Notes: Abstract Changes of plasma osmolality, chloride concentration and gill Na−K-ATPase activity in tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus (obtained from Tainan Fish Culture Station of Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute, 1987) during seawater acclimation were examined. Three experiments were performed. (1) Freshwater (FW) to 30‰ salinity seawater (SW): plasma osmolality and chloride rose violently immediately post-transfer. At 6 h, gill Na−K-ATPase activity began to increase but most fish died from excessive plasma osmolality and Cl. (2) FW to 20‰ salinity SW: plasma osmolality and chloride increased immediately post-transfer, but more slowly than in (1), and began to decrease at 24 h. However it was not until 12 h post-transfer that gill Na−K-ATPase activity rose slowly. (3) FW to 20‰ salinity SW for 24 h, then to 30‰ salinity SW: after transfer to 30‰ salinity, plasma osmolality and chloride showed only a small increase initially then declined, while gill Na−K-ATPase activity started to rise rapidly within 3 h. The present results coincided with our previous morphological data concerning the ultrastructural responses of gill chloride cells. These are discussed to elucidate the osmoregulation mechanisms in tilapia during seawater acclimation.

Notes: Binary diffusion coefficients at high dilution are measured for ethane and ethylene dissolved in cyclohexane at temperatures from 280.5 to 363.2 K and for benzene in cyclohexane and n-hexane up to their critical temperatures. With the effective hard-sphere diameters backed out from self-diffusion data from both solute and solvent molecules and fitted to Protopapas, Anderson, and Parlee's formula, the prediction with the Sung–Stell theory is found to agree to within ±7% of experimental data for wide ranges of solute-to-solvent mass and size ratios at temperatures up to the critical point.

Notes: We report, for the first time, the experimental observation of capacitive modulation of bipolar current in crystalline silicon devices consisting of a lateral p-i-n channel and an insulated polycrystalline silicon gate. Modulation characteristics of devices with different channel lengths are compared.

Notes: In this letter, we report a stepped-gate-oxide structure implemented in the gate-controlled photodetector. The experimental results show that a one-order-of-magnitude enhancement in the response speed can be achieved by the use of such a structure owing to the induced transverse electrical field.

Notes: Abstract The objective of this paper is to determine theoretically the material damping of short fibre-reinforced polymer matrix composites. The major damping mechanism in such composites is the viscoelastic behaviour of the polymer matrix. The analysis was carried out by developing a finite-element program which is capable of evaluating the stress and strain distribution of short fibre composites under axial loading (see Fig. 1a). Using the concept of balance of force we can express the modulusE x along the loading direction as a function of the mechanical properties of the fibre and matrix materials, fibre aspect ratio,l/d, loading angle,θ, and fibre volume fraction,V f. Then we apply the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle to replace all the mechanical properties of the composite, fibre and matrix materials such asE x,E f,E m,G m, by the corresponding complex moduli such asE x ′ +iE x ″ , andE f ′ +iE f ″ . After separation of the real and imaginary parts, we can expressE ' x/t' andE x t" as functions of the fibre aspect ratio,l/d, loading angle,θ, stiffness ratio,E f/E m, fibre volume fraction,V f, and damping properties of the fibre and matrix materials such asη f andη m. Numerical results of the composite storage modulus,E x ′ , loss modulus,E x ″ , and loss factor (damping),η C, are plotted as functions of parameters such asl/d,θ,V f, and are discussed in terms of variations ofl/d,θ, andE f/E m, in detail. It is observed that for a given composite, there exist optimum values ofl/d andθ at whichE x ″ andη c are maximized. The results of this paper can be used to optimize the performance of composite structures.

Notes: Summary The functionality of divinyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was greatly increased by a substitution reaction to give PDMS with triethoxysilyl chain ends. Samples having number-average molecular weights of 720 and 17.6 × 103 g mol−1, and mixtures thereof, were added to tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) or a related silane. The functionalized PDMS-silane mixtures were hydrolyzed in the usual sol-gel technique to give polymer-modified silica glasses. The hardness of the glasses was measured, and then related to the molecular weight of the PDMS, its molecular weight distribution, the composition of the PDMS-silane mixtures, and the nature of the silane.
