    Notizen: When shoaling minnows encounter a stalking pike, fish leave the shoal, approach the potential predator and then usually halt briefly before returning to the group. This behaviour, termed predator inspection, has been reported from encounters with both real and model pike. A description of inspection behaviour is given using data from experiments with a model pike made to approach foraging minnows with a standardised stalk. Evidence is presented that inspecting fish assess the risks involved. Individual minnows which have carried out an inspection visit to the predator model exhibit changes in behaviour on return which are contingent upon the state of the model, demonstrating that information is gained. Other fish change their behaviour after an inspector returns to the group, suggesting that information about the threat is transferred among the shoal. Possible costs of predator inspection behaviour may balance these benefits of knowledge, but require further investigation.

    Notizen: Experiments showed that minnows, Phoxinus phoxinus, sympatric with pike, Esox lucius, responded more vigorously to alarm substance than minnows from a population with no experience of pike predation in the wild. Minnows from the pike-sympatric (Dorset) population were more likely to hide and less likely to risk feeding than their pike-allopatric (Gwynedd) counterparts. The reaction to alarm substance in the pike-sympatric population was further increased when it was presented along with the visual stimulus of a ‘stalking’ model pike. When the Dorset minnows experienced both alarm substance and the pike model together they reduced their inspection behaviour to a level below that of the Gwynedd minnows. Minnows from the Gwynedd (pike-allopatric) population displayed increased levels of shoaling in the treatments in which alarm substance was used.

    Notizen: It is a general assumption that handling time is a constant, given an unvarying size relationship between predator and prey, and an unchanging hunger level. These results indicate that handling times for a pellet of food shown by individual members of a shoal of goldfish decrease by some 20% as the number of fish in the shoal increases from two to 15. Two mechanisms for this reduction are suggested, both of which could act simultaneously. First, there is greater competition for available food resources in a larger shoal and, second, the reduced need for vigilance in a larger shoal will enable individuals to devote more effort to the handling of their food.

    Notizen: Shoals composed of equal numbers of two size-classes of European minnows were observed undisturbed, feeding and after threat from a pike in a large arena tank.The time/frequency budget and analysed sequences of behaviour of the two size-classes were very similar. Irrespective of size, for standard behaviour measures, fish in the shoal behaved similarly under the same external influences, including predator threat.In contrast, however, the distribution of the two size-classes provided evidence of size segregation within the shoal. This was brought about by individual minnows making shoaling responses preferentially to their own size-class. After exposure to the predator, shoaling responses changed and differed between small and large minnows.The outcomes of contests at foraging patches were governed primarily by fish size and information asymmetry rather than by occupation of a feeding site.The experiment shows that asymmetrical pay-offs in foraging and in response to predator threat are the probable reasons for size-segregation behaviours. This conclusion supports the views of earlier workers that mechanical sorting by swimming speed is not an important factor in size segregation in shoals.

    Notizen: The effects of development and disturbance on schooling and shoaling were observed in laboratory-raised minnows. Both behaviours were present at the onset of free swimming. Shoaling increased to become the most important behaviour by 3 weeks after emergence from gravel, while the main increase in schooling behaviour occurred at 4 weeks. These changes were accompanied by rises in elective group size and in the number of following responses, and by a decrease in nearest neighbour distance. The increases in social behaviour were observed at an earlier stage in the same minnows threatened by a standard net chase. The main increase in schooling in disturbed minnows took place between 3 and 4 weeks after emergence; after this time schooling became the dominant behaviour. Disturbed fish were also more likely to follow another minnow during an encounter.

    Notizen: Abstract Fish schooling in a submerged sea-cage swam next to neighbours of similar size. Between 57 and 74 fish were used. Extensive three-dimensional data showed the neighbour size effect for two different species, herring and mackerel, during both day and night. These experiments, covering sizes which coexist in the wild, are the first demonstration of the neighbour size choice in fish schools predicted by theories of hydrodynamic advantage.

    Notizen: Summary The behaviour of individual minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) foraging on an artificial food patch was recorded for single species shoals of 2, 4, 6, 12 and 20 fish. In both species shoal size accounted for most variation in behaviour in the experiments. The behaviour of individual goldfish differed more than that of individual minnows, a result that can be explained by the weaker shoaling tendency of goldfish. ‘Timid’ behaviour, for example lurking in the weeds or rapid darting and turning, predominated in small shoals. It was only in large shoals that fish made frequent and lengthy visits to the patch.
