Notizen: Our previous theoretical model was extended to predict the heat and mass transfer phenomena in microwave-heated porous materials. A water-filled sandstone was heated in microwaves and its drying rates and temperature profiles were measured. Predictions agree well with observations. Besides moisture loss rates and temperature profiles, the model also predicts local moisture content, gas densities, and pressure. These latter quantities were not measured in our work, but are of interest since they reveal the basic mechanisms of heat and mass transfer in internally heated porous media.

Notizen: A theoretical model was developed to predict the heat and mass transfer phenomena in porous materials. A water-filled sandstone was heated in a convective oven and its water loss rates and temperature profiles were compared with theoretical results. In addition to local temperatures, moisture content, gas densities and pressure, this model also predicts the fluid flow pattern in the heated sample.

Notizen: The approximate equations of Hassler and Brunner and of van Domselaar are often used to deduce the capillary pressure curve of a porous medium from centrifuge data. The use of these equations restricts the centrifuge method to short samples. Also, these equations require differentiation of data. We report here methods to determine the capillary pressure curve by the midpoint and least-squares solution of the fundamental equation, relating the average saturation S1 of liquid in the porous medium to the capillary pressure Pc1 at the end of the sample nearest the axis of rotation. The methods do not require differentiation of data and are not restricted to short samples. We introduce and evaluate an approximation based on an exact result derived by Rajan. This new approximation requires the same inputs as do the Hassler-Brunner and the van Domselaar approximations, but it is accurate over a wider range of sample sizes. In addition, an approximate solution which can be used to estimate capillary pressure curves for long cores is developed.

Notizen: The photolysis of copolymers of methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, covering the entire composition range, is studied with the copolymers in the form of film and in solution, under vacuum and in an atmosphere of oxygen. In film under vacuum, copolymers with high acrylate contents become insoluble, and cross-linking and chain scission may be separated by application of the Charlesby-Pinner equation to sol-gel separation data. Otherwise, the polymer remains soluble, chain scission predominates and may be measured by the changes in number average molecular weight. Differences in the characteristics of chain scission under the four sets of conditions are accounted for in terms of physical factors, such as glass transition temperatures and “cage” recombination of radicals, and chemically in terms of the alternative reactions available to the primary radicals involved.

Notizen: The gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric properties of the methyl, trifluorethyl, pentafluoropropyl and hexafluoroisopropyl esters of the pentafluoropropionyl and heptafluorobutyryl derivatives of twelve important acidic metabolites of biogenic amines have been investigated. The optimum derivatization conditions for the different classes of metabolites have been established and the byproducts formed in some of the derivatizations have been identified. Under certain derivatizing conditions, back-exchange of deuterium in the labelled internal standards was observed. No single derivative appears to be ideally suitable for the simultaneous quantitative analysis by GC/MS of all twelve metabolites, so extracts of plasma and urine were split and a combination of the methyl or trifluoroethyl esters of the pentafluoropropionyl derivatives were used.

Notizen: The electron ionization mass spectra of 2-amino-4-(5-nitro-2-furyl)thiazole metabolites obtained from microsomal incubations and chemical syntheses were studied. The identities of the metabolites were established by chemical ionization, high resolution, and metastable measurements. The compounds studied showed multiple modes of cleavage, skeletal rearrangements and hydrogen back-transfer.

Notizen: Eight normal subjects ingested 125 mg of p-tyramine-β,β-2H2 hydrochloride and the 3 h and following 21 h urine collections were analysed by mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring for the deuterated metabolites: free and conjugated p-tyramine-β,β-2H2, free p-octopamine-β-2H1, free and conjugated p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid-α-2H1 and -α,α-2H2, and free p-hydroxymandelic acid-α-2H1. These metabolites accounted for 72% of the ingested label, of which conjugated p-tyramine and free p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid constituted 90%. Approximately 50% of the total deuterated tyramine and 70% of the total deuterated p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid were excreted in the first three hours, although there was considerable variation between individuals. The presence of a small amount of p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid-α-2H1 suggests that some exchange of deuterium occurred at the intermediate p-hydrophenylacetaldehyde stage. These results, based as they are on metabolites labelled with the stable isotope deuterium, ought to be more reliable than earlier studies in which unlabelled tyramine was ingested with the resultant metabolites, indistinguishable from their endogenous metabolic counterparts, being measured by fluorimetry or gas chromatography.

Notizen: A gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric procedure has been developed for the quantification of a diltiazem analog, naltiazem, in human plasma. The assay utilizes an extraction at neutral pH with hexane:ethylene dichloride:methyl-t-butyl ether (70:20:10), selective ion monitoring, methane or ammonia positive chemical ionization mass spectrometry and stable isotope dilution. The method has been used to analyze plasma concentrations of naltiazem in clinical samples over a range of 2-200 ng ml-1, using 1 ml of plasma.
