Notes: Abstract Models of single-species and predator-prey systems in a polluted closed environment are developed and partially analyzed. Three cases are considered: a single influx of toxicant, a constant influx of toxicant, and a periodic pollution of the environment. In the case of single-species growth we are able to determine some local and global dynamics. In the case of predator-prey systems, we investigate the existence of steady states for a small constant influx of toxicant.
Notes: Summary The thermodynamic stepwise formation constants (log T K n) of nine tervalent lanthanons (La3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, Dy3+, Er3+ and Lu3+) with three fluorinated β-ketoesters (methyltrifluroacetoacetate, ethyltrifluoroacetoacetate, and ethylpentafluoropropionylacetate) have been evaluated potentiometrically in a 50% dioxane-water mixture at 25 and 35 ± 0.01 °C. The values of log T K n do not follow a linearity when plotted againstZ/r and invariably obey the sequence: La3+ 〈 Nd3+ 〈 Pr3+ 〈 Sm3+ 〈 Gd3+ 〈 Eu3+ 〈 Dy3+ ≤ Er3+ ≤ Lu3+ in all instances. The standard thermodynamic parameters (ΔG 1 0 , ΔH 1 0 , ΔS 1 0 ) associated with log T K n have also been calculated. The validity of the chosen equilibrium model was examined by an error analysis usingS min values (sum of the squared residuals), scatter plots, and slopes and intercepts of Abrahams-Kave type normal probability plots.

Notes: Abstract This is a report of simple estimations of natural thorium in low level effluents generated during the reprocessing of irradiated Th/ThO2 rods for the recovery of233U. The method involved co-precipitation of thorium with ceric iodate at pH 1.29±0.01 and subsequent photometric determination. Conditions were optimised to eliminate the interferences of other ions present in the effluent. Approximately 15 mg each of phosphate, fluoride, and sulphate, 10 mg of iron, and 300 μg zirconium did not interfere in the estimation of 2–5 μg Th/100 ml of the effluent. Average thorium recovery was around 101.9%±2.6% when nearly 10 μg of thorium were spiked.

Notes: Abstract Solven extraction separation of americium(III) from dilute aqueous nitrate media into n-dodecane by bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfoxide (BESO) has been investigated over a wide range of experimentgal conditioins. Very poor extractablity of Am(III), necessitated the use of calcium nitrate as the salting-out agent. Effects of certain variables such as acidity, extractant concentration, salting-out agent concentration, organic diluents on the metal extraction by BESO have been examined in detail. By increasing the concentration of BESO in organic phase or calcium nitrate in aqueous phase, nearly quantitative extraction of americium even from moderate acidity is accomplished. Slope analyses applied to Am(III) distribution experiments from acidic nitrate solutions indicate predominant formation of the risolvated organic phase complex, Am(NO3)3)·3BESO for which equilibrium constant is found to be, log Kx=1.99. Extraction behavior of Am(III) has also been evlauated in the presence of several water-miscible polar organic solvents to stuy their possible synergistic effects on its extraction. Extractability of americium increased 5 to 10-fold withi increasing conentration of some of these additives, with maximum enhancement being observed in the presence of acetone or acetonitrile. Recovery of BESO from loaded americium is easily obtained using dilute nitric acid as the strippant.

Notes: Abstract The liquid-liquid extraction behavior of plutonium(IV) from aqueous nitric acid media into n-dodecane by di(2-ethylhexyl)sulfoxide (DEHSO) was investigated over a wide range of conditions. Optimum-parameters such as the aqueous phase acidity, reagent and metal concentrations, etc., were established for efficient extraction-separation of tracer as well as macro levels of plutonium. It was found that the extraction increased with increasing nitric acid concentration up to 6M HNO3 and then decreased. Extraction also increased with increasing extractant concentration. After loading of the organic phase with 2 to 50 mg/ml of U(VI), extractability of Pu(IV) became considerably lower. Recovery of Pu(IV) from the organic phase was accomplished using dilute uranium(IV) nitrate as the strippant.

Notes: A series of novel polyamides was prepared by low temperature solution polycondensation of N-(p/m-aminobenzoyl aminoacetyl)-N'-(4/3-aminobenzoyl) hydrazine with different diacid chlorides in dry N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAC). The properties of the polyamides for membrane processing were studied with the help of infrared spectra, inherent viscosity, differential thermal, and thermogravimetric analysis. The inherent viscosities were measured in concentrated sulfuric acid at 25±5°C and were in the range of 0.35-0.89 dL/g. The thermogravimetric data in air indicate that the initial decomposition temperature was in the range of 175-200°C. The polymer melt temperature (Tm) and glass transition temperature (Tg) were in the range of 230-450°C and 153.3-300°C, respectively.

Notes: Thermodynamic proton ionization constants, TpKa, of several 4-acyl-substituted pyrazol-5-ones [acyl = trifluoroacetyl (HPMTFP), acetyl (HPMAP), hexanoyl (HPMHP)] were determined in various dioxane-water mixtures at 25 and 35 ± 0.1°C. The TpKa values were determined by glass-electrode potentiometry and refined by using the extensive weighted least-squares FORTRAN program TPKA. Both extrapolation and leastsquares methods were used to obtain TpKa values in pure water (0%). All three acyl derivatives are weak monoprotic acids with TpKa values between 2.5 and 3.9, following the order HPMTFP 〈 HPMAP ≤ HPMHP. The TpKa values do not vary linearly with the reciprocal of the dielectic constant of the medium; however, a plot of TpKa versus the mole fraction of dioxane, n2, is linear at a given temperature. Values of standard free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) changes associated with their protolytic equilibria were also calculated. Temperature, medium and substituent effects are briefly discussed.

Notes: Thermodynamic proton ionization constants, TpKa, of methyl trifluoroacetoacetate (HMTAA), ethyltrifluoroacetoacetate (HETAA) and ethylpentafluoropropionylacetate (HEPPA) have been determined in 10-50% dioxane-water mixtures at 25 and 35 ± 0.1°C applying an empirical pH correction for mixed aqueous-organic media. The TpKa values are calculated by subjecting the experimental data to rigorous weighted least-squares analysis. Further, a least-squares extrapolation technique is applied to evaluate TpKa in pure water (0% dioxane). All the three ligands are weak monoprotonic acids with their TpKa between 6.0 and 9.0. Plots of TpKa with the reciprocal of the dielectric constants of the medium are not linear but plots of TpKavs. mole fraction of dioxane are linear at a given temperature. Values of standard free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) changes, associated with their ionization are also computed. Temperature, medium and substituent effects are briefly discussed.
