellular compartment. Loss of plasma water was also confirmed by increased plasma osmolality. Increase in arterial blood pH was noticed on hypoxic exposure but the increase was found less in acetazolamide and spironolactone cases. This decrease in pH is expected to result in better oxygen delivery to the tissues at the low oxygen tension. It was also confirmed because blood pO2 increased in both the groups. No significant change in plasma electrolytes was observed in subjects of various groups. Blood viscosity slightly increased on exposure to high altitude. The degree of rise was found less in the group treated with spironolactone. This study suggests that both the drugs are likely to be beneficial in ameliorating/prevention of AMS syndrome.

Notes: Abstract In the framework of Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory, the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory is considered and it is found that a scalar field nonminimally coupled to the gravitational field gives rise to torsion, even though the scalar field has zero spin. The metric equations stay the same if the coupling constant is rescaled, but the equations of motion of a test particle, derived from the conservation equations, differ from those of the usual BD theory without torsion. The gravitational red-shift value differs considerably from the usual prediction of general theory of relativity (GTR), and rules out the possibility of a torsion version of BD theory forω〈6.

Notes: Abstract In the framework of the ECSK [Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble] theory of cosmology, a scalar field nonminimally coupled to the gravitational field is considered. For a Robertson-Walker open universe (k=0) in the radiation era, the field equations admit a singularity-free solution for the scale factor. In theory, the torsion is generated through nonminimal coupling of a scalar field to the gravitation field. The nonsingular nature of the cosmological model automatically solves the flatness problem. Further absence of event horizon and particle horizon explains the high degree of isotropy, especially of 2.7-K background radiation.

Notes: Abstract Equivalent width calculations for some electronic and vibration-rotation transitions of the molecules PO, PH, MgH+f, and CN have been carried out for a few umbral, photospheric, and facular model atmospheres. It appears that a few weak lines of these molecules might show up in the umbral spectrum. Le Blanc bands of CN are too weak for detection in the solar spectrum.

Notes: Abstract Post-perihelion observed emission fluxes at 388 nm (CN) and 516 nm (C2) of the coma of comets Austin (1982g) and Bradfield (1980t) are analysed in the framework of the Haser model. Ratios of Haser model CN and C2 parent production rates with expansion velocity show that each comet behaves normally. For comet Austin (1982g), the Q CN/v and Q c2/v values decrease with increase of heliocentric distance of comet. For an assumed %; activity of the total spherical surface area of the nucleus, the water vaporization theory coupled with derived water production rates from the International Ultraviolet Explorer H and OH flux data yields a nuclear diameter of about 6 km for comet Austin (1982g). For comet Bradfield (1980t), the derived nuclear diameter is expected to be of about 1 km. In each comet, the dust mass production rates as well as ratio of dust-to-gas mass production rates decrease with increase of heliocentric distance of comet.

Notes: Abstract We have constructed an electronic simulator of a simple bistable system driven by noise, whose intensity is determined by the instantaneous value of the coordinate. We observe that the most probable state of the system can be reversed by altering the noise intensity only in the neighborhood of the barrier, an effect pointed out by Landauer many years ago in the context of discussions on entropy-related stability criteria for nonequilibrium systems. We compare detailed measurements on the system with the recent white noise calculations of Landauer and van Kampen. The system also has interesting possibilities for tests of contemporary colored noise theory which we illustrate with an example.
