Notes: Abstract The theory of design sensitivity analysis of structures, based on mixed finite element models, is developed for static, dynamic and stability constraints. The theory is applied to the optimal design of plates with minimum weight, subject to displacement, stress, natural frequencies and buckling stresses constraints. The finite element model is based on an eight node mixed isoparametric quadratic plate element, whose degrees of freedom are the transversal displacement and three moments per node. The corresponding nonlinear programming problem is solved using the commercially available ADS (Automated Design Synthesis) program. The sensitivities are calculated by analytical, semi-analytical and finite difference techniques. The advantages and disadvantages of mixed elements in design optimization of plates are discussed with reference to applications.

Notes: Abstract Using a multireferent MBPT method (CIPSI) the electronic affinity (EA) of F, CN and HCC is computed. Results show how UMP2 gives unbalanced truncation of the MP series, while ROMP2 has the correct (balanced) behaviour. The good agreement with the experimental EA found for some compounds is accidental and associated to an error compensation. The good agreement with the experimental data found for the ROMP2 and CIPSI EAs is analysed.

Notes: Abstract We derive the markovian limit of the collisional Random Phase Approximation (CRPA) by resort to the linearization of the Collisional Time-Dependent-Hartree-Fock (CTDHF) equation of motion for the one-body density matrix. The CRPA spectral problem is numerically solved in the frame of a model consisting of a finite fermion system with axial symmetry interacting by means of a separable force. Calculations are performed within a range of interaction strengths, temperature and size parameters and it is shown that both the centroids and the widths of the high energy collective modes exhibit the trend of experimental data.

Notes: Abstract We formulate a version of the collisional Random-Phase-Approximation obtained from the linearization of a general kinetic equation. The resulting equations are formally solved in three different situations depending on the way the previous history is considered. An application of the formalism here developed to a two level model is made.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the magnetic Kapitza resistance between single crystals of CMN and lanthanum-diluted CMN in contact with ultrapure liquid3He are presented. The investigations were performed in the temperature range 2–100 mK and in magnetic fields up to 600 Oe. For the first time, a magnetic thermal coupling between bulk crystals with dimensions of up to 3 mm and liquid3He was observed. In the case of pure CMN and liquid3He below 7 mK, the relationR ∞ T n withn=4±1 is seen. A strong dependence ofR with magnetic field and Ce3+ content is found.

Notes: Abstract Low-field magnetic screening and breakdown fields have been measured in thick proximity-induced superconducting copper by means of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility in the temperature range 10 to 0.005 K. From the thickness and temperature dependence of the breakdown field the Cooper pair penetration depth in copper is obtained. This value isK N −1 =0.6/T μm, withT in kelvins. No saturation effects were observed in the screening length ρ, the breakdown fieldH b, or the supercooled fieldH sc down to the lowest temperatures.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic properties of micrometer thick, proximity-induced superconductors have been investigated in the temperature range 5×10−4 T CNS 〈T〈T CNS . HereT CNS is the transition temperature of the NS proximity system. By means of ac susceptibility measurements and dc magnetization curves in copper and silver, we have determined the breakdown fieldH b , the supercooled fieldH sc and the superheated fieldH sh , as functions of temperature and normal metal thicknessd N . Precise magnetization curves of specimens withd N 〈15 µm at the lowest temperatures gave the screening length ρ as function of the field H. From these data, the spatial dependence of the local critical fieldH c (x) and of the induced order parameterΔ N (x) in theN side were derived in the caseΔ N (x)〉k B T and x≪K N −1 . HereK N −1 is the Cooper pair penetration length, andx the distance form the SN interface.

Notes: Abstract This study examines the coefficient of inbreeding in the population of Rio de Onor (Portugal), for a period of 120 years. Two distinct methods were used: the dispensations for consaguineous marriages and isonymy. The two methods produced different results and these differences are explained, for the period after 1960, in terms of emigration.
