Notes: Summary Two techniques were useful in overcoming hybrid inviability between N. repanda and N. tabacum. These techniques combine gamma-ray irradiation to pollen or to egg cells (in ovules) with in vitro culture of fertilized ovules. When in vitro culture of fertilized ovules from in situ hybridization of N. repanda x N. tabacum was combined without gamma-ray irradiation to pollen or to egg cells (in ovules), all of the resulting seedlings developed chlorosis and died. Furthermore, in the case of in situ hybridization of N. repanda x N. tabacum with gamma-ray irradiated N. tabacum pollen, no viable seeds were obtained. By using both techniques, combining gamma-ray irradiation to N. tabacum pollen or to egg cells in (N. repanda ovules) with in vitro culture of fertilized ovules, we were successful in obtaining flowering hybrid plants. Thus, it appears that it may be possible to overcome hybrid inviability to a certain extent using both the pollen irradiation technique and the egg cell irradiation technique, i.e., gamma-ray irradiation to pollen or to egg cells (in ovules) before pollination and in vitro culture of fertilized ovules.

Notes: Summary p-Dimethoxybenzene is anodically oxidative polymerized to poly(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene). p-Diethoxybenzene and p-dipropoxybenzene are also polymerized because the alkoxy groups reduce oxidation peak potentials of the benzene derivatives. This electro-oxidative polymerization is studied with the preparative electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry. The polymerization contains an electrophilic reaction of cation radical of the benzene and proceeds through a stepwise or chain propagation according to the supplied potential.

Notes: Summary D-Cysteinolic acid (1) analogues with an S-C-C-N skeleton showed increased platelet anti-aggregant activity in the following order: 2-aminoethanesulfonic acids, thiazolidines, 2-aminoethanethiols and 2-aminoethyl disulfides. Methyl substitutions at the 2-position potentiated the activity. Of these analogues, bis [(R)-2-aminopropyl] disulfide was the most potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation, with about 600-fold the activity of (1).

Notes: Abstract A review is given of the nonlinear response and chaos induced by impact ionization of neutral shallow donors, observed in n-GaAs. Two kinds of the observation are described; (i) firing wave instability, and (ii) periodically driven current filament. For the firing wave instability, several important aspects are discussed including the selective excitation of the current filaments and the deterministic nature of the firing density wave. The nonlinear response of a periodically driven current filament has been investigated by applying a dc+ac bias of the form ofV dc+V ac sin(2πf 0 t), wheref 0∼1 MHz. The carrier dynamics and the bifurcation routes to chaos are discussed in terms of the observed phase diagram and the bifurcation map. The deterministic nature of the strange attractors are described in detail in terms of the correlation dimension and the Kolmogorov entropy.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes steady-state and transient responses of transcutaneous pO2 and pCO2 by mass spectrometry. The effects of factors affecting the responses were estimated from a mathematical model comprising the skin, a membrane of a sampler and a tube connected to a mass spectrometer. The effect of heading temperature, membrane thickness, gas permeabilities of the membrane and the dimensions of the connecting tube were verified experimentally. Transcutaneous tension (tcp) in O2 in a steady state was much more dependent on temperature and membrane thickness than in CO2. The transient response of the tcp was found to be improved, without decreasing the magnitude of the steady-state tcp, by a thinner membrane with a lower permeability and by a shorter connecting tube of a larger inner diameter. The method of calibration was also examined because the magnitude of tcp by mass spectrometry was influenced in particular by water vapour.

Notes: Abstract Nine accessions ofVicia narbonensis, considered to be the wild progenitor of faba bean (Vicia faba), were investigated to ascertain the nature and extent of intraspecific karyotypic polymorphism. The chromosome complements resolved into four distinct types (A, B, C, D), and the meiotic data of F1 hybrids (A × B, B × C, A × C) revealed that alteration in chromosome morphology is the result of segmental interchanges. The interchange complexes indicate that the parents differ from each other by 1 to 2 interchanges. It is also evident that karyotype B, and not A as previously reported, is the normal karyotype of the species, and A and C are single homozygotes for unequal interchange. The comparative karyomorphology of the parents and the hybrids, and of two interchange heterozygotes of four chromosomes each in F1 hybrids of A × C shows that the chromosomes involved in the single interchange homozygotes (A, C) are not common and the breaks in both interchanges occurred in short and long arms of the involved chromosomes. Identification of the interchanged chromosomes in the complements and the frequency of ring and chain quadrivalents in the heterozygotes enabled location of the breakpoints. The present results provide probably the first example indicating that interchange homozygosity (A) is not only firmly established but also has enabled the species to spread further by adapting to a wide range of habitats. — The genetic relationships between A and D are very different. All seven chromosome pairs in D could be distinguished from A, and for that matter, B and C as well. From the meiotic pairing properties it is also amply clear that genome D is well differentiated from A and possibly B, and C, and deserves special status.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with a three-dimensional deformation analysis of workpieces mounted in fixtures, where the workpieces are finite solid cylinders. The analysis is carried out using a three-dimensional theory of elasticity, where clamping forces caused by chucks are regarded as an axi-asymmetrical load. In numerical calculations, the effects of a number of chuck jaws, the diameter of workpieces and the grasping area on the roundness of the workpieces are shown. For verification, a three-dimensional photoelastic experiment is performed. In addition, the deformation of workpieces is measured by an electric comparator and by holography. The analytical results are satisfactorily consistent with the experimental results.
