Notes: Abstract This paper presents an algorithm for the generation of Delaunay triangulations for general nonmanifold geometric models. Octree concepts are used for point placement and providing the linear, with respect to the number of elements, growth rate of the algorithm. Compatibility and classification procedures are used in conjunction with point injection procedures to ensure that the final Delaunay triangulation is a geometric triangulation of the domain of interest.

Notes: Abstract The use of an optical cavity containing a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) phase-conjugate reflector to control the spatial and spectral output of a long pulse (〉100 ns) X-ray preionized XeCl laser is reported. The divergence of the 3×4 cm2 output beam has been improved by a factor of ∼20 to 〈150 μrad. The temporal form of the output depends on the acoustic decay times of the liquid and gaseous SBS media used. Four-wave mixing via gain saturation has been observed within the discharge volume, leading to depolarisation of the output beam.

Notes: Summary A novel stable isotope labelling procedure for microbeam analysis was developed to monitor exchange and uptake of nutrients, primarily Mg, K and Ca, by root tips at the cellular level. Initially root samples were analysed from 2-year-old spruce trees, originating both from a nursery and from a polluted forest site, (1) for the cortex cell wall accessibility and nutrient binding properties, (2) for the influence of low pH and elevated aluminum concentrations on Ca binding to cortex cell walls, and (3) for long-range transport into the secondary xylem, proximal to the labelled root tip. In nursery control plants, Ca is localized mainly in the apoplast of the cortex. Exchange of Mg, K, Ca in the cell wall of the cortex and the primary xylem with label in incubation solutions is almost completed to equilibration within 30 min. In the secondary xylem we could detect Mg, K, and Ca from labelling solutions in minute amounts after 30 min, and as a major fraction after 48 h. This indicates that stable isotope labelling can be used to study both ion-exchange properties of the apoplast and long-range transport. Slight acidification of the labelling incubation media to pH 4.5 reduced Ca binding to the cortex cell walls slightly, but acidification to the extreme value of pH 2.3 reduced binding 41%. A combination of pH 4.5 and increased free aluminum reduced the binding by 83%. In a preliminary attempt to analyse the nutrient binding capability of the root-tip apoplast from pollution affected trees, we exposed fine roots of 2-year-old spruce from an acidified and polluted site showing typical low levels of Ca and Mg in the cortical cell walls to Ca-enriched media. Under these conditions the Ca content of cortex cell walls doubled upon incubation at pH 4.7, reaching 40% of the total binding capacity of our nursey control plants.

Notes: Summary Based on a comprehensive review of scientific sources from the 17th and 18th century, a new table of auroras for the years 1645–1705 is presented. Comparison of these data with long-time German recordings (latitude 50 to 55 N) demonstrates that the assumption of the Maunder Minimum is not confirmed by the data of the auroras.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The Munich method evaluates roe deer hunting districts in the Bavarian State forest according to their suitability as natural habitats. Indefinite estimates of population parameters are avoided. Stratified according to growth tones, 32 representative Bavarian State hunting districts were selected and described according to those landscape parameters which could characterise the habitat of roe deer. In choosing the landscape characteristics, it was borne in mind that these have to be easily and objectively measured. 34 roe deer experts, scientists and practitioners with wide regional experience from the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and Switzerland analysed the chosen districts on the basis of the descriptions. Their evaluations formed the basis of a regression analysis, the result of which is a formula for the estimation of the value of the district. It contains those landscape characteristics which, on the basis of the experts' judgement, most clearly reflect the value of the habitat. The validation of the results led to the derivation of the following definitive evaluation formula: $$RG = 3,94 + 1,46 WRF + 0,04 SON - 0,02 SCH - KON - BES$$ . RG = Value of district as roe deer habitat WRF = Area of woodland fringe: i.e. length of woodland edge × 10 m as a percentage of the total district area SON = Proportion of the area of all woodland species apart from spruce and pine to the district area SCH = Number of days per annum with snow lying to a depth of over 20 cm KON = Correction factor for interspecific competition by red deer and fallow deer BES = Correction factor for visitor pressure and disturbance.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The report presents a study using moulting as an indicator of condition in chamois populations. Two populations in the Bavarian Alps, known to be in different condition, formed the basis of the data. Regular observations of the spring moult revealed in each case the proportion of females and males which had begun to moult or had already completed moulting. The spread over time of the beginning of the moult follows a sigmoid function. The course of the moult is modelled using a logistic regression analysis. Regression coefficients and average date of the beginning of the moult were compared between the populations using a likelihood-quotient-test. The possibilities and limits of using the method are discussed. The beginning of the moult in both females and males was earlier in populations which were in better physical condition. The difference was shown to be significant only for the females. The results show that the time of the beginning of the moult can be used as an indicator of condition for chamois populations.

Notes: Abstract The propensity to resist chemical, photo-chemical or biological degradation processes, coupled with a high degree of mobility — due to favorable physical-chemical properties such as relatively high vapor pressure and low solubility in water - bestows upon some chemical substances the necessary pre-requisites for extensive cycling among environmental compartments. Certain inorganic and organometallic species of Hg exhibit the aforementioned characteristics. This paper presents field measurement data, collected in Canada and Sweden, that provide information concerning the direction and magnitude of the material fluxes associated with transfer processes of Hg in the natural environment. The results of the field measurements reported here point to the importance of the natural phenomena of emission or re-emission (i.e., volatilization processes) involving the release of volatile Hg species from lake and soil surfaces into the overlying air, at least under warm weather conditions. Consequently, volatilization fluxes of Hg from natural surfaces should be taken into account when constructing biogeochemical cycles for this element and when calculating mass balances or budgets for Hg on local, regional and global scales.
