    Description: The Uhuru X-ray source 4U1722 + 11 was observed using the microchannel-plate detector (High Resolution Imager) on the Einstein Observatory, and its coordinates measured to a precision of about 5 arcsec. A 16th-magnitude stellar object within the error circle was observed spectroscopically at CTIO, and at the AAT, and found to have a featureless continuum. Subsequent radio observations at the VLA have established that the object is a radio source at the level of 60 mJy, and optical polarization measurements have determined that the source exhibits variable polarization at the level of 10 percent. On the basis of these observations, it is concluded that 4U1722 + 11 is a member of the class of objects known as X-ray selected blazars of BL Lac objects.

    Description: It is suggested that the pre-main-sequence object Z CMa is a luminous accretion disk, similar in many respects to the FU Orionis variables. Z CMa shows the broad, doubled optical absorption lines expected from a rapidly rotating accretion disk. The first overtone CO absorption detected in Z CMa is blue-shifted, suggesting line formation in a disk wind. Accretion at rates about 0.001 solar mass/yr over 100 yr is required to explain the luminosity of Z CMa. The large amount of material accreted (0.1 solar mass/yr) indicates that Z CMa is in a very early stage of stellar evolution, possibly in an initial phase of massive disk accretion.

    Description: A unified model of chemical and dynamical evolution of isolated, initially diffuse and quiescent interstellar clouds is presented. The model uses a semiempirically derived dependence of the observed cloud temperatures on the visual extinction and density. Even low-mass, low-density, diffuse clouds can collapse in this model, because the inward pressure gradient force assists gravitational contraction. In contrast, previous isothermal collapse models required the low-mass diffuse clouds to be unrealistically cold before gravitational contraction could start. Theoretically predicted dependences of the column densities of various atoms and molecules, such as C and CO, on visual extinction in diffuse clouds are in accord with observations. Similarly, the predicted dependences of the fractional abundances of various chemical species (e.g., CO, H2CO, HCN, HCO(+)) on the total hydrogen density in the core of the dense clouds also agree with observations reported to date in the literature. Compared with previous models of interstellar chemistry, the present model has the potential to explain the wide spectrum of chemical and physical properties of both diffuse and dense clouds with a common formalism employing only a few simple initial conditions.

    Description: An area of about 9 by 10 arc minutes in the M17 molecular cloud has been mapped in the J=3-2 transition of CO. The strongest CO emission is observed to come from the two bars to the north and southwest, which lie just outside the area of ionized gas seen in the radio continuum studies. We are viewing the boundary between the ionized and molecular gas almost edge on. The most intense CO emission is from the area around the dense molecular cloud core M17SW in the southwest bar. To the east of M17SW there are signs of recent or continuing star formation including H2O masers and an ultra-compact HII region. The CO J=3-2 spectra observed are complex with considerable variation in line shapes occuring over distances of less than one arc minute. We interpret the velocity structure of this region as arising from an ensemble of molecular cloud fragments in addition to extended emission. We have identified several cloud components at different velocities within both the northern and southwest bars of CO emission. A simple kinematic model of the cloud components in the southwest bar in which they are considered to be clumps of post-shock gas lying close to the edge of the expanding HII region, with the shock being driven by Kleinmann's star, gives a velocity of approx. 10.8 km s(-1) for the expansion velocity of the HII region, which is currently at a distance of approx. 2.4 pc from Kleinmann's star. The resulting shock is thought to be preceding the ionisation front and appears to have led to the fragmentation of the original cloud.

    Description: The bright molecular bar in M83 was detected standing out as a 100% enhancement of molecular emission with respect to the off-bar emission at the same radii. The spatial variations in the star formation efficiency, as traced by H alpha emission and the surface density of the interstellar gas, in M83 and M51 were compared. Both the central bar of M83 and the spiral arms of M51 are regions characterized by high massive star formation rates. For M83, it is ascribed that both the gas surface density and the star formation efficiency are high to the hydrodynamics of the central region.

    Description: A comprehensive analysis of E 1114 + 182, the first eclipsing AM Herculis binary system and the shortest-period eclipsing cataclysmic variable known, is presented. The time-resolved X-ray observations which led to the system's recognition as an AM Her system with a roughly 90 minute orbital period are reported. The current optical photometric and polarimetric ephemeris and a description of the system's phase-modulated properties are given. The detailed photometric eclipse profile and the highly variable spectroscopic behavior are addressed. This information is used to determine systemic parameters and derive new information on the line emission regions. The data put severe constraints on current torque models for keeping the binary and white dwarf rotation in phase.

    Description: The data obtained with two pointed observations of 1 deg by 1 deg fields of the Pleiades region have been analyzed, and the results are presented. The maximum-likelihood X-ray luminosity functions for the Pleiades G and K stars in the cluster are derived, and it is shown that, for the G stars, the Pleiades X-ray luminosity function is significantly brighter than the corresponding function for Hyades G dwarf stars. This finding indicates a dependence of X-ray luminosity on stellar age, which is confirmed by comparison of the same data with median X-ray luminosities of pre-main sequence and local disk population dwarf G stars. It is suggested that the significantly larger number of bright X-ray sources associated with G stars than with K stars, the lack of detection of M stars, and the relatively rapid rotation of the Pleiades K stars can be explained in terms of the onset of internal differential rotation near the convective envelope-radidative core interface after the spin-up phase during evolution to the main sequence.

    Description: Blue amorphous galaxies are star-forming, irregularlike systems which lack the spatially distinct OB stellar groups that are characteristic of most late-type galaxies. In order to better understand the nature of star-formation processes in these unusual galaxies, short-wavelength IUE spectra of the amorphous galaxies NGC 1705 and NGC 1800 have been obtained. It is found that NGC 1705 contains a normal mix of OB stars, which is consistent with the nearly constant recent star-formation rate inferred from new optical data. NGC 1800 is likely to have similar properties, and blue galaxies with amorphous structures thus do not show evidence for anomalies in stellar populations. The UV spectra of these galaxies and a variety of other hot extragalactic stellar systems in fact have similar characteristics, which suggests OB stellar populations are often homogeneous in their properties.

    Description: High-resolution VLA and VLBI observations of NGC 1068 at several different wavelengths are reported. These observations provide new information about the triple radio source in the central arcsec (75 pc) of the galaxy. The 21-cm European VLBI Network observations at 0.05-arcsec resolution detect a core of flux density 89 + or - 10 mJy. This core is dominated by a component less than 20 marcsec (1.5 pc) in diameter that has a brightness temperature of about 10 to the 8th K. Two more components may have been detected by the VLBI observations, one on either side of the compact core. At 0.07-arcsec resolution, the 1.3-cm VLA map of the central arcsec of NGC 1068 reveals a C-shaped radio morphology on scales from 10 to 50 pc. A comparison of the relative locations of the three components in the VLA and VLBI maps shows that the compact core in the VLBI map probably should be identified with the central component in the 1.3- and 2-cm VLA maps. If this identification is correct, the central component in the VLA maps is the actual nucleus of the galaxy. The core of the inner triple radio source may contain a significant flat-spectrum component. The presence of a compact core and the evidence for bending strengthen the argument that the inner triple radio source is produced by a mechanism similar to that operating in powerful radio galaxies. For a minimum-energy configuration, magnetic-field strengths of about 1 mG and energy densities of about 100 nerg/cu cm are found for the components of this source.
