Notes: Abstract A macroscopic stationary crack in viscoplastic materials is considered under mode I creep loading conditions. Typical representations of constitutive laws with internal variables. (back stress) which can be derived from a scalar potential function are used to model the inelastic material behaviour. It is shown that, in the limit of high stresses, the constitutive equation adopt the form of Norton's law thus leading to a singular field of the HRR-type at the crack tip, if the material functions for the constitutive equations are represented by power laws. The amplitude of the crack tip field can be evaluated using a crack tip integral. It reduces to the well-known C * expression at the crack tip and includes additonal domain integrals which ensure the independence of the choice of the integration contour and the area enclosed around the crack tip in regions where primary creep and linear eleastic effects cannot be neglected. The paper concentrates on results characterising the crack tip fields which can be derived analytically. Numerical aspects focused upon the right modelling of the crack tip zone, the range of validity of the crack tip field and the calculation of the crack tip parameter and the creep zones will be discussed in a subsequent paper.

Notes: Abstract The crack tip fields in viscoplastic materials are analysed by the finite element method. The mesh refinement required for an accurate description is determined from a comparison of the FE-results with analytical near-tip solutions which are available for two special models [1]. For the determination of the crack tip parameter C(t) or the creep zones a much coarser mesh is, however, adequate. Moreover, typical properties that reflect the geometry and loading are calculated for a number of specimens. It is demonstrated that C(t) can be approximated by an interpolation formula and that it is independent of the mathematical form of the constitutive equations if the material parameters are determined from the same set of uniaxial creep curves. The way in which C(t) depends on the load is, in general, not known whereas for the Norton law scaling relations are available.

Notes: Abstract The method of determining approximative weight functions, well known for straight through surface cracks (“edge cracks”), is extended to internal straight through cracks. The procedure is outlined in detail for central cracks in endless strips of infinite and finite widths. For the finite width strip the coefficients of the weight function are given in a closed form.

Notes: The regioselectivity ratio RS = normal: abnormal opening of activated 2-methylaziridines 2 by nucleophiles is found to range from 0.10 to unmeasurable large (only normal opening = substitution at CH2 by strongly basic carbanions). RS is assumed to result from SN2 variants differing in the degree to which bond breaking is ahead of bond making including perhaps synchronous SN2. Bond breaking will be more ahead for the N-CMe bond. High nucleophilic power pushes bond making toward a synchronous process resulting in great RS. The decrease in RS with acyl activation relative to sulfonyl activation is in accord with a flattening of the nitrogen pyramid (planarization effect). The planarization effect is retained in acidic medium by O-protonation: Rs 0.10-0.14 for methanolysis as compared to RS 0.43 for N-protonated sulfonylaziridine 2h. AM1 calculations support the planarization hypothesis. - No indication for SET with trityl anion was found.
