    Description: Some preliminary velocity measurements were carried out inside the transonic tunnel using the laser velocimeter (LV) system in association with the smoke generator. Pressure measurements were also performed using a pressure tap located on the side wall of the test section slightly upstream of the windows. Though the pressure measurements and the LV measurements were not taken at exactly the same location, extrapolation of the pressure data into the location of the LV measurements indicated a very close agreement between the velocity values obtained using the two different methods. Thus it is believed that the smoke particle is following the air flow with little or no velocity slip. Velocity measurements with airfoil at various angles of attack are now being carried out in conjuction with schlieren flow visualization. In the near future pressure distribution around and on the airfoil will be obtained by putting pressure taps on the side windows and using a pressure tap model (currently under construction) of the airfoil.

    Description: A fluid sampler for collecting a plurality of discrete samples over separate time intervals is described. The sampler comprises a sample assembly having an inlet and a plurality of discreet sample tubes each of which has inlet and outlet sides. A multiport dual acting valve is provided in the sampler in order to sequentially pass air from the sample inlet into the selected sample tubes. The sample tubes extend longitudinally of the housing and are located about the outer periphery thereof so that upon removal of an enclosure cover, they are readily accessible for operation of the sampler in an analysis mode.

    Description: A description is given of an electronics system based on the DEC Falcon SBC-11/23+, which has been designed and built to support a balloon-borne double Compton gamma-ray telescope. The system provides support for commands, data acquisition, data routing and compression, and photomultiplier tube gain control. The software consists of a number of interrupt-driven routines of differing priorities to handle each system task. This includes two circular buffers for onboard processing and bit encoding before transmission of the information to the ground computer. Acquisition of gamma-ray events at rates above the 200-Hz telemetry constraint is easily achieved.

    Description: A new gas-correlation spectroscopy technique is described which uses electrooptic phase modulation (EOPM) of atmospheric emission spectra together with a reference cell to selectively detect radiatively active gases. Laboratory results demonstrate that the EOPM gas-correlation technique is a sensitive approach to species abundance measurements, and support the feasibility of an instrument for measurement of winds in the stratosphere and mesosphere using an EOPM. Through the measurement of wind-induced Doppler shifts in the spectra of atmospheric species, this instrument offers a means of monitoring the wind field in the 20-100 km altitude range from a satellite.

    Description: The Standards and Calibration Office maintains visible and near infrared calibration sources for the use of various GSFC organizations instrument calibration needs and related field activities. These are large aperture spherical and hemispherical integrating sources designed to provide a spatially uniform absolute spectral radiance with a well-defined angular uniformity characteristic. In essence, the calibration and characterization efforts involve monitoring and documenting the stability and the absolute radiance of these calibration sources. These sources are recalibrated on a regular basis to both document any changes that might occur in the output of the sources and to provide the most up-to-date calibration data for the source users. Efforts included comparing the calibration numbers with those of a commercial calibration laboratory that was engaged to do independent calibrations. However, the most recent calibrations done by the independent laboratory and those done by GSFC personnel show a rather large discrepancy (10 to 15 percent). Efforts are underway to resolve these differences.

    Description: A materials interaction experiment has been approved to study atomic oxygen interaction mechanisms and develop coatings for Space Station elements requiring long-lived operation in the LEO environment.     Description: This background information relates to the conclusions reached about the GSFC/Optronic calibrations for the 6-foot sphere. Both the hemispherical and the spherical integrating sources were remeasured in February 1988 by two experimenters and the results show a decrease in the output of the sphere. But the discrepancy between GSFC data and Optronic Data remains. The decrease in the output can be accounted for by a correction in the current value of power supplies Number 2 and Number 3. The supplies were running about 1.75 percent high. Minor differences were noted in the short wavelength end of the hemisphere. Efforts to resolve the discrepancy between GSFC and Optronic Labs as well as improve the ability to make more accurate and precise measurements are underway.
