Notes: Summary We have studied the systemic availability of oral albendazole in 6 patients with echinococcosis either fasting or with breakfast. Albendazole sulphoxide, the pharmacologically active principle, was assayed by HPLC. Mean plasma concentrations and AUCs were 4.5 times higher when albendazole was given with breakfast than when administered in the fasting state. We conclude that therapy of echinococcosis with albendazole requires the drug to be taken with meals and that administration on an empty stomach might be more appropriate when intraluminal effects are desired, e.g. for intestinal parasites.

Notes: In a recent paper, Brüll and Lange [Expos. Math. 4, 279 (1986); Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 8, 559 (1986)] have discussed a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with rather general nonlinearities which comprises various cases occurring in the literature. Although the "potentials'' in these equations are quite complicated, the equations admit various invariance properties. The present paper has two aims. First several local and global conservation laws related to conservation of mass, impulse, and energy are exhibited. One of these laws seems to be new, though not surprising. Then it is shown that the equation defined by Brüll and Lange is just suitable to apply some transformations which reduce the problem of solitary waves to a relatively simple Hamiltonian system in the plane. This method of transforming the phase plane problem into normal form is, in some respects, similar to the transformations introduced by Hadeler [Proc. Math. Soc. Edinburgh, to be published; Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications, Montecatini Conference, 1981, edited by A.Fasano and M. Primicerio (Pitman, New York, 1983), Vol. II, pp. 664–671] for parabolic and hyperbolic reaction diffusion equations.

Notes: Abstract The baryon sector of a recently proposed model Lagrangian containing π,ρ,ω andA 1 meson fields is analysed. Static properties of the baryons such as magnetic moments and radii are calculated. Two different ways of defining the appropriate currents, Noether construction and current field identity, are discussed. While the results based on the latter one turn out to be unacceptable, those based on the Noether currents lead to a reasonable description of the nucleon properties if one readjusts the parametersf π andg ω. The ρ andA 1 mesons are found to play a minor rôle, their inclusion does not lead to the expected improvement of the π−ω model of Adkins and Nappi.

Notes: Abstract The degree of crosslinking of very small amounts of polymer gel, encountered in the characterization of the molecular structure of rubber polymers or of polymers in powder form, cannot be determined satisfactorily by measurement of elasticity or conventional swelling. Therefore a method has been developed which enables us to determine the degree of crosslinking of such polymer systems reliably. This method is based on the measurement of equilibrium swelling by sedimentation in the analytical ultracentrifuge. The degree of swelling can either be used directly as a relative measure of the average degree of crosslinking or as basis for calculating the average degree of polymerization of the molecule chains between two crosslink sites according to the theory of Flory and Rehner. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by several examples of application (differently crosslinked polybutadienes, gel portions of various polychloroprenes and polyurethane foams).

Notes: Abstract The plasma of a pulse discharge (0.05 J/cm3) in methane at low pressure (200 Pa) is studied. The dynamics of formation and decay of C2(a3IIu, v″=0) is monitored using a stroboscopic laser absorption method. It was found that substantial amounts of C2, 1015 cm−3, arise with a 1-µs delay after the current pulse.

Notes: Abstract Methane, mixed with argon, has been polymerized by means of a hollow-cathode discharge system. Two types of cathodes were studied; one was made of a solid solution of 81% tungsten and 19% platinum, while the other was of pure tungsten. Under identical operating conditions, a higher polymer yield was found in the case of the platinum cathode (90% against 70% for tungsten). The work function of the solid solution was estimated to be 6.3 eV, compared with 4.4 eV for tungsten. In terms of the data available, the thermionic current, which is the main source of energetic electrons, is about one order of magnitude lower for the solid solution cathode when compared with the tungsten cathode thermionic current. However, the polymer yield observed is higher in the former case. The concentration of the CH• species in the hollow cathode was found to differ greatly for the cathodes tested and was about 5 times higher in the case of tungsten-platinum cathodes. Since no excited platinum vapor could be detected in the gas phase, the increase in CH• concentration was attributed to a catalytic effect of the cathode inside surface. An evaluation of the plasma polymer deposition rate yields 70 nm·s−1 for the platinum-tungsten type hollow cathode and 42 nm·s−1 for the tungsten one. In both cases, the deposition rate is much higher than those obtained from the most widely used methods for plasma polymer deposition (0.10–1.0 nm·s−1) implying methane-argon mixtures, and is comparable to the results obtained with a new type of plasma polymer deposition reactor described in the literature.

Notes: It is proven that for a certain class of singular nonlinear Schrödinger equations there exist stationary ground state and oscillatory solutions. Furthermore the existence of those solitary wave type solutions is considered which do not necessarely vanish at infinity. The results are applied to problems from plasma physics; to superfluid films, and to the Heisenberg ferromagnet spin chain.
