Notes: The quasistatic thermocapillary migration of a chain of two or three spherical bubbles in an unbounded fluid possessing a uniform temperature gradient is investigated in the limit of vanishing Reynolds and Péclet numbers. The line of bubble centers is permitted to be either parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the undisturbed temperature gradient. The governing equations are solved by a truncated-series, boundary-collocation technique. Results are presented which demonstrate the impact of the presence of other bubbles on a test bubble. In the three-bubble case, a simple pairwise-additive approximation is constructed from the reflections solution, and found to perform well except when the bubbles are close to each other. Also, features of the flow topology in the fluid are explored. Separated reverse flow wakes are found in the axisymmetric problem, and other interesting structures are noted for the case in which the line of centers is perpendicular to the applied temperature gradient. The observed flow structure is shown to be the result of superposition of simpler basic flows.

Notes: The quasistatic thermocapillary motion of a compound drop in an unbounded fluid possessing a uniform temperature gradient is analyzed. For completeness, gravitational effects are included in the treatment. The general model is formulated, and the equations for the concentric case are solved using spherical polar coordinates, while the eccentric case is handled using bispherical coordinates. Results are given for the velocity of the drop as well as that of the droplet with respect to the drop, along with useful approximations. Illustrative results are presented graphically for the thermocapillary migration of a compound drop in the special case when the droplet is a gas bubble. In addition to the velocities of the drop and the bubble, representative isotherms and streamlines also are presented which display interesting qualitative features.

Notes: Results from experiments on the motion of a pair of air bubbles in a silicone oil under isothermal conditions as well as in a downward temperature gradient are reported. Three situations were investigated: motion driven by buoyancy, motion dominated by thermocapillarity, and motion when the gravitational force and the thermocapillary force on the larger bubble of the pair were comparable. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions from the method of reflections. When the gravitational force was slightly smaller than the thermocapillary force on the larger bubble in the pair, the larger bubble moved downward but the smaller bubble nearby was found to move upward. This counterintuitive behavior is actually consistent with expectation, and an explanation is given.

Notes: Abstract In knowledge-based consultation systems, the quality of the advice rendered depends on the techniques employed to represent the domain knowledge, the explanation generating capabilities, and the control strategies utilized during the consultative advice stage. The ability to understand the problem is more crucial in providing effective consultation. In this work, the emphasis is on understanding and the consequent formulation of a plausible internal representation of legal briefs. The system developed, SIFTER, reads the given input text from a legal practitioner's point of view and retrieves from it those facts that are relevant to the particular type of case on hand. In other words, it uses the domain specific knowledge to identify the type of case and to yank out the necessary information pertaining to the case. The SIFTER generates a noun-phrase processed form of the input which contains pseudo names for the proper-nouns, dates and time-intervals. The verbs in the processed input are used to check whether the case specific events have occurred or not and then the appropriate fact-containing noun-phrases are used to instantiate the relevant legal variables and, hence, to construct an internal representation of the given problem which can then be readily used by the consultative advice stage of a problem solver or analyzer. The implementation has been done in LISP culling the required domain knowledge from the Industrial Dispute Act of India.

Notes: Abstract Laser cladding of Mg-2 wt% Zr, and Mg-5wt% Zr powder mixture onto magnesium was carried out. The microstructure of the laser clad was studied. From the microstructural study, the epitaxial regrowth of the clad region on the underlying substrate was observed. Martensite plates of different size were observed in transmission electron microscope for Mg-2wt% Zr and Mg-5wt% Zr laser clad. The corrosion properties of the laser clad were evaluated in sea-water (3.5% NaCl). The position of the laser claddings in the galvanic series of metals in sea-water, the anodic polarization characteristics of the laser claddings and the protective nature and the stability of the passivating film formed have been determined. The formation of pitting on the surface of the laser clad subjected to corrosion has been reported. The corrosion properties of the laser claddings have been compared with that of the commercially used magnesium alloy AZ91 B.

Notes: Abstract A computer simulation model of fragment distribution with respect to the fibre strength in a single-filament composite test is developed using the bimodal Weibull statistics. The predictions of the theory are examined with experimental results for AU carbon fibres coated by zirconium-n-propoxide or a zircoaluminate complex. Weibull analysis reveals a bimodal distribution of fibre strengths, in which the fractions of low- and high-strength populations vary with gauge length. It is seen that the simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data if the best fit model of strength distribution is applied. Thus, the use of a bimodal distribution term in the simulation theory yields a predicted strength at the critical length which is in good agreement with the results of extrapolation of experimental data, while the unimodal distribution term leads to overestimation of the strength.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Untersucht wird die Zuverlässigkeit eines Systems mit kalter Redundanz und Reparaturmöglichkeiten.
Notes: Summary This paper considers the reliability of a redundant system with cold standby and a single repair facility. It introduces some managerial controls and environmental constraints. Normally the repair rate isμ. However, on failure of the online unit the repair rate is geared up to a higher rateβ〉μ, if the repair facility is busy. It will stay at this higher level till the end of a random period or a repair completion, whichever occurs first. Some performance measures for a two unit cold standby system are obtained for the case of exponentially as well as arbitrarily distributed lifetimes, assuming all the other distributions to be exponential. Finally costs are taken into account explicitly and some static optimizations are considered.

Notes: The interaction between the fiber and matrix in a fiber-reinforced material plays an important role in determining the mechanical behavior of the composite. An efficient technique to simultaneously improve fiber-matrix interfacial shear strength and impact behavior of the composite is to deposit a flexible interlayer onto the fiber. This results in the creation of three bulk phases, the fiber, matrix, and the interlayer and two interphasial regions. A phenomenological model that defines the variation of the fiber-interlayer interphase and that of the interlayer-matrix interphase has been developed. In the model, the elastic moduli of these regions vary continuously, so as to bridge the two bulk phases on either side of the interphase. The interaction between the bulk phases is also taken into consideration. The model has the potential for the use of dynamic mechanical analysis to obtain, relatively, adhesion/interaction parameters of different fiber-interlayer-matrix systems. These parameters can be used to determine the optimum interlayer thickness for improved toughness and good stress transfer efficiency.

Notes: Aniline was polymerized using a static electrochemical cell and a fluidized bed electrode reactor (both static and fluidized beds) to form thin films, respectively, on plate and particulate substrates. Parameters such as reaction time, applied voltage, anolyte flowrate, and monomer concentration on the rate of polymerization were studied and correlated with polymer film thickness and surface morphology, as observed on a scanning electron microscope.
