    Description: The 5S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) sequences were determined for Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Bacteroides capillosus, Bacteroides veroralis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Anaerorhabdus furcosus, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Fusobacterium mortiferum, and Fusobacterium varium. A dendrogram constructed by a clustering algorithm from these sequences, which were aligned with all other hitherto known eubacterial 5S rRNA sequences, showed differences as well as similarities with respect to results derived from 16S rRNA analyses. In the 5S rRNA dendrogram, Bacteroides clustered together with Cytophaga and Fusobacterium, as in 16S rRNA analyses. Intraphylum relationships deduced from 5S rRNAs suggested that Bacteroides is specifically related to Cytophaga rather than to Fusobacterium, as was suggested by 16S rRNA analyses. Previous taxonomic considerations concerning the genus Bacteroides, based on biochemical and physiological data, were confirmed by the 5S rRNA sequence analysis.

    Description: Proton-proton small angle correlations have been measured in neon-nucleus collisions, using the 4 pi detector Diogene, at 400 and 800 MeV per nucleon incident energies. Values of the size of the emitting region are obtained by comparison with the Koonin formula, taking into account the biases of the apparatus. The dependence of the density on target mass and incident energy is also analysed.

    Description: Observations and numerical simulations of the evolution of upswelling and the resultant coastal circulation in response to two wind events occurring along the Galician coast of Spain during the April 18-26, 1982 period are presented. In situ measurements include shipboard determinations of hydrographic and biological parameters, and wind stress estimates obtained from the ship winds and from surface pressure charts. Sea surface temperature information was derived from NOAA 7 satellite images, and pigment concentration information was acquired from the Nimbus 7 coastal zone color scanner. The indication from the simulations that the greatest upswelling will occur either at Cape Finisterre or along the northern coast was confirmed by observations, and it is suggested that wave disturbances propagate northward along the coast at a speed of 120-160 km/day, and that organic material formed north of Cape Finisterre is advected out to sea northwest of the cape.

    Description: Some unexpected properties of Gaussian beams when they are used with afocal lens pairs are presented. It is shown that the output confocal parameter is simply equal to the input confocal parameter multiplied by the square of the magnification of the afocal lens pair. It is not a function of the location of the input beam waist. Applications of these analytical results are discussed in a general way, and one particular application is discussed in detail.

    Description: Measurements have been made of stratospheric N2O using the Stony Brook millimeter-wave remote sensing spectrometer at McMurdo Station, and NO2 mixing ratios are found that are less than 1.5 at 20 km and less than 1.10 at 25 km compared to values measured during the Antarctic summer. The observed mixing ratios are also much less than those predicted by global-scale models of stratospheric chemistry and dynamics. As the NO2 signal remained very weak when McMurdo was at the edges of the ozone hole and showed no signs of recovering during October, it is concluded that the geographical and temporal extent of the region of low NO2 is comparable to or greater than that of the ozone hole. These results argue against theories that require springtime upwelling to explain the Antarctic ozone hole. It is suggested that the air in the Antarctic lower stratosphere during late winter and early spring has been subjected to considerable downward transport.

    Description: High-resolution ultraviolet spectra of the moderate supergiant Alpha Per (F5 Ib) were studied to determine the dynamic state of its upper photosphere. It was found that the line-of-sight microturbulent velocity component in the region of origin of the UV spectrum is about 5 km/s, and is slightly smaller than the value derived from the visual spectrum. This is ascribed to dissipation of mechanical energy between the higher and lower layers where, respectively, the ultraviolet and visual light lines originate. Between these two levels, which are one scale height apart, the mechanical energy flux decreases to about 0.3 of its photospheric value. The consequent value for the (outward directed) turbulent acceleration is 24 cm/sec-squared, more than one half the observationally determined effective acceleration of gravity.

    Description: Observations of CO and H I revealed that in Ursa Major the high-latitude far-infrared 'cirrus' emission discovered by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite comes from molecular and atomic clouds. These clouds differ sufficiently from the large clouds in the Galactic plane so that the ratio of H2 column density to velocity-integrated CO radiation temperature, N(H2)/W(CO), derived from Galactic plane surveys, may not apply to them. On the assumption of a constant gas-to-dust ratio, it is argued that the cirrus emission in Ursa Major is a good mass tracer, since both the atomic and the molecular gas are probably optically thin at visual wavelengths, and the grains are heated not by local sources but by the background field of Galactic starlight. The N(H2)/W(CO) ratio thus derived for those diffuse clouds, is significantly lower than the ratio applicable to Galactic plane surveys.
