    Notes: In summary, risk analysis is not yet well practiced in developing countries, although there are numerous, diverse environmental and other risk-related issues and concerns that need attention. A few initiatives have been taken, but, so far, they have created only relatively small impact in a few areas. Many risk issues may not be addressed, partly as a result of lack of resources and inadequate knowledge by policy makers.Risk analysis is an essential tool for the planning and implementation of development projects. To enhance its use, however, risk analysis approaches and methods must be adapted to developing countries, and this requires research. Unfortunately, funds for research, in general, are hard to find. There are other problems in the implementation of risk analysis. Trained professionals on risk analysis are few. Existing institutions that are tasked with resolving environmental and other risk issues are overburdened. Risk-related data are sorely lacking. Resources are very limited for addressing numerous natural and technological hazards.In most developing countries, political and economic stability is still threatened by both internal and external forces, hence, that is what receives priority attention. Activities like risk analysis, which generally lead to long-term results and benefits, do not get enough interest. In addition, there is still little public awareness of risks even among those who have passed the stage of survival; thus, there is little public concern about them.We cannot afford this lack of concern for long. In the Philippines, the government was the first to recognize after our peaceful revolution in 1986 that “the environmental issues can add fuel to the insurgency; they can also hamper efforts towards national recovery”.(4) To this point, I have added that risk management (including risk assessment and risk communication), like attainment of peace and freedom, is a social imperative because risk issues affect our health, safety, and both our physical and economic well-being.(7) Many of such issues in developing countries have not only local, but also global origin and impacts. They thus deserve the interest of each of us.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Chemische Zusammensetzung von Amphibolen aus Schiefern, Quarz-Feldspat-Gneisen, und Migmatiten, deren metamorpher Grad von Grünschiefer- bis zur Amphibolitfazies reicht, wurde mit der Elektronenstrahl-Mikrosonde bestimmt. Zwischengeschaltete Amphibolite legen die Vermutung nahe, daß einige der Gesteine durch retrograde Metamorphose aus dem Eklogit-Stabilitatsfeld hervorgegangen sind; andere jedoch hatten niemals in ihrer Entwicklung einen höheren Grad als den der Grünschie-ferfazies erreicht. Gesteine, die andere mineralogische Hinweise für eine ursprungliche Hochdruck-Paragenese führen, enthalten Amphibole mit hohem Na/K, niedrigen Eisen und relativ niedrigen Ti. Andere “high-grade” Gesteine enthalten Amphibol von pargasitischer Zusammensetzung. Die Pargasite aus mehr Kalzium-reichen Gesteinen zeigen geringere Substitution von Natrium für Kalzium an den M4 Plätzen als jene aus Kalzium-armen Gesteinen. Eine niedriger-gradige Paragenese von Amphibolen umfaßt Zusammensetzungen von Hornblende über aktinolitische Hornblende bis zu Aktinolit; diese ist in den Gneisen und Migmatiten retrograd, durfte in den Schiefern jedoch prograd sein. Im Gegensatz dazu zeigt die hochgradige Paragenese fast durchwegs konstant hohe Kalium-Gehalte mit variablem Natrium und einen anderen Trend für Edenit-artige Substitution (IVAl Variation mit Besetzung der A Plätze) und eine Variation vonIVAl mit Fe/(Fe + Mg) und mit Ti.
    Notes: Summary The chemistry of amphiboles from schists, quartzofeldspathic gneisses and migmatites ranging in metamorphic grade from greenschist to amphibolite facies has been determined by electron microprobe. Intercalated amphibolites suggest that some of the rocks retrograded from the eclogite stability field; others were never metamorphosed above greenschist facies. Rocks which contain other mineralogical evidence for an original high pressure assemblage have amphiboles with high Na/K, low Fe and relatively low Ti. Other high-grade rocks contain amphibole of broadly pargasitic composition. The pargasites from more Ca-rich bulk compositions have less substitution of Na for Ca in the M4 site than do those from Ca-poor bulk compositions. A lower grade assemblage of amphiboles ranges from hornblende through actinolitic hornblende to actinolite; this is retrograde in the gneisses and migmatites, but may be prograde in the schists. In contrast, the high-grade assemblage shows almost constant high K with variable Na and quite different trends for edenite-type substitution (IVAl variation with A site occupancy) and variation ofIVAl with Fe/(Fe + Mg) and with Ti.

    Notes: Summary An indirect approach was adopted to select viable mutants affecting the male gametophytic generation in maize. This approach consists of a selection of endosperm defective mutants followed by a test for gametophytic gene expression, based on the distortion from mendelian segregation and on the measurement of pollen size and pollen sterility. The material used consisted of 34 endosperm defective viable mutants introgressed in B37 genetic background. Complementation tests indicated that the mutation in the collection of mutants affected different genes controlling endosperm development. The study of the segregation in F2 revealed four classes of de (defective endosperm) mutants: (1) mutants in which the mutation does not affect either gametophytic development or function; (2) mutants in which the effect on the gametophyte affects pollen development processes; (3) mutants showing effects on both pollen development and function, and (4) mutants where only pollen tube growth rate is affected. Positive and negative interactions between pollen and style were detected by means of mixed pollination (pollen produced by de/de plants and pollen from an inbred line used as a standard and carrying genes for colored aleurone), on de/de and de/ + plants. Positive interactions were interpreted as methabolic complementation between defective pollen and normal styles.

    Notes: Abstract A series of experiments using flow chambers was undertaken in the field to investigate the effects of stubble and fertilizer management, soil moisture and precipitation on ammonia volatilization following nitrogen application on chromic luvisols. In the first factorial experiment, urea at 100 kg N ha−1 was applied to the soil surface one, three and six days following irrigation; there were four rice stubble management systems comprising stubble burnt, stubble burnt then rotary hoed, stubble rotary hoed into the soil and stubble retained on the surface. Cultivation almost halved ammonia loss. The higher loss from uncultivated plots was ascribed to an alkaline ash bed on burnt plots, and to higher soil moisture and some retention of urea prills in the crop residue above the soil surface of the stubble retention plots. Average volatilization over a 12 day period following urea application from plots fertilizer one, three or six days after irrigation was 16, 15 and 4 kg N ha−1, respectively. Daily application of up to 1.7 mm of water did not reduce volatilization and 35 kg N ha−1 was lost within five days of fertilization. Daily precipitation of 6.8 mm reduced loss to 14 kg N ha−1. This quantity of rain is uncommon in the region and it was concluded that showery conditions are unlikely to reduce volatilization. The third experiment demonstrated that the quantity of stubble on the soil surface had no effect on volatilization, and all plots lost 25% of applied nitrogen. In the fourth experiment, 100 kg N ha−1 as urea or ammonium nitrate was either broadcast onto the surface or stubble retention plots, or placed, and partly covered to simulate topdressing with a disc implement. Partial burial of urea reduced ammonia volatilization from 36 to 7 kg N ha−1, while partial burial of ammonium nitrate reduced loss from 4 to 0 kg N ha−1.
