    Notes: The adenocarcinoma LT85 was chemically induced in a mouse from a C3Hf colony shown subsequently to be inbred for a gene conversion-like mutation at the H-2K locus, characterized by a clustered four nucleotide substitution in exon 3. The H-2K phenotype of LT85, however, more closely resembles that of C3H rather than the mutant strain now designated C3Hf H-2km2. We cloned and sequenced the H-2K gene from this tumor to determine whether (i) LT85 might carry a tumor-associated somatic reversion of the H-2Kkm2 germline mutation or (ii) the tumor was induced in a mouse that was genetically H-2k rather than H-2km2. Our analysis confirmed that the LT85 H-2K allele is identical throughout the entire coding region to C3H H-2Kk. To exclude the possibility of a somatic reversion by recombination, we used an oligonucleotide probe corresponding to the region altered in H-2k to show that the C3Hf genome lacks the necessary coding information to reverse the H-2Kkm2 mutation through a sequence exchange with another class I locus. Since it is unlikely that multiple independent point mutations would account for restoration of this stretch of H-2Kk sequences, the tumor was probably established in a mouse carrying a normal H-2Kk allele, possibly at a point prior to the establishment of the H-2Kkm2 mutation as a homozygous trait within the C3Hf colony.

    Notes: Three cultivars of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (grain sorghum, forage sorghum, and a sorghum sudangrass hybrid) were evaluated as planted forages for crawfish (Procambarus spp.) in two simulated culture systems, double cropping and crawfish monoculture. Based upon ease of culture, biomass production, and biomass degradation characteristics, grain sorghum and sorghum sudangrass exhibited great potential for either system. With the added advantage of grain production, grain sorghum represents the more attractive option and may provide farmers with a viable alternative to rice for double cropping with crawfish. The sorghum sudangrass produced large amounts of vegetative biomass and also represents a worthwhile forage option for the crawfish fanner. Either of these plants is conveniently incorporated into existing farm operations and could provide options as producers strive to integrate crawfish aquaculture with conventional agriculture.

    Notes: Twenty-five domestic rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars were evaluated in a simulated rice/crawfish double cropping system in southwest Louisiana during 1983 and 1984. Wide variation was observed among cultivars in parameters believed to be important for maximizing productivity in such a system. Mean maturity ranged from 99 (Labelle) to 118 days (Starbonnet), while height ranged from 76 (Bellemont) to 130 cm (Della, Nato). Significant differences in grain yield response were observed, with yields ranging from 4,101 (Bluebelle) to 6,665 kg/hectare (Newbonnet). Straw dry matter production varied greatly, from 3,831 (Bellemont) to 9,170 kg/hectare (Della), and was positively correlated with plant height (r = 0.64; P = 0.0001). Ratoon biomass production was negatively correlated with both grain yield (r = -0.39; P = 0.0001) and maturity group (r = -0.69; P = 0.0001). Plant senescence at grain maturity also varied greatly and appears to be a factor in post-harvest ratoon capability. Early or very early maturing cultivars with both proven grain production and good ratooning capability appear best suited. Cultivar selection should be based upon individual farm situations and currently employed agronomic practices.

    Notes: Seven potential alternatives to rice (Oryza sativa) as planted forage for pond production of crawfish in southwest Louisiana were evaluated. Browntop (Panicum ramosum L.), Japanese [Echinochloa crusgulli var. frumentacea (Roxb.) Wight], proso (Panicum miliaceum L.), and pearl [Pennisetum typhoides (Burn.) Stapf & C.E. Hubb] millets were compared with volunteer weeds (primarily Cyperus spp.), grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench] and a sorghum sudangrass hybrid [S. bicolor (L.) Moench]. Early maturation and rapid senescence and decomposition characterized all except the two sorghums and pearl millet. The sorghum sudangrass was superior in biomass production and exhibited slow senescence. Grain sorghum and pearl millet also exhibited characteristics which might be desirable for use in some crawfish production ponds.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 1. This review considers the factors which determine the recovery of eutrophic lakes following a reduction in the external phosphorus loading.2 The mean phosphorus content of a lake should decrease roughly in proportion to the reduction in phosphorus input. Where the lake phosphorus concentration does not decrease as predicted, then the release of phosphorus from the sediment is implicated.3. The current understanding of the processes by which sediment phosphorus is mobilized and transported into the photic zone is described. The extent to which phosphorus release can maintain lake phosphorus concentrations following the reduction in external loading is influenced by: lake morphometry, flushing rate, sediment type, trophic state and history of enrichment.4. A reduction in the phytoplankton biomass of a lake is dependent upon the size of the decrease in lake phosphorus concentration and the degree to which phosphorus limits primary production. The importance of phosphorus in limiting phytoplankton production tends to decrease with increasing lake trophic status.5. Improvements in the condition of highly eutrophic lakes require very large reductions in external phosphorus loading, whereas in mildly enriched lakes moderate changes in the supply of phosphorus have noticeable effects on phytoplankton biomass.
