    Description: Similar orbital geometry and greenhouse gas concentrations during marine isotope stage 11 (MIS 11) and the Holocene make stage 11 perhaps the best geological analogue period for the natural development of the present interglacial climate. Results of a detailed study of core MD01-2443 from the Iberian margin suggest that sea surface conditions during stage 11 were not significantly different from those observed during the elapsed portion of the Holocene. Peak interglacial conditions during stage 11 lasted nearly 18 kyr, indicating a Holocene unperturbed by human activity might last an additional 6–7 kyr. A comparison of sea surface temperatures (SST) derived from planktonic foraminifera for all interglacial intervals of the last million years reveals that warm temperatures during peak interglacials MIS 1, 5e, and 11 were higher on the Iberian margin than during substage 7e and most of 9e. The SST results are supported by heavier δ18O values, particularly during 7e, indicating colder SSTs and a larger residual ice volume. Benthic δ13C results provide evidence of a strong influence of North Atlantic Deep Water at greater depths than present during MIS 11. The progressive ocean climate deterioration into the following glaciation is associated with an increase in local upwelling intensity, interspersed by periodic cold episodes due to ice-rafting events occurring in the North Atlantic.

    Description: Using the concept of “orbital tuning”, a continuous, high-resolution deep-sea chronostratigraphy has been developed spanning the last 300,000 yr. The chronology is developed using a stacked oxygen-isotope stratigraphy and four different orbital tuning approaches, each of which is based upon a different assumption concerning the response of the orbital signal recorded in the data. Each approach yields a separate chronology. The error measured by the standard deviation about the average of these four results (which represents the “best” chronology) has an average magnitude of only 2500 yr. This small value indicates that the chronology produced is insensitive to the specific orbital tuning technique used. Excellent convergence between chronologies developed using each of five different paleoclimatological indicators (from a single core) is also obtained. The resultant chronology is also insensitive to the specific indicator used. The error associated with each tuning approach is estimated independently and propagated through to the average result. The resulting error estimate is independent of that associated with the degree of convergence and has an average magnitude of 3500 yr, in excellent agreement with the 2500-yr estimate. Transfer of the final chronology to the stacked record leads to an estimated error of ±1500 yr. Thus the final chronology has an average error of ±5000 yr.

    Description: V28-239 core from cruise 28 of R/V Vema preserves a detailed oxygen-isotope and paleomagnetic record for all of the Pleistocene Epoch. The entire 21-m long core has been analyzed at 5-cm intervals. Glacial stage 22, above the Jaramillo magnetic event, may represent the first major Northern Hemisphere continental glaciation of middle Pleistocene character. Prior to this, higher frequency glacial events extend to near the level of the Olduvai magnetic event. Glacial events of less regular frequency extend ot the bottom of the core, which represents late Pliocene time. Fluctuations in carbonate dissolution intensity occur throughout the core with a similar frequency of the oxygen-isotope fluctuations.

    Description: We have obtained a detailed carbon-isotope stratigraphy of the Paleocene sections recovered from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Holes 577 and 577A. This 13C record is useful in stratigraphically correlating the two holes and in interpreting the magnetostratigraphic data. Comparison with the published data for Site 527 (Southeast Atlantic Ocean) shows that 13C stratigraphy is also valuable for long-distance correlation.
