Notes: The [2 + 2] Photocycloaddition of 2-(trimethylsilyloxy)-1,3-butadiene to a number of 2-cycloalkenones proved to be quite a general reaction leading to good yields of the cycloadducts (Table). This finding is surprising since dienes, in general, are better known as quenchers of enone triplets rather than as photochemical reactants. Both the high substrate concentrations, which can be employed in these cycloadditions, and the remarkable regio and stereoselectivity of the processes qualify them as valuable for syntheses. In a first application, the photoproducts 1a, b were transformed in three steps into a viable precursor 4 of the pentalenolactone-G and -H antibiotics.

Notes: Depending on the reaction conditions either 2,6-disubstituted 2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-4H-1,3-thiazin-4-ones 4 or 1,6-disubstituted 2-thiouracils 5 are readily prepared by base-catalyzed cyclization of N-propenoylthioureas 3. Compounds 5 could also be obtained by Dimroth-type rearrangement of 1,3-thiazin-4-ones 4 under the same reaction conditions.

Notes: Methyl methacrylate was grafted onto starch by the ceric ion method with and without removing of the unabsorbed ceric ions. Graft level, molecular weight of the grafted chains, and number of the grafted chains were measured in dependence on ceric ion concentration. On base of the results the mechanism of the grafting reaction is discussed.

Notes: The infrared spectra of poly(methyl methacrylate) samples doped with different luminescent materials show no drastic changes in the position and intensity of the absorption bands, except in case of β-naphthol. From this it is supposed that there is no interaction between the dopant and PMMA with most of the investigated materials, while with β-naphthol hydrogen bonding between adjacent molecules in the polymer matrix is observed.

Notes: New semiconducting copolymers were prepared by bulk copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with chromium acrylate. The pattern of the chemical reactions is discussed. The density and hardness of the samples decrease with increase of the chromium content. I n the infrared spectrum broadening of the carbonyl band a t 1710 cm-l is observed, which indicates the possibility of coordination of the C=O group with the chromium ion. The electrical conductivity of the samples increases with increase of chromium acrylate content. The effect of y-irradiation on the electrical conductivity of the copolymers was studied.

Notes: The graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile onto bleached holocellulose using an initiation procedure in which the unadsorbed ceric ions are removed from the polymerization system is reported. With this method higher graft levels and higher efficiency of grafting is achieved than with the continuous initiation method.

Notes: Solubility and diffusivity measurements of a probe gas (CO2), which has an inherently low solubility in the polymer, have been used to characterize residual porosity in polymeric latex films. Sorption isotherms resembling those of a glassy polymer were obtained, even though the glass transition temperature of the polymer was 1°C, about 30°C below the experimental temperature. Solvent cast films of the same polymer exhibited much lower solubilities, and followed the expected Henry's law behavior. CO2 solubility and diffusivity were found to decrease with aging time for the latex films, but did not quite reach the values of the solvent cast films, even after 75 days at room temperature. The sorption data could be described by the dual-mode sorption model, which is commonly employed in the analysis of glassy polymer sorption isotherms. Estimates of the amount of porosity were made from the sorption data, and values ranging from 0.6-0.03% were obtained for latex films aged from 62 h to 75 days, respectively. Our results suggest that permeability differences noted by others for latex and solvent cast films of the same polymer are due to the substantial solubility differences for low-solubility penetrants in these two types of films.

Notes: Gradient elution under hydrostatic equilibrium is extended to the treatment of the case where the two liquids have different densities. Analytic expressions are derived only for the cases where both mixing chamber and reservoir have constant cross-sectional areas. As in the case where the densities of the liquids are equal, pressigned concentration gradients can be duplicated quite satisfactorily by combining a mixing chamber having a constant cross-sectional area and a reservoir having an area which changes linearly with reservoir height. A numerical example is given to illustrate the use of the derived equations.
