Notes: Abstract Amorphous layers produced at the surface of iron by B+ and C+ implantation (50 kV, 1×1018 ions cm−2) were analyzed by CEMS. The CEM spectrum of B+ implanted layer was composed of broad doublet and sextet. Spread hyperfine field distribution, P(H), indicates the formation of extremely disordered FeB layer. Annealing at 400°C brought about precipitation of FeB, which was converted to Fe2B by annealing at 500°C. The P(H) for C+ implanted iron was resolved to 3 subpeaks with H values of 11.0, 18.0 and 22.5 T. The amorphous FeC phase was strongly correlated to crystalline Fe5C2 and Fe2C, which precipitated at 300°C and were transformed into Fe3C at 500°C. The amorphous layer disappeared by annealing at 600°C.

Notes: Abstract Silicon nitride hard coatings on tool steel produced by ion beam mixing following sputter or vapour deposition were investigated by RBS and Vickers microhardness measurements. Atomic mixing in the coating/steel interface region resulting in an improved adhesion and in a significant increase of the microhardness of the surface layers was found. Ion beam mixing with gas ions and high fluences leads to blistering of the implanted atoms in the silicon nitride layer.

Notes: A specific and sensitive method for the determination of ethylenediamine in human plasma is described. The aqueous sample is treated with m-toluoyl chloride, yielding the N,N′-bis(m-toluoyl) derivative of the diamine, which is extracted into dichloromethane and quantitated after “on column” methylation by capillary gas liquid chromatography with alkali flame ionization detection. The corresponding derivative of putrescine serves as internal standard. The assay is reproducible and calibration curves are linear over the concentration range 0.05 to 10 μg · ml-1. The lower detection limit is about 10 ng · ml-1. The structures of the compounds of interest eluting from the capillary column are examined by gas liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The assay has been applied to the analysis of ethylenediamine in plasma following the administration of aminophylline and ethylenediamine in a cross-over study to patients with bronchopulmonary diseases. The method also proves suitable for measuring other primary and secondary amines and diamines in aqueous solutions by gas liquid chromatography.
