    The effects of ivermectin on transmission of Onchocerca volvulus (1986)

    Beschreibung: Ivermectin, given to onchocerciasis patients as a single oral dose of 200 micrograms per kilogram of body weight, substantially reduced the uptake of Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae by Simulium yahense, an efficient black fly vector of the parasite in the tropical rain forests of West Africa. Three months after treatment, patients given ivermectin infected flies at a significantly lower rate than those who had received diethylcarbamazine or placebo, thereby reducing the number of developing larvae in the vector population. This diminished rate of infectiousness was also evident 6 months after treatment.     Notizen: This work reports the characterization of late time periods in the decay of metastable He(2 3S) atoms produced in 1–4 atm of helium containing up to 1400 mTorr of N2. Results have been obtained that exploit the large dynamic range and high data acquisition rates available from time resolved spectroscopic studies of preionized stripline discharges. A new value was found for the termolecular reaction of (2 3S) with N2 of 1.5×10−31 cm6 s−1 that is in good agreement with a model of collisionally induced capture. An indirect channel of reaction was also found that seems to explain the anomalously rapid and conflicting termolecular rates that were previously reported.

    Notizen: This report belongs to a series concerned with the correlation of photolysis bands observed in electronic transition spectra of simple molecules with their dissociation products. In this work a time-delayed, double resonance application of optical impedance spectroscopy was used for the study of the state selective photolysis of Cs2 excited in the yellow range of visible wavelengths. Two independently tunable dye lasers were synchronously pulsed, the first being used to dissociate the constituents of the sample along the various possible channels and the second, delayed pulse being used to identify the products by exciting them selectively into easily detected Rydberg states. The time between photolysis and detection could be varied, starting from a value too short to permit collisional mixing or radiative cascading of the products. Particular attention was paid to the photolytic production of the fine structure components of the first and second electronically excited state of atomic cesium and to the subsequent processes which tended to degrade the selectivity produced in the initial distributions of product populations among the available states. Data were fit to a quantitative model from which rate coefficients could be extracted for various mixing processes. Reported here is what appears to be a first value for the fine-structure mixing cross section (5 2D5/2→5 2D3/2) of 17 A(ring)2±60%. In addition a delayed process for the selective production of Cs(5 2D) atoms was found to result from the excitation of a state having a lifetime less than 100 ns that is tentatively identified as a molecular state correlated with Cs(5 2D), possibly 5d 3Δu.

    Notizen: This work focuses upon previously encountered problems that have impeded the understanding of the role of He2(3Σu) metastable molecules in the afterglows of electrical discharges into atmospheric pressures of helium containing admixtures of reactants. New data are reported that generally confirm the literature values for the reactivities of this species at high pressures and continue the disagreement with earlier measurements in low pressure plasmas. Results are presented for reactions with HCl and HBr for the first time. A study of systematic dependencies of rates upon molecular parameters is reported which shows that the ratio for bimolecular reactions of vibrationally excited and unexcited He2(3Σu) molecules is largely independent of the identity of the reacting partner. This provides a means for using data on the pressure dependent part of the effective rate of reaction of He(2 3S) atoms to estimate the rate coefficients for the bimolecular reactions of the more elusive He2(3Σu) molecule.

    Notizen: This work reports the measurements of rate coefficients for excitation transfer reactions of metastable He(2 3S) atoms, produced in 0.3–4 atm of helium, with various reactants presenting a wide range of characteristics. In all cases studied, three-body reaction channels were identified with most probable values of rate coefficients lying in the range from 0.2 to 6.7×10−31 cm6 s−1, for Ne and N2O, respectively. These are generally more than one order of magnitude smaller than previously reported. The interpretation of this discrepancy in terms of a more reactive intermediate He2(Σ*) complex in dynamic equilibrium with the He(2 3S) population seems to be confirmed, and is analyzed in some detail.

    Notizen: A nuclear frequency-modulation spectrometer (NFMS) for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy is described in this article. As the name implies, this device operates by modulating the cross section for gamma-ray absorption. The automation of this spectrometer required the development of an interface to an Apple computer which provides a real-time data display. This interface also enables the Apple computer to control up to two Mössbauer spectrometers at once, with a real-time data display for each. A nuclear frequency-modulation spectrometer makes it possible to observe directly the phenomenon known as "rf sidebands'' in Mössbauer spectroscopy, without interference from the "parent transitions.'' The high resolution of NFMS makes it possible to examine the "rf sidebands'' for any fine structure.

    Notizen: Eight triaxial Blumleins have been stacked in series at one end while being synchronously commuted at the other end with a single hydrogen thyratron. Significant voltage gain has been maintained in the stack for periods of the order of 20 ns. Having no other switching elements, operation has been possible at repetition rates to 100 Hz. An x-ray diode has been matched to this pulse power source, making possible the emission of an average bremsstrahlung dose of 5.8 R/s from a sequence of 20-ns pulses. In less than 4 min of operation at 100 Hz, a dose of 1 kR could have been delivered to a target sample. When operated at 50-kV charging voltage, spectral measurements show the output to be a true continuum, peaking at intensities in excess of 2×108 keV/keV/shot and containing useful intensities of photons having energies of 150 keV.
