    Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation was made of a two dimensional flow formed by the interaction of two asymmetric turbulent curved wall jets past a circular cylinder. Measurements were made of velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the two curved wall jets before the interaction, and those of the merged jet after the interaction. The location of the interaction region of the two opposing curved wall jets and the flow direction of the merged jet were found to depend primarily on the ratio of initial momentum fluxes. The velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the merged jet were similar to those of the plane turbulent jet. However, the growth rate of the merged jet was approximately 1.5 times larger than that of the plane jet. The influence of the momentum flux ratio on the growth rate appeared to be insignificant.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of internal oxidation of silver-indium alloys containing 3.5, 5.9, and 9.8 at.% In in air at temperatures 773 to 973 K were established by TGA with no load applied to the specimens. Silver nodules free of oxide particles were observed to form at the surface during internal oxidation. The volume of these silver nodules was comparable to the total volume increase caused by internal oxidation. The alloys were also creep tested during oxidation in air at creep rates varying from 10−7 to 5×10−5 s−1 at 773, 873, and 973 K. The parabolic rate constants kp for the internal oxidation of the solute were determined from the measured widths of the internal oxidation zones. A small increase in kp was observed with increased strain rate. The large volume change associated with internal oxide formation resulted in a stress gradient between the stress-free surface and the internal oxidation front which is under a high compressive stress. Stress relief occurred by transport of silver to the surface. A Nabarro-Herring creep type mechanism based on lattice diffusion of Ag cannot account for the high rate of silver transport to the surface. Pipe-diffusion controlled creep is proposed as the mechanism of stress accommodation by silver diffusion.

    Notes: Summary To measure productivity of Agave deserti over its elevational range in the northwestern Sonoran Desert, leaf unfolding from its basal rosette was monitored on groups of 10 plants at 13 sites. Based on data from an intermediate elevation (840 m), leaf unfolding proved to be highly correlated (r 2=0.88) with an environmental productivity index (EPI) formed as the product of indices for water status, temperature, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR); each of these latter indices indicated the fraction of maximum net CO2 uptake expected for that parameter based on laboratory measurements of gas exchange and field microclimatic data. At 840 m, the main environmental variable influencing leaf unfolding for A. deserti over a 2-y period was soil water potential. On steep slopes, however, leaf unfolding during the winter ranged from 0.7 leaves per 10 plants for north-facing slopes to 7.3 for south-facing slopes, reflecting the importance of PAR. Summer and winter rainfall increased 3-fold from elevations of 300 m to 1,200 m. Temperatures were more optimal for net CO2 uptake at high elevations in the summer and at low elevations in the winter. Hence EPI increased with elevation in the summer but was maximal at an intermediate elevation in the winter. Moreover, measured leaf unfolding in both the summer and the winter closely followed the changes in EPI with elevation, indicating that productivity could be closely predicted for A. deserti based on physiological CO2 responses and changes in environmental conditions with elevation.

    Notes: Summary This study was undertaken to determine whether the Are gene controlling anthracnose resistance had an adverse effect on maturity and yield because backcross-derived cultivars/lines had numerically lower yield and later maturity than the respective recurrent parent. Three pairs of common bean lines near-isogenic for theAre gene were developed fromAre are F2 plants of the sixth backcross of Seafarer, Fleetwood, and Ex Rico 23. The near-isogenic lines were tested along with the recurrent cultivars and backcross-derived cultivars/lines. The results showed no evidence of any adverse effect of theAre gene on the agronomic characteristics in 11 trails at 5 locations in 3 years.

    Notes: Abstract The phenomena of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and its reverse effect, which is known as retrograde condensation (RC), have found new and important applications in industrial separation of chemical compounds and recovery and processing of natural products and fossil fuels. Full-scale industrial utilization of SFE/RC processes requires knowledge about thermodynamic and transport characteristics of the asymmetric mixtures involved and the development of predictive modeling and correlation techniques for performance of the SFE/RC system under consideration. In this report, through the application of statistical mechanical techniques, the reasons for the lack of accuracy of existing predictive approaches are described and they are improved. It is demonstrated that these techniques also allow us to study the effect of mixed supercritical solvents on the solubility of heavy solutes (solids) at different compositions of the solvents, pressures, and temperatures. Fluid phase equilibrium algorithms based on the conformal solution van der Waals mixing rules and different equations of state are presented for the prediction of solubilities of heavy liquid in supercritical gases. It is shown that the Peng-Robinson equation of state based on conformal solution theory can predict solubilites of heavy liquid in supercritical gases more accurately than the van der Waals and Redlich-Kwong equations of state.

    Notes: Abstract Inhibition and recovery of net CO2 uptake and three photosynthetic electron transport reactions as well as plant survival following high-temperature treatments were investigated for Opuntia ficus-indica. For plants maintained at 30°C/20°C day/night air temperatures, treatment at 60°C for 1 h irreversibly inhibited net CO2 uptake and photosynthetic electron transport, resulting in plant death in about 60 days. When a plant maintained at 30°C/20°C was treated at 55°C for 1 h, net CO2 uptake was completely inhibited 1 d after the treatment but fully recovered in 60 d. Differential inactivation of photosystem (PS) I, PSII, and whole chain electron transport activities occurred; PSI was the most tolerant of 55°C and took the least time (45 d) for total recovery. All 30°C/20°C plants survived a 1-h treatment at 55°C, although some pale green areas were observed on the cladode surfaces. In contrast to growing at 30°C/20°C, plants acclimated to 45°C/35°C survived 60°C for 1 h without showing any necrotic or pale green areas on the cladode surfaces. When such a plant was transferred to 30°C/20°C following the high-temperature treatment, recovery in net CO2 uptake began in 1 d and progressed to complete recovery by 30 d. Growth temperatures thus influence the possibility for recovery of photosynthetic reactions and ultimately the survival of O. ficus-indica following a high-temperature exposure.

    Notes: Abstract Common bean,Phaseolus vulgaris L., is known to be ‘inefficient’ in nodulation and N2 fixation although it responds to applied nitrogen. An experiment was conducted to identify and to characterize bean cultivars nodulating in the presence of a high level of nitrogen. Sixteen cultivars and a check for inefficient nodulation, OAC Seaforth, were inoculated and grown for 40 days in replicated pots supplied with zero, 3.5 and 10.5 mM combined nitrogen as NO 3 − and NH 4 + . Seven traits relating to nodulation and N2 fixation were all significantly affected by N level (N), cultivar (Cv) and N × Cv interactions (except for root dry weight), indicating that cultivars responded differently to the N treatments. Total dry weight (W) and shoot to root ratio (S/R) increased with the increased N levels. Nodule dry weight (Wn), visual nodulation score (Nv) and nodulation index (Nx) decreased as the N increased. Percent N and N content per plant increased with the increased N level. Plant weight (W) was positively correlated with Wn, Nv and N content and negatively correlated with %N. Nodulation score was positively associated with Wn and plant N content. Genotypes superior in nodulation and N2 fixation in the presence of N were identified. Cultivars Italian Barlotti, California Light Red Kidney, Kentucky Wonder A and Pueblo 152 were selected for further testing and use in improving the nitrate tolerant nodulating characteristic of bean.
