Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of the Alkyl Substituents on Copper(II) Extraction by 1-Alkyl-2(2-hydroxyphenyl)-Δ2-imidazolinesIn acid solution (pH ≤ 4) 1-alkyl-2(2-hydroxyphenyl)-Δ2-imidazolines (RLH) form cations RLH2+ and copper(II) chelates of the type Cu(RNNO)2. Therefore in the course of the copper(II) extraction the addition of two ligands RLH and the elimination of four protons are expected. For systems with BuLH as an extractant this prediction is confirmed by slope-analysis (lg DCu vs. lg co,BuLH and lg DCu vs. pH). But in extraction systems of OcLH and DodLH, depending on the concentration of RLH, the slope of lg DCu vs. lg co,RLH is not higher than 1 or even 0. The reason is that the copper(II) extraction is preceded by the formation of the complexes \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm Cu}\left[{\left({{\rm R}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNOH}} \right){\rm X}^ \ominus } \right]^{2 \oplus } $\end{document} (III) and \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ {\rm Cu}\left[{\left({{\rm R}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNOH}} \right){\rm X}^ \ominus } \right]_2 ^{2 \oplus } $\end{document} (IV) in the aqueous phase. Among other reasons the concentration of III and IV depends on the tendency of RLH2⊕ to form ion pairs \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \left({{\rm R}\mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus {\rm HNOH}} \right){\rm X}^ \ominus $\end{document} (I). This tendency increases with the length of the alkyl chains and for the anions in the order SO42- ≤ NO3- ≤ ClO4-. Such quantities of III and IV which are essential for the course of the extraction are formed only with the extractants OcLH and DodLH, but not with BuLH.In general a variation of peripheric alkyl chains in metal extractants changes only the distribution coefficients of the corresponding metal chelates. But in the series BuLH, OcLH, DodLH both the distribution coefficients and the extraction process as a whole are changed. Some influence of the partial deprotonation of III and IV on the extraction curves is observed.

Description / Table of Contents: β-Methylmercapto-ethyl amine (MÄA) behaves as a chelate ligand in 1,1, 1,2 and 1,3 complexes of Cu(II) and Ni(II). In 1,4 complexes of Cu(II), however, two of the MÄA ligands are only bound to the cation by the amino group, and the same is true for both MÄA molecules in [Co(MÄA)2Cl2] and [Zn(MÄA)2Cl2]. β-Ethoxy-ethylamine (ÄÄA)reacts with Cu(II)and Ni(II) salts forming 1,2 and 1,4 complexes in which the ether group probably has no ligand properties. The blue [Co(ÄÄA)2Cl2] having a tetrahedral configuration takes up two addtional ÄÄA molecules into its lattice at room temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Secondary and tertiary aliphatic amines react with Ni(II) halides forming coordination compounds with Ni:amine = 1:4, 1:3 and 1:2. The 1:3 complexes have probably a binuclear octahedral structure, whereas the 1:2 compound are both of tetrahedral or planarquadratic configuration. On dissolving the complexes in benzene structural changes occur.

Description / Table of Contents: Silver salts of monobasic acids react with 2-aminopyridine and its derivatives forming generally 1,2 complexes. AgNO3, however, yields with 2-aminopyridine coordination compounds having metal to ligand ratios of 1:3 and 3:4. From the IR spectra is follows that the ring N of 2-methylamino-pyridine is bound to the silver ion, whereas 2-aminopyridine and 2-amino-6-methyl-pyridine seem to be bound by the NH2 groups, too, with no loss in the ability of these groups to form hydrogen bonds.

Description / Table of Contents: Whereas the halides of 3d elements are almost insoluble in SiCl4, ferrocene, bis-cyclopentadienyl nickel, and the acetylacetonates of Cr(III) and Co(III) are dissolved in SiCl4 in measurable amounts. The 1,3 dicetonates of Cu(II), Ni(II), and Fe(III) react under formation of salts containing the tris(1,3-dicetonato)-silicon(IV) cation. No solvation or reaction occurs with the diacetyldioximates of Cu(II) and Ni(II) in pure SiCl4, in the presence of HCl, however, these inner-complexes are transformed to the corresponding normal complexes

Description / Table of Contents: CuCl2 reacts with anthranilic acidmethyl ester and its N-(β-hydroxy-ethyl) derivative giving crystalline complexes. IR-spectroscopic investigations of these compounds as well as of complexes of 2,5-bis-[pyridil-(2)-methyl-amino]-terephthalic acid diethyl ester (PTE) have shown the carbalkoxy groups to have herein, in general, no ligand properties. Only for (PTE)Cu2(NO3)4 a weak co-ordinative interaction between the central atom and the ester group is indicated. These results are compared with the behaviour of other esters of aminocarboxylic acids.

Description / Table of Contents: β-(Bis-phenyl-phosphino)-ethyl-pyridine-(2) (PhPED) reacts with Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn salts forming predominantly 1,1 complexes which are supposed to have a distorted tetrahedral configuration. Ni(PhPED)(NCS)2, however, is diamagnetic, and also the 1,2 complexes Ni(PhPED)2J2 and -(ClO4)2; these have probably a distorted octahedral and planar-quadratic, respectively, structure. The Cu(I) complexes Cu(PhPED)Cl and -Br have been prepared, too.

Description / Table of Contents: Bis-(β-pyridyl-2)-ethyl)-amine (DPNH) and Cu(II) react in ethanol giving 1,1 complexes Cu(DPNH)X2 (X = Cl, Br, NO3), whereas from aqueous solutions only hydroxo complexes, Cu(DPNH)(OH)X (X = Br, NO3ClO4), could be isolated. Bis-(β-[pyridyl-2]-ethylselenide (DPSe), however, forms only the 1,1 complexes Cu(DPSe)X2 (X = Cl, Br, NO3, ClO4) in both aqueous and ethanolic solution.Structural aspects of these compounds, and their reactivities are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Picolinic acid amide and its N-monoethyl derivative form 1, 2 and 1, 3 complexes with 3d element salts. In the case of picolinic acid diethylamide, also 1,1 complexes can be isolated. The amides behave as bidentate ligands through their amide oxygen atoms. Spectral properties and the structures of some of these complexes are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Whereas acctoxy-ethylpyridine-(2) (AcäP) gives with copper(II) halides normal 1.2 complexes, its interaction with Cu11 salts of oxoacids yields compounds. Cu(HÄP—H) (ÄcäP)ClO4 and Cu(HÄP—H)NO3, which contain its hydrolysis product, β-hydroxyethylpyridine-(2) (HÄP). Analogous compounds are Cu(HÄP—H)(HÄP)ClO4 and Cu(HÄP—H)NO2. These perchlorates, nitrate and nitrite, the structures of which are discussed, are all low-spin complexes (μeff 〈 1 B. M.) and correspond herein and in their electronic spectra with those compounds belonging to a complex type which was first described by HEIN and BEERSTECHER.
